Noun or verb? 

I got to thinking about that Monday 

evening. Were we caucusing, or 

attending the caucus? Turns out, both are 

correct. The word can be used as both a 

noun and a verb.

time. Growing up 

in a publishing and 

politically interested 

family, I was surprised 

to learn Jeff had never 

attended. The first and 

last time I attended a 

caucus was as a young 

reporter, not as a voter.

To date myself, the names on the ballot that 

year were George Bush, Bob Doyle and Pat 

Robertson. (George Bush didn’t need to be 

identified by middle initials at that time.) 

The Sheldon High School auditorium 

was packed last night, and with so many 

people in attendance there was great energy 

before things got started. After listening to 

three-minute speeches in support of the 

candidates, we were handed simple ballots 

and cast our vote by simply checking a box. 

It felt simple and uncomplicated, which 

was nice. By the time we got home the national 

news was covering the results, and we 

were in front of the television for the next 

couple of hours. We also got a good education 

— learning the difference between a 

caucus and primary, and listening to the 

times when the Iowa caucus winner has 

eventually become the next president. 

Our 15-year-old daughter watched much 

of it with us and asked good questions.

speak and was being congratulated by sup-

Clay County Events Center hosts Valentine’s Dinner, Show 

Lovebirds have a new option to 

celebrate Valentine’s Day this 

year. The Clay County Regional 

Events Center is hosting its first-ever 

Valentine’s Dinner & Show Fundraising 

Gala in Spencer. 

“We thought the area needed more 

variety in events especially around 

Valentine’s Day,” said Ashley Sorenson, 

with Sales and Marketing at the 

Clay County Regional Events Center. 

“This is a great way to dress up and 

have a fun evening out in a romantic, 

elegant and classy setting.” 

Tickets are $100 per person for what 

is sure to be a fantastic evening. People 

can register for tables of two, four, 

six or eight, and with capacity for 268 

people, Sorenson suspects it could 

sell out quickly. Reserve your spot by 

Monday, Feb. 8, and receive tickets for 

the invite by mail. 

Guests receive a glass of champagne 

and glass of wine on the house, plenty 

of hors d’oeuvres, a chocolate fountain 

and a delicious dinner cooked up 

special just for this event by their inhouse 

executive chef. Entree options 

are seared ribeye, Amaretto chicken, 

smoked wild mushroom risotto or 

Alaskan Halibut. A house salad and 

bread basket are included along with 

a choice of either New York cheesecake 

or Red Velvet layer cake for dessert.

“The ballroom has never looked 

like this before, it’s going to be very exciting. 

People will be blown away and 

wowed by how amazing everything 

looks.” Sorenson said. 

Aside from the professionally decorated 

romantic setting, guests will also 

be treated to an intimate concert by 

the Shaun Johnson Big Band Experience 

who Sorenson describes as a mix 

of Michael Bublé and Frank Sinatra 

with a modern, classic sound. 

“We tried to get Shaun last year but 

dates just didn’t match up,” Sorenson 

said. “This turned out great instead. 

We have an award-winning Iowa 

musician to help with an event that 

benefits Iowa veterans.” 

That’s where the “fundraising gala” 

portion of the event comes into play. 

Proceeds from the event will go to 

Rally 4 Veterans with the goal of 

purchasing a service dog for an Iowa 

veteran. 

“It will be almost four hours of an 

amazing experience,” Sorenson said. 

“Let us cater to you. You don’t have to 

travel far for something elegant and 

exciting and you can support a great 

charity at the same time.” 

An excellent dinner. An exciting 

concert. A wonderful cause. A great

Orange City Public Library 

hosts skin care class 

Winter is here and while the 

snow-filled wind beats 

against your window the 

cold beats up your skin. 

But the Orange City Public Library 

has a plan to help out. 

They are hosting a class to help you 

help your skin. 

On Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m., the 

Orange City Public Library is hosting 

the DIY Winter Skin Care class. 

“This is a one-time event, but we do 

try to offer programming for adults 

once a month and we try to vary what 

we bring in and what we do,” said 

Amanda Vazquez, the coordinator of 

programing and technical services at 

the Orange City Public Library. “We’ve 

done a genealogy presentation, Ken 

Fry came in and talked about photography 

basics and we even had a Star 

Wars party in December.” 

The idea for this class came from a 

source where Vazquez goes to look for 

ideas, just like many other people do. 

She found the ideas on Pinterest. 

“This class is Pinterest-inspired. 

I was looking for some ideas and 

I thought this might be fun and it 

would be a nice change of pace from 

other classes we’ve offered,” Vazquez 

said. 

Attendees will be able to try their 

hand at making a sugar scrub, lip 

balm, bath salts and a lotion. 

Vazquez will be leading the class 

but she says it’s more of a hands-on 

learning experience class they are offering. 

“I’m not teaching as much as we 

are giving people a chance to come in 

and use our supplies so they can try 

out some fun new recipes for making 

their own skin care products without 

having to buy all these products in 

bulk to try it themselves at home,” 

Vazquez said. “If they find they really 

do like doing it then they can take 

what they’ve learned home and do it 

themselves.” 

There will be stations set up for each 

of the of the skin care products and 

the library is providing all the materials 

you will need as well as some fun 

scents like vanilla, lavendar and orange. 

People are encouraged to bring 

in little tubs or jars that they have that 

are empty to can be re-used and recycled. 

But if they don’t have anything 

that will work, the library has some 

containers available. 

As much as Vazquez is excited to be 

hosting this class, she is excited to also 

try her hand at making these winter 

skin care products. 

“I’m looking forward to making 

and taking home the products. This is 

not normally something I would try at 

my own house,” Vazquez said. “This 

gives me and others the opportunity 

not to have to make the mess in my 

own house and it will give me the 

chance to try doing these things.” 

