JNU Row: Expression and Nationalism

Kanhaiya kumar, the president of the Jawaharlal
Nehru University (JNU) Student’s
union was arrested by the Delhi police
on complaint of sedition, on February 13,
in the protest at JNU campus against the
hanging of the 2001 Parliament attack convict
Afzal Guru. Kanhaiya kumar has been
charged with sedition as per the Indian Penal
code’s section 124-A.
And this is how it all started at JNU campus:
On February 9, some students from the
Jawaharlal Nehru University organized
an event in the campus protesting against
the hanging of 2001, Parliament attack accused,
Afzal Guru .
Mohammad Afzal Guru was hanged on
February 3, in 2013, on charges of ‘voluntarily
harboring and concealing the deceased
terrorist’.
According to some of the witnesses, posters
inviting students to join a debate on ‘Judicial

gathered at the protest site and started
threatening the students.
As per the reports, none of the students,
who were the part of the organising committee,
were part of the ant-national students

and ordered to 3 days of police custody.

Being from Hansraj

“Did you know that Hans Raj used to be a boys
college?” “Oh really? Wow. All I had heard
about Hans Raj was that Shah Rukh used to go
here”
Just like many other prestigious Delhi University
College, Hans Raj has a robust history to
boast of. Apart from its famous alumni, one
gets to learn much about Hans Raj College
through the three years of attendance and association.
The first main thing I noticed was how
Hans Raj could easily be placed in the middle
of the ‘strictness spectrum’, neither extremely
liberal nor dictatorial. For example the lack of
attendance doesn’t result in debarring (or at
least it hasn’t for me) but at the same time, one
can’t smoke on the premises unlike a handful of
other North Campus colleges; not that I mind..
(or do I?).
Another thing about Hans Raj which makes it
unique is its affiliation with the Arya Samaj, as
the founder - Mahatma Hans Raj, the Indian educationist,
was a devout follower of the same.
How does this affect students? In my experience
so far, the only difference in my life was the
scarcity of non vegetarian food while I was in
college, seeing as our canteen would not serve
any. However, that could easily be rectified by a
little trip down the road to DSE for their mutton
cutlets. Contrarily, a plus point about the Hans
Raj canteen would be Dhan Singh - the friendly
canteen “waiter”, who would take our orders
regardless of where we were sitting - as long as
we were somewhat near the canteen premises.
In return, he would ask for nothing more than
the basic bill payment and an indulgence into
his penchant for gossip.
On a personal note, as an English Honours
student, I have been blessed with an amazing
faculty at Hans Raj College. While studying literature,
one is exposed to various systems and
variants of thought; a reality which can become
cumbersome unless spearheaded by adequate
teachers. Luckily for me, my teachers were
more than adequate, when it comes to aspects
such as delivering clarity of thought, alternate
perspectives and most importantly, providing
you with eye opening knowledge which makes
you more aware of the world you live in. For
those of you who are reading this and are yet
to enrol into colleges (specifically for English
Honours because that’s all I can personally
vouch for) you could do much worse than Hans
Raj.
The college has a healthy plethora of societies
which offer exposure into creative paradigms
such as acting, debating, music, photography,
filmography etc. Apart from existing societies,
the college offers you enough artistic integrity
to start your own society, if you are driven
enough towards the medium of your choice.
For instance, I found enough support from my
faculty and the college administration to start a
creative writing society. Although the journey
(which has now spanned over two years) has
been difficult at times, at this point Ostraca (the
name of the creative writing society) is strong
and established, with a membership of over 30
competent writers.
I have also had the pleasure of meeting a diverse
set of people throughout my journey as a
student of Hans Raj College. You meet people
that hail from different geographical frontiers,
harbour different opinions and viewpoints but
most important of all, are there to share the
anxiety (albeit initial) of being a new addition
to the myriad of around 5000 other students.
Eventually, these people end up becoming your
new family, and you’re left with experiences to
cherish for the rest of your life.
Every college is special, not simply because of
its own heritage, but mainly because of which
experiences you chose to indulge in and which
amenities you chose to avail. Hans Raj hasn’t
let me down in either, so far.

to Veronica Carrasco, the long- dead

convince Tara to pretend to be Veronica to solace
her dying sister Michelle, who believes Veronica
is still alive. Once dressed in Veronica’s
clothes, Tara finds herself locked in Veronica’s
role and room; or is she Veronica, pretending to
be an imaginary Tara?

