A Hero’s Welcome for Fisher College
Commencement Exercises 2016
Fisher College is proud to announce
today that Alek Skarlatos, who was
awarded the United States Army Soldier’s
Medal and the Legion of Honour,
France’s highest decoration, will
serve as distinguished Commencement
Speaker at its 112th Commencement
Ceremony at the John Hancock Hall in
Boston, Massachusetts on Saturday,
May 14, 2016, at 11:00 am.
Skarlatos, an Oregon National Guardsman,
received international praise as
one of three American travelers who
stopped a terrorist attack when they
tackled and subdued a terror suspect
on a Paris bound train in August 2015.
French President Francois Hollande said
Skarlatos and his fellow heroes, “gave
us a lesson in courage, in will, and
therefore in hope.”
Fisher College will present Mr. Skarlatos
with an honorary degree during the
graduation exercises. “I am grateful to
accept this honor on behalf of my
friends and fellow passengers Spencer
Stone and Anthony Sadler and all those
men and women who work tirelessly to
prevent acts of terrorism around the
world,” said Skarlatos.
“We are truly honored to have Alek
Skarlatos address our graduates this
year,” said Dr. Thomas M. McGovern,
president of Fisher College. “Mr. Skarlatos’

Audrey Morrissey has been an integral
part of My Life My Choice since
2003, and was the first survivor in
Massachusetts to mentor commercially
sexually exploited girls. My
Life My Choice has been fighting the
exploitation of adolescents since
2002 by empowering youth to defend
themselves against pimps and sex
trafficking, and enabling them to exit
“the Life.”

Skarlatos is the co-author of an upcoming
book that chronicles how he and
others heroically thwarted the terrorist
attack titled "The 15:17 To Paris," to be
published by PublicAffairs in August
2016. He also recently competed on
ABC’s hit television program "Dancing
with the Stars," where he finished in
third place.

Fisher Announces Community Program
Aimed at Creating Coaching Excellence
Fisher College is extremely proud to announce
a new partnership created in
cooper-ation with The BASE of Roxbury,
Massachusetts. The Coaches Academy is a
program designed to not only develop and
strengthen sport-based knowledge and
ability of coaches working with area youth,
but to introduce these coaches to a higher
level of personal success through academics.
This five-course program, which will be
taught at the Fisher College Boston campus,
will offer fundamentals into sports management
and positive reinforcement. Each
course will be worth three college credits,
which can then be transferred to other
accredited colleges. The inaugural program is
being offered to a class of up to 20 coaches.
The Base was founded in the late 1970s
through a vision to establish a competitive
baseball program as a way to keep young
people out of trouble, and providing them
with opportunities to engage in forms of
healthy competition and athletic activity.
Housed in the heart of Boston’s Roxbury,
Dorchester, and Mattapan neighborhoods,
The BASE provides comprehensive athletic
and educational advancement opportunities
for talented student athletes.
The program leverages sports as a vehicle to
engage youth in a positive, rigorous, passionate,
and success-driven environment with the
goal of excellence—both on and off the field.
Introducing Fisher Falcons of the Future
Fisher College admissions representatives visited
the Melnea A. Cass Recreation Center in Roxbury
in January, offering information and on-the-spot
approvals. Celena Lopes of Brockton, MA, was
among those receiving her acceptance to Fisher
College!
Congratulations also goes out to Rose
Thevenin (L), for being accepted to
Fisher!
