They’re probably two of the last buildings of post and beam construction built in Millis (then known as East Medway), and they’re set to be demolished, unless someone wants to claim them. At the site of the old Braman Screw Machine Company (which ceased operation in 2009) on the last stretch of Route 109 in Millis before hitting Medway, Tractor Supply Company has purchased the site. R & R Auto Repair The buildings were originally built and owned by John Bullen, who was the incorporator of the Hartford & Dedham Turnpike in the area, and was likely the site of the toll-gate. Later, it was owned by Phil Braman, who operated the Braman Screw Machine Company in Millis. Tractor Supply Company cannot use the buildings on the site, which it intends to raze. The Millis Historical Commission has intervened, however, forestalling the demolition. When someone applies to the building department for demolition, we have only 60 days or the structure can get razed,” says Nathan Maltinsky, Chair of the Millis Historical Commission. “What we’re doing is we’re trying to find an interested party to a.) move the house and barn or b.) dismantle it and repurpose the structure,” says Maltinsky, who adds, “This is a growing problem with a lot of properties. A lot of people don’t want to put money into older structures.” Maltinsky presented this idea to the Millis Planning Board on behalf of the Historical Commission. “Tractor Supply agreed to all that. It has been very accommodating in trying to do something with the property instead of just tearing it down,” says Maltinsky. Tractor Supply, says Maltinsky, will be closing on the purchase this spring. “If anybody was interested, we’d have to act fast on it. One person might want the house; one person might want the barn. If we had more than one party interested, then the Historical Commission would have to make a decision.” Maltinsky points out that the Millis Historical Commission has a duty to preserve and oversee historical assets of the town, and he hopes someone from Millis or other nearby towns might be interested in the structures.