DU Fests: Finances and Funding

Most of us are over the moon with the news
of University fests hitting this season. And
here comes the same time of the year yet again.
Rhapsody, the annual fest of Maitreyi college
kick started the season of festivities in Delhi
University. A two day event filled with colors of
entertainment and the enthralling performance
by Guru Randhawa with people grooving to the
tunes of ‘PATOLA’.
The fests, big or small are one place you ought
to be when you look forward to spend a great
time enjoying, munching lip-smacking food
and moving your legs to the beats of hot Bollywood
numbers.
As the fest season has commenced, one must
keep a track of dates as it is needless to say
that its going to be awe-striking this year. The
news is around that Arman Mallik and Astitva
band will mark their presence in VIBRATION,
annual fest of Shivaji. The Pandora’s Box has
been unveiled and more surprises will come
your way as the month passes by. TARANG’16,
Lady Shri Ram’s annual cultural fest got everyone
buzzing as news has it, it was more spectacular
than ever. Here’s a list of a few fests which

The thing which draws every student’s attention
is how DU Colleges get funds to host such
extravagant Fests; though not a very intriguing
question but definitely worth thinking about.
The fests have been star studded and hugely
high-priced. For most of the students, the fests
mean nothing but a gala time with their pals,
celeb performances, variety of events coming
their way and a bunch of selfies clouding their
Facebook walls. But the actual eager-beaver
behind such processions are the folks holding
up prestigious posts in the different Student
Unions. They work months in advance raising
funds to make the fest a success.
There’s not a moment when they run out of
steam to fetch appreciation for their college. A
few years back student were persuasive and all
struggling to get sponsorship for the events, unlike
now, despite the economic downturn many
MNC’s and other reputed brands are more than
eager to lend a helping hands to the Student
Unions. Numerous international brands are a
part of it such as WIPRO, BAJAJ, Vodafone,
Bisleri and the list goes on. Most of the colleges
garner funds from corporate so as to gain visibility
among youth.
Most Student Unions bank on such sources for
making their college fests grand every coming
year. They always rely their hopes in the biggies
for pumping in huge funds so as to make
their annual fests more sumptuous and lavish
each year. While they still need to align by the
guidelines set by the college management when
selecting sponsors; they are asked to keep away
from brands such as Coca-cola, Pepsi and tobacco
brands.
The budget for these fests often varies from 5-6
digits, as huge an investment the sponsors agree
to make the college hosts events abiding by
them. Though it is likely that the Student Union
of SRCC, has an extraordinary talent of convincing
their sponsors, owing to the grandeur
witnessed in Crossroads, its annual cultural
fest. Whilst the other colleges lack no less enthusiasm
for arranging shows for the audience.
In the past years SRCC has lead the expedition
of putting up a fabulous show for the students
in the light of which it amassed a scholarship
of about few crores. Hansraj hit the second position
on the list and the other colleges such as
Kirori Mal bagged a sponsorship of around 35
lakhs thus raising the level of competition. Behind
the scene the DU fests are a result of the
hard work put in together by the member of the
student unions who are more than eager to walk
that extra mile to make their college annual fest
the best in town and thus setting high standards
for their peers. The task of urging the sponsors’
fund them is as challenging as disturbing a hornets’
nest but they bear with it all and thus reaping
the outcome of their diligence.
So here comes along another year of the zealous
and laborious work rolled into one. Fest
season knocks your door so collect your friends
and get-set go to unleash a new level of fun and
entertainment. DU fests have a lot in store for
you and it seems most of us will be hitting the
places with bells on.

