February 6, 2016
Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen,
On behalf of the Polish-American Medical Society in Chicago, I would
like to welcome you to the 66th Physicians’ Ball. Our annual Ball has become
a tradition through the years, as it brings together and bonds Polish-
American physicians.
The Society would like to salute and welcome this year’s Guest of Honor
– Mr. Alex Storozynski, Chairman of the Board of the Kosciuszko Foundation; and our new Honorary
Members - extraordinarily accomplished Polish physicians from Poland and the US, joining us here tonight.
Year 2016 marks the 70th Anniversary of the Polish- American Medical Society (PAMS) in Chicago.
Throughout its history our Society has become one of the most respected organizations in the Chicago area.
We are an influential Polonia organization and a member of the Polish-American Congress. We are also an
important local affiliate of the Chicago Medical Society, whose current President, Dr. Kathy Tynus, has
Polish roots and whom we are proud to welcome as a PAMS member. With over 480 physician-members,
representing many specialties, we are the largest Polish medical émigré organization in the world.
Our goals are both to support medical professionals and students, and to serve Chicago-area Polonia.
Our Society organizes professional events, assists medical newcomers, awards scholarships and initiates
various medical efforts benefitting the Polish community. We are also helping numerous charitable causes
through fundraising efforts.
We in turn are grateful to several businesses and foundationsfor their support. Their contributions and
sponsorship are greatly appreciated. This year our thanks go especially to the Dr. Roguska-Kyts Foundation
for generous support of our educational funds.
Tonight’s beautiful event is the result of the work of many individuals to whom I would like to express
my special gratitude for volunteering their valuable time. It is the dedication of the Society’s Board, the Ball
Organizing Committee and many other friends that makes this spectacular evening happen. Sadly, we also
mourn the untimely passing of our friend and long-time member of our Society’s Board, Dr. Eva Kiljanska-
Buch; and a recent tragic deaths of PAMS Honorary Member Dr. Krzysztof Krawczynski and his wife.
The proceeds from Physicians’ Balls have supported many worthy causes. The tradition of philanthropy
continues tonight, as this year’s proceeds will go towards our educational funds, providing grants and scholarships
to medical, dental and veterinary students of Polish origin in the Chicago region - and to the
Paderewski Symphony Orchestra.
Once again, I would like to thank you all for supporting our mission and for coming here tonight. I wish
you a wonderful and memorable evening!
Kornelia Krol, M.D.
A
Alex Storożyński
lex Storozynski is an award-winning journalist and author.
He is currently Chairman of the Board of the Kosciuszko
Foundation (KF), the American center of Polish culture.
During 2008-2014 Storozynski was President and Executive
Director of the KF.
Founded in 1925 by Professor Stephen Mizwa as “a Living Memorial”
to Tadeusz Kosciuszko, the Foundation promotes closer ties between
Poland and the United States through educational, scientific
and cultural exchanges. The KF awards up to $1,000,000 annually in
fellowships and grants to scholars, professionals and artists and promotes
Polish culture in America. It has awarded scholarships to Poles
who have changed history. Among many funds donated by individuals
and organizations, the Kosciuszko Foundation administers PAMS Scholarship Fund, which has allowed
more than 20 physicians from Poland to be trained or pursue their research at Chicago
universities.
Storozynski received his Bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz and
a Master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University. From 1985-87, Storozynski was a graduate
fellow at the University of Warsaw, but was blocked from completing his doctorate after being interrogated
by the Communist regime’s secret police for his ties with the Solidarity opposition and trying to
smuggle illegal publications out of Poland. Storozynski was then added to the
“Index of Undesirable Persons in the Polish People’s Republic”.
Since then, as history would have it, Storozynski has received the “Lech Walesa Media Award”, has
been decorated with Poland’s “Gold Cross of Merit” by President Lech Kaczynski, and the “Officer’s
Cross of Merit” by President Bronislaw Komorowski.
Storozynski’s book The Peasant Prince: Thaddeus Kosciuszko and the Era of Revolution, won the
Fraunces Tavern Book Award, The Templar Military History Award – “Military Order of Saint Louis,”
and other honors. His documentary film about Kosciuszko was released in 2015 and broadcast on
PBS; Chicago’s WTTW Channel 11 was the first in the US to present it on October 1st last year.
As a New York Daily News editorial board member Storozynski wrote editorials and op-ed columns
on public policy issues and was part of the writing team that won the Pulitzer Prize, George Polk
Award, Sigma Delta Chi Award, Deadline Club Award, Associated Press and Silurian Awards. He is a
former City Editor of The New York Sun, founding editor of amNewYork, and has been published in
The Wall Street Journal, The Chicago Tribune, The New York Post, Newsday, Forbes.com, The
Huffington Post and other publications.
As President of the Kosciuszko Foundation, Storozynski modernized its structures and increased its
visibility. He organized an international conference about the Katyn massacre at the Library of Congress
in Washington with participation of Zbigniew Brzezinski and members of the US Congress, and
the Katyn exhibit in the rotunda of the Senate building. Storozynski also wrote a petition signed by
over 300,000 people, including President Bronislaw Komorowski, professor Norman Davies, Chief
Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich, members of the US Congress, Auschwitz survivors and other
renowned people, that persuaded The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Associated Press
and other media to change their Style Books to ban the historically erroneous phrase “Polish concentration
camps” when describing Nazi German WWII atrocities. Thanks to Alex Storozynski the
Kosciuszko Foundation is now also legally registered in Poland as Fundacja Kosciuszkowska Polska,
which allows Polish citizens to receive tax deductions for donating money to the KF for scholarships
and the promotion of Polish culture.
A former Chairman of the Board of The Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union, Storozynski is also
a board member of several other organizations, including the American Polish Advisory Council
(APAC), Quinnipiac University’s Central European Institute and Friends of the American Revolution
at West Point.
