Preface Publications, reports and reference books are, and should be, a crucial element in the work of foresters and conservationists, if we wish to show professional standing and pride, and portray ourselves as the specialists we often feel we are. The ability to sustain your arguments with facts and references is part of the power of knowledge, that the increasingly information centred world demands. The present report presents the publications - books, reports, pamphlets - etc., which were available at the Tanga Region Catchment Office library by 1994. The lion share of the material has been provided by the East Usambara Catchment Forest Project, and much of it in 1993 and 1994. The report can also be seen as a part - as an inventory of the reference material procured by the project - of the final report for the Phase I of the East Usambara Catchment Forestry Project. The major part of the work in compiling this report was done by Mwanaidi Kijazi who has been responsible for the library in the project. We are aware, despite some proof reading and checking, that there are still several mistakes in the entries. We are, however, convinced that it will serve the purpose, and that a more thorough checking is not justified, since the material will be included in a more comprehensive database in the near future. Since then the project library has steadily grown. It has also been organised and catalogued by a professional librarian, and all material has been entered in a Microsoft Access-based library database. This will eventually allow search and retrieval operations based on titles, and keyword. The ultimate aim of these efforts is to have a comprehensive reference library to serve those who manage the East Usambara forests or do research in these forests. When the Amani Nature Reserve is established and facilities are available this collection should to its main part become the library of the Amani Nature Reserve. We hope that this report enables the staff, researchers, visitors, and other interested to have an overview of the publications available, and to strengthen their possibilities to do a good job in protecting and conserving the East Usambara forests.