The Syrian Refugee
crises

Over the years, Syria has become synonymous
with war, terror and agony, in contrast to what it
was a few years ago-a country of fertile plains,
high mountains deserts and valleys.
Syria is a country in western Asia. And it
shares it borders with Lebanon and Mediterranean
Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq
to the east, and Jordan to the south and Israel
somewhere to the southwest. It is passably diverse
ethnically and religiously and is a home
to various groups although; Syrian Arabs make
up the largest majority. The religious groups
include-Sunnis, Christians, Yazidis, Alawites,
Druze, Shiites, and Salafis. Damascus is one of
the oldest cities in the world, apart from being
the capital of Syria.
Syria has been enmeshed in an uprising against
Bashar-al-Assad and the Ba’athist Govt as part
of the Arab Spring. What is Arab Spring you
ask? ‘’Arab Spring was a revolutionary phase of
demonstrative protests both violent and non-violent,
civil wars and riots in the Arab world. It
all started somewhere around 18th Dec 2010
in Tunisia and its revolution. It later spread
to countries of the Arab League. The protests
somewhat faded in mid-2012.’’ In March,
2011 a southern city of Deraa saw pro-democratic
protests after the arrests and torture of
some teens who painted revolutionary slogans
on a school wall. The protests turned violent
after security forces open fired. This caused a
nationwide rage and people demanded for the
resignation of President Bashar-al-Assad. The
situation became even more violent and people
took arms in the latter part of 2011. The
uprising and the escalated violence contributed
to the Syrian Civil War. Rebel groups were
formed to battle against the government forces,
for control over cities and towns. This eventually
spread throughout the nation. The division
between, the secular, the Islamist fighters, religious
and ethnic groups have complicated the
matters further.
According to UN activists and the UN, nearly
90k people have been killed in the conflict.
And by August 2015 the numbers have climbed
to 250,000. The bombings and airstrikes have
killed many ,and destroyed the cities. Most of
the population is internally displaced.
The vacuum that had been created due to conflicts
has given rise to jihadist groups, like
ISIS and it has added another dimension to the
scenario. The rises of the Islamic State and its
callous acts have caused a global uproar. Beheading
foreigners, throwing people off forts
because of sexual preferences, training kids
to behead and torture, destroying historical
sites and museums, these acts are nothing but
barbaric and benighted. Mid-2015 saw some
countries launching airstrikes at ISIS locations
in and around Syria. And that resulted in more
and more civilians getting trapped and killed.
The delivery of humanitarian aid became more
parlous in these regions.
The war zones often see misuse of power and
vulnerability of the people. Horrendous war
crimes have taken place, from young girls and
boys being abducted and pushed into prostitution
and slavery, to murder, rape, torture and
disappearances. Stories of young girls used as
sex slaves and little kids being trained to become
suicide bombers have been all over the
internet and the news channels. Such incidents
scar the lives of the people and leave them shattered.
Getting back to the normal way of life
seems next to impossible for them.
And at present it is the least peaceful countries
of the world.
The Syrian civil war has been a very traumatic
episode for many. The apocalyptic war has left
many homeless, jobless, orphan and without
basic necessities. It is truly heart wrenching.
It all started with peaceful anti-government
protests but it slowly developed into a violent
armed conflict which has lasted for almost 5
years now. Out off which nearly 4 million people
have found refugee in countries like Turkey,
Lebanon, Jordan Iran and Egypt. And some
have taken the dangerous route to Europe. But
after the Paris attacks, many European countries
have closed their borders. The civil war
has robbed people of their basic human rights.
The living conditions are unimaginable. Extra
effort needs to be put for the displaced. And for
that-the UN and a few other NGOs have set up
camps to help out refugees. They provide them
with basic necessities and counseling.
The UN says “it will need $3.2Bn to help the
13.5million people, including 6 million children
who will require some form of humanitarian
assistance inside Syria. About 70% do
not have access to clean drinking water, and 1
in 3 people are unable to meet their basic food
needs and more than 2million kids are out of

4) Hand in Hand for Syria brings emergency
aid to people living under worst conditions and
trying to survive.
5) Karam Foundation in Chicago founded in
2007. KKaram started the school along the
border called Zeitouna also supplying food and
other necessary items they even support other
organizations like White Helmets.
6) Watanili works through grass roots initiatives
including art therapy and creative work
shops countering the effects of trauma.
7) Mercy Corps is an international development
organization that helps people around the
world survive and thrive after conflict, crisis
and natural disaster.
8) Khalsa Aid- Khalsa Aid is primarily a humanitarian
relief agency, based on the teachings
of the Sikh Guru who preached well being
of all humanity. They have provided the refugees
with fresh food, school books, school furniture,
clothes, water and blankets. “Recognize
all human race as one” –Guru Gobind SinghJi,
is their motto.