People must register for the class 

by Monday, Feb. 8, and make sure 

you do it quickly. They are limiting 

the class to about 20. You’re skin will

Spencer Community Theatre offers new show, “Lombardi” 

Are you ready for some football? 

As the Super Bowl is right 

around the corner, I’m betting 

the answer to that for most people is 

a big yes. 

But if you’re still hankering for 

some football then you’ll want to 

head to the Spencer Community 

Theatre. While the theatre might not 

seem like the obvious place to look 

for a football fix, it will be for two 

weekends in February. 

“Lombardi” will be on stage Feb. 

12-14 and Feb. 19-21. 

While the play does involve talk of 

football, it’s about a lot more than just 

football. 

“I think that sports fans will definitely 

have a deeper apprecition for 

the show, but it’s really a show for any 

adult audience,” said Chris Kopel, the 

show’s director. “I think it’s a show 

that really everyone will be able to 

really get a good feeling for. It’s not 

just talking about football, it’s about 

telling the story of the man behind 

the coach.” 

The play works to tell the story of 

Vince Lombardi, the legendary football 

player and coach who led the 

Green Bay Packers to five National 

Football League Championships in 

seven years. He also led the Green 

Bay Packers to win the first two Super 

Bowls ever following the 1966 and 

1967 seasons. Thus, the Super Bowl 

Trophy came to be named the Vince 

Lombardi Trophy. 

While he’s famous for being a winning 

coach he is also infamous for his 

attitude. 

“Many people see him as a mean 

person who did a lot of yelling and 

swearing,” Kopel said. 

This play works to take people beyond 

that. 

“What the play is trying to do is get 

away from the preconceived notion of 

Lombardi as the simply the guy who 

always was yelling. It shows who he 

was as a person and how the players 

really respected and loved him and 

his love for all the players, as well. 

It’s the story of the man behind the 

coach.” 

The show follows a reporter, Michael 

McCormick, for one week in 

1965 when he tries to see just what it 

is about Vince Lombardi that makes 

him a winning coach. 

Initially none of the players will 

talk with him so McCormick ends 

up turning to Vince’s wife, Marie, for 

answers. 

Through a series of flashbacks and 

interviews and conversations, McCormick 

right along with the audience 

get to learn about the man, Vince 

Lombardi, and how he is much more 

than just a football coach. 

Kopel made sure to point out one 

other aspect about this show. 

“Right when the audience comes in 

they’ll be getting a different feel than 

any other show that the Spencer Community 

Theatre has done thus far,” 

Kopel said. 

“Audiences will really start to feel 

the whole football theme of the show 

right away.” F

Close to You 

Band brings music of the Carpenters to Okoboji 

They’ve only just begun. 

In the first show of the 2016 

performing arts season Pearson 

Lakes Art Center will host Close To 

You: The Music of the Carpenters on 

Thursday, Feb. 12 in Okoboji. 

“I think it’s a show that will really 

go over well and be a lot of fun to 

kick off the new season,” performing 

arts director Amanda Schindler said. 

“We’ve got a really good lineup this 

season with a lot of old favorites and 

new shows.” 

For the first show of the year the 

audience gets to revisit the music of 

the sibling duo the Carpenters. Songs 

like “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” 

“We’ve Only Just Begun,” and “Rainy 

Days and Mondays” are just some 

their iconic and instantly recognizable 

hits. 

Those and many more will be 

brought to the stage with Close To 

You: The Music of the Carpenters. 

Lead singer Lisa Rock brings the 

voice of Karen Carpenter to center 

stage along with a six-piece band, 

which has been touring and performing 

the Carpenters’ music at more 

than 125 shows and in 28 states coastto-coast 

for almost seven years. 

Rock has written about 25 shows 

and the debut of the Carpenters’ one 

in 2010 sold out a month ahead of 

time. The director of the theatre suggested 

they make a go of it full-time 

and they’ve been at it ever since. 

“We’ve been having a great time, 

it’s been a lot of fun for us as professional 

musicians to put on this show,” 

Rock said. “The audiences has been so 

responsive. It’s awesome. We’re still 

overwhelmed by the response we get 

and it’s always a thrill.” 

The rest of the band includes Amy 

Malouf on vocals, Justin Boller on 

bass guitar, Eric Engelson on drums 

and Dave Orlicz on woodwinds along 

with Ken McMullen and Micky York 

on piano. Rock describes the bands as 

a family. 

“I have an amazing band. The 

love and respect we have for each 

other comes through in the show. The 

chemistry we have on stage and the 

great music of the Carpenters really 

make the show,” Rock said. 

Rock said she’s always loved music, 

her parents had a Carpenters album, 

which she grew up listening to, along 

with many others. 

“Karen Carpenter is one of the top 

female singers of all time, she’s always 

on those lists,” Rock said. “She 

definitely had an influence on me as 

a musician. It’s about 47 years after 

they started making music and people 

still know it and recognize it’s poignancy.” 

Close To You: The Music of the 

Carpenters does everything in their 

original key and interacts with their 

audience telling stories and andecdotes 

between songs. 

While much of their audience is 

already familiar with the music, Rock 

says a common reaction from people 

of all ages is surprise at knowing 

nearly every song they play. 

“Great music stands the test of time 

and it’s maybe more meaningful now 

than people maybe realized back 

then,” Rock said. 

“It’s an honor to keep the music 

alive and introduce it to another generation.” 

Whether it’s introducing great songs 

to a new group of listeners, such as 

the high school choirs that sometimes 

join the show, or reinforcing the love 

of the music for decades-long Carpenters 

fans, Lisa Rock and the band always 

have fun performing the music.