Special Recognition
Piotr Witkowski
iotr Witkowski MD,PhD, is a transplant surgeon and
Associate Professor of Surgery at University of
P
Chicago Medical Center in Chicago. He specializes in
abdominal organ transplantation - kidney, pancreas and liver.
For the last 6 years, he has also been Director of Pancreatic
Islet Transplantation program there, leading a cutting-edge
research team and supervising clinical trials. The focus of
his clinical research is a novel, mini-invasive treatment of
complicated forms of type I diabetes mellitus. Another example of his innovative treatment
is islet autotransplantation in patients required total pancreatectomy for begin disease,
in order to improve their blood glucose control and prevent diabetes.
These clinical advances stem from Dr. Witkowski’s very productive scientific work in
his laboratory, where he leads a team of researchers, fellows and students. He has authored
over 80 peer-reviewed publications, mentored numerous students, physicians
and scientists and has been a principal investigator on many projects.
Dr, Witkowski’s work has been recognized with several grants and awards. Deservedly,
he received the Outstanding Mentor Award from The Transplantation Society in 2012.
His research was also recognized and supported by the Kosciuszko Foundation and the
Polish-American Medical Society (PAMS) in Chicago. One of his star researchers, Dr.
Natalia Marek, was recently able to pursue her project in Dr. Witkowski’s laboratory as
the Foundation’s grantee. She has received international awards for this research, including
PAMS’ Science Award two years ago. Dr. Witkowski continues to play an active
role in helping and mentoring Polish medical students and physicians, as he is
often able to offer them observership, elective or fellowship at University of Chicago.
These activities are frequently in collaboration with the Polish American Medical Society
and are very appreciated.
Prior to moving to Chicago, Dr. Witkowski gained extensive research experience at Columbia
University in New York City, where he also completed his surgical fellowship
in transplantation at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.
Dr. Witkowski is a graduate of Medical University in Gdansk. He finished his training
in general surgery and defended his PhD thesis there before emigrating to the US. He
credits his later accomplishments to the outstanding medical education he obtained in
his native Gdansk.
Ewa Kiljańska-Buch
In the summer of 2015 everyone in the Polish-American Medical Society,
with immense sadness and love, said good-bye to a special person – a great
friend, colleague and a long-time Member of the Board of the Polish-American
Medical Society in Chicago, Dr. Ewa Kiljańska-Buch.
Dr. Buch was a graduate of Warsaw Medical Academy and of the Anesthesiology
Residency at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago.
Specializing in pediatric anesthesiology, she was a greatly respected Attending
Physician at the Condell Hospital in Libertyville, Illinois, for over forty
years until her recent retirement. She was known in the Polish émigré community
in the Chicago area as a generous, fun-loving friend, excellent
physician and avid traveler. She and her husband Roman Buch were wonderful
hosts to many picnics and gatherings at their Libertyville estate, as
well as favorite guests as participants in other events – warm-hearted and
full of joie de vivre. At the Polish-American Medical Society, for over thirty
years, Ewa’s enthusiasm with organizing numerous events was a shining
example of dedication to our common goal.
Ewa’s passing creates an enormous void in the work of the Polish-American
Medical Society and leaves all her friends with a heavy sense of grief.
The memory of Ewa Buch will always live in our hearts.
Paderewski Symphony Orchestra
of Chicago, Orchestra Hall
at Symphony Center
THE PADEREWSKI SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The Polish-American Symphony Orchestra (PASO), under the leadership of Barbara
Bilszta, debuted at the Harold Washington Public Library in Chicago in 1997
with a concert featuring Polish (Moniuszko) and American (Copland) music and was
received with enthusiasm by a multi-ethnic audience.
In 1999 the Orchestra was re-named for Jan Ignacy Paderewski - a virtuoso pianist,
composer, statesman and the first Prime Minister of a reborn Poland. Thanks to
the support of Polish and American communities the organization has grown from a
small chamber ensemble to a large cultural organization with permanent staff, a strong
team of volunteers, its own Choir and an Academy of Music for children and youth.
Its mission is to organize concerts of Polish music, to promote Polish music and
culture in the US and to provide music education. Under the baton of Wojciech Niewrzol
PASO has performed 210 concerts of Polish music by Moniuszko, Paderewski,
Chopin, Szymanowski, Gorecki, Penderecki, Kilar; as well as American and World
music for over 240 000 listeners in Chicagoland’s concert halls, including the Copernicus
Center, Harris Theatre, Rosemont Theatre and Orchestra Hall at the Symphony
Center. Thanks to a partnership with the Copernicus Foundation, PASO has presented a
number of complex, multimedia projects, e.g. Pan Tadeusz, Carnival in Venice,
Dancing Chopin, Theatre of Song, Music of Polish Kings.
Its staging of the American premiere of Moniuszko’s Straszny Dwor at the Rosemont
Theatre met with such applause that PASO is planning to present it at Chicago’s
Lyric Opera stage on April 9-10, 2016 with the participation of opera singers from
Poland.
True to the Orchestra’s educational mission, its director, Barbara Bilszta, herself
an accomplished musician, has also organized radio programs, press releases, meetings,
presentations and master classes. 120 children are enrolled in PASO’s Academy
of Music. Concerts for students of 35 Polish Saturday Schools have attracted over 27
000 listeners.
For their efforts ad accomplishments Barbara Bilszta and Wojcich Niewrzol have
received numerous Polish and American cultural and leadership honors - Medal for
Promoting Polish Music , the State of Illinois Outstanding Public Servant Award, the
Cook County Certificate of Excellence, Silver Gloria Artis Medal , Citibank’s
Charisma Award for Outstanding Leadership and “ Best of the Best” title by the audience.