For the first time ever, a State and UN Climate
Conference was ISO 20121 certified. The certification,
which is attested by Bureau VERITAS,
was a first for an event of this magnitude. The
ISO standard therefore meets the objectives
that France has set itself and guide the sustainable
development policy of COP21.
When we talk about climate change we find that
there is a big gap between what scientists say
and what people think, especially Americans.
This comes from a public opinion poll released
on 29th Jan, 2016 by Pew Research Center and
the American Association for the Advancement
of Science (AAAS). The poll captured a significant
split between what scientists and the general
public believe on climate change. In 2014,
the vast majority (87 %) of scientists said that
human activity is driving global warming, and
yet only half the American public ascribed to
that view. And 77% of scientists said climate
change is a very serious problem. In comparison,
only 33% of the general public said it was
a very serious problem in a 2013 poll.
When the pollsters questioned people differently,
asking whether there is solid evidence the
Earth is getting warmer, 72% of people said it
was, up from 57% in 2009. Only 25% said the
Earth is not getting warmer, up from 11% in
2009.Only 3 percent of people were still undecided,
which means most people have made
up their minds already on the climate. Of the
people who agreed the Earth is warming, about
half (46%) said it is caused by human activity.
The increased belief in climate change was reflected
last week in the Senate, when 98 senators
from both parties voted that climate change
is real and not a hoax. Only one, Sen. Roger
Wicker (R-Miss.), voted otherwise. Going on
the record on their beliefs was a historic step
for Republicans who have otherwise insisted
that “they are not scientists” when questioned
on climate change.
But about half the senators still maintained that
climate change is not driven by human activity.

The King Returns to DU after 28 years
for his Degree
After over 28 years, actor Shah Rukh Khan has been presented
with the graduation degree by the principal of Hansraj College,
Delhi University. The 50 year old actor was in the Delhi University
campus to promote his upcoming film, Fan. SRK had studied Economics
at the college from the year 1985 to 1988.
The actor-producer finally took time out of his busy life to collect
his graduation degree on Tuesday, 28 years after passing out from
Hansraj College in New Delhi.
“This is a very special moment for me. I am back in my college,
which I left in 1988. I am missing only one thing –my children are
not with me today, as I wanted to show them every corner of my
college,” Shah Rukh said at the event.
While presenting him with the degree, Hansraj College Principal
Rama Sharma said the institution is proud of its superstar student.
“We are very happy to present him the degree after so many years.
We had kept his degree safely in our college. We are proud to bestow
him with it today,” Sharma said.
The actor also signed the register after taking the DU graduate degree.
Shah Rukh, who was born in Delhi, lived in famous localities of
the city including Rajendra Nagar and Gautam Nagar, studied at St
Columba’s School and earned his bachelor’s degree in Economics
from Hansraj College.

nightmares in which Damdami Mai
appears from time to time. She has
threatened the principal to get
everything back to normal as
Damdami Mai doesn’t want a
falling number of her followers. If
her demands are not met, she has
threatened that all the students
would not be able to write exams as
they will be using their right HAND
for self pleasure a little more than
too much.” The principal has
decided to have a meeting with
Damdami Maiin the dream next
week and has decided to negotiate
with the said demands. Though the
PA of the principal did show some
positive response regarding this
matter and said that there had
been turmoil in the senior staff and
seeing the popularity of Damdami
Mai among students, it has been
decided that this issue will be
further taken into United Nations
to have an international solution to
national virginity. Damdami Maihas
recently opened a Facebook
account to maintain her followers
(just in case) where she has also
asked her followers to put up a
statue of virgin Sunny Leone in case
the Virgin Tree is not restored and
she has also apologised for not
connecting with her followers due
to poor networks in Devlok(Where
all these gods and goddesses live).
Damdami Mai has also begun a
YouTube channel to give online
tuition for self-pleasure and tips
and tricks for newbies. All this has
interrupted the semester exams
preparation of students so let me

WWF Earth Hour
2016- LIGHTS OFF

“We are the first generation to feel the impact of
the climate change, and the last generation that
can do something about it” – Barack Obama
Until two decades back, the world looked at
economic status alone as a measure of human
development. This idea led to rapid exploitation
of resources across the world. This lopsided
growth led to catastrophic results increase in the
carbon dioxide levels, rise in sea level and global
warming.
To combat this situation, WWF (World Wide
Fund for nature) came up with the idea of
Earth Hour-switching off lights in your home/
office for one hour to take a stand against the
climate change. It was famously started as a
‘lights off’ event in Sydney, Australia in 2007
and since then it has grown to engage more than
172 countries and territories worldwide. It was
started in India in 2009 and has seen widespread
support from all the states. This year Earth Hour
celebrates its 10th anniversary worldwide. The
logo 60+ means going beyond those sixty minutes
and working towards protecting our environment
throughout the year. This year Earth
Hour focuses on going beyond the hour; this
year Earth Hour in India focuses on promoting
rooftop solar panels and open discussions about
climate change.

