THE WHISPERING WICK INTERVIEWS ROD BROWNING Gday Rod, you’re a Brunswick stalwart, Life member, Hall of fame inductee, premiership player and current committee member….how do you see the current culture at the club? We are so lucky to have so many guys around the club who are prepared to put their hand up instead of out to help make the club their 2nd home. We all have a common goal of making our club the best placed to be and more importantly uphold the tradition of playing cricket in the right spirit. Speaking of premierships, tell some of your fondest memories from the 75/76 flag…the Wicks first in 30 years in the ones The previous season we had some very ordinary team performances in the first X1 but we did have some encouraging personal performances from various players which carried forward to the following year. As the season progressed the unity of the whole club was so evident from the President/ committee, 4th X1 to the first X1 everyone had an interest in improving their own game and by doing so improved the team’s performance. We naturally had some great individual performances but it was more the emphasis on the fielding and batting partnerships that got us a championship. I can assure you it was a very special weekend - memories & friendships which will be with me for ever. Is it true that up until a couple of years ago you kept creams in the car ‘just in case’? More like a couple of weeks ago - always be prepared Some current players miss games to attend a wedding…tell me about your wedding day? If you are a real cricketer you plan your wedding after cricket season. You attend weddings after cricket hours - your girlfriend or future wife will understand because cricket is life. As for my wedding day - could not have been any better - after getting the okay from Anne to play cricket on same day as wedding I was lucky enough to be able to play in our Premiership - opened the batting & unfortunately got out for 59, rushed of the ground got changed then off to the church in Brunswick got married - returned to Brunswick Cricket ground next day where we won Premiership - did not leave for honeymoon until 2 days later - Anne & I still say it was the best time of our lives (Could have been different if we had lost) What size shoe do you wear? Serious stuff now….the 75/76 flag kicked off a golden era for the Wicks…aside from talent, what was the main reason for the sustained success? Hard Training was always at the forefront of our senior players - we prided ourselves of wanting to be the best. We trained hard and had plenty of opportunity to socialise a lot because we were very close knit bunch. We had players wanting to come to the club because we were successful. Who were the toughest players and teams you faced in that era? Preston, Caulfield, Malvern, Camberwell, Moorabbin were always keenly contested battles. They always had plenty of experienced and talented players which made them very successful teams. You would enjoy knowing that if you got runs or wickets against these sides that you had worked hard and you would usually be able to show the bruises as trophies in doing so. During that time there were players such as Ravi Ratanayake, Malcolm Marshall, Gladstone Small, Nigel Murch, Carl Hooper, Winston Benjamin, Desmond Haynes all imports who brought the standard of VSDCA to a great level. What about players you played with? Other sides could boast their imports but we ourselves had some greats - Nookie has no peer and by far was the valued wicket the opposition was after. Blair Hillhouse was a very attacking batsman and tactical coach. Robert Rowan only had one year with us but had such a great impact in every game he played - he was very accurate and quick when he needed to be. Peter Daffey was easily one of the fastest bowlers the club has seen - you could almost smell the fear from the batsman. I could go on because we had so many talented players. On Feb the 28th, a premiership reunion is to be held…..out of that crop of past players….who Would be the first at the bar and last to leave? Alan Walton Puts the most mayo on his stories? Kenny or Peter Laker Was the calmest under pressure? John Hedley Went missing when it was time for their shout John Sara Finally Rat, why do you love Brunswick so much? Apart from being part of my life since I was 15 - It has always been a connection to some great people who have been great role models / friends not only in cricket but life in general.