Armaan Malik

A rising music star, Armaan malik who is touted
as the next big thing in the music industry has
sung for over 100-200 commercials and about
16 films such as W, Jai Ho, Bhootnath, Rakta
Charitra, Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii, Chillar
Party, “Hero” to name a few. In conversation
with the Main hun Hero tera Hitmaker:
Hi,Armaan, this is Harshita Arora from DU
Times.
Q1. From being a Sa Re Ga Ma Lil Champs
winner to being a GIMA award winner, you
have come a long way. What do you have to
say about this journey?
I remember I was exactly ten when I participated
in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs and now I
am twenty. This is not where I see myself. I take
this success as a boosting incentive. I think I am
just one step ahead and have miles to go.

Q2. You come from a family that belongs to
musical background, so music to you happened
because of nature or nurture?
I was six when I started learning Indian Classical
Music. I realise this is sometbing I really
love I see myself being this and nothing else. I
sung Mere Buddy for Bhoothnath, for Tare Zameen
Par and then Jai Ho happened, Hero, and
Main Rahun yaa Na Rahun.
Q3. “ Aaj ke time pr jab itna success milta
hai,” one tends to get cocky. How do you
manage yo keep yourself grounded?
The credit goes to my mom. Me and my brothrr
havr been instilled with the values that everything
comes with hardwork and can go away in
a sprint of second. One day you might be successful
the other day you may not. We accepted
that very early and started working on it from
then. So, that has had a very major impact on
me. Armaan Malik om stage is a very different
person and Armaan Malik back home is a very
different person.
Q4. “Yeh toh hum sab jaantr hain ki aap
apni films mein romantic songs gaate hain,
is there someone jiske liye aap real life mein
yeh gaane gaana chahenge?”
(Smiles) abbhi toh nahi but jab hongi toh zarur
but there are so many fans, Armanians jinke
liye I’d like to dedicate those songs.

In our time, internet has come up in a big way.
If you feel, you have a flair for music. Just go
on and present your talent to the world. You
never know, what might happen. That’s how
sensations like Justin Beiber happen. It is that
simple but also needs hardwork. Youtube has
also come up in a huge way.
Q8. What are your future plans?
I see myself becoming the top singer of bollywood
as of now. I want to be a Global star, sing
for international albums.

RADIO(DUCR). Inaugurated in
2007 by MR. Kapil Sibbal, its legacy
has been carried out entirely
by university students. Covering
about 10- 12 kms, this 90.4MHZ,
apart from revealing news, is circumspectly
becoming the means of
unfurling the social; political; economic
and legal awareness among
students. To clinch this moto, it
has associated with DSLSA (Delhi
State Legal Services Authority).
DSLSA is an inclusive platform
promoting Alternate Dispute Resolution
system so as to liquidate the
ascending arrears of cases in the
courts. It acts as a catalyst between
the victim of injustice and his recourse
to justice. DSLSA, erstwhile
Delhi Legal Aid & Advice Board
has been constituted by an Act of
Parliament passed under “The Legal
Services Authorities Act, 1987”
as amended by Legal Services Authorities
(Amendment) Act, 2002.
Inaugural of event took place on
10 February with the welcome address
by Mrs. Anju Gupta, director
of NCWEB, at around 2: 30 p.m.
The need for legal literacy of the
students was highlighted. She gave
warm welcome to all the distinguished
guests, judges and advocates
from the authority. It preceded
with the lightning of the lamp by all
the esteem guests and dignitaries.
Bouquets were presented to patrons
followed by which Mohit Kumar
Gupta, project leader of DSLSA,
enlightened the audience about
DSLSA; it’s mission; it’s alliance
with DUCR and the rest Shri Dharmender
Rana ji, Project Officer
with DSLSA, and Mr. R.K Singh,
technical consultant of DUCR and
project head, shared their respective
views on how DUCR can be
influencing in imparting legal literacy
and the need for radio in
today’s arena, accomplishments
of DUCR, extending wings to
constituent colleges. Finally, unveiling
of logo took place, a much
awaited session indeed! After a few
more of grandee having shared a
word, a floor was thrown open to
the audience for questions. Questions
like hikes in accommodation,
recent amendment in Child Labor
Act etc. were adroitly addressed
by our esteemed panel of judges.
Following a vote of thanks by Dr.
Salim Mir Ji, spectators proceeded
for refreshments. Correspondents
from DUCR, Gayathri Mani; Ritu
Gupta and Shikha Johari, went on
for recording with judges, clearing
doubts by making a few of legal interrogations.

AGAPI,VIBRATIONAL FREQUENCIES,

Universe is made up of cosmic energies and
these energies are in the form of vibrations.
And we are all connected to each other through
these vibrations. We see, feel and perceive with
the help of these vibrations, including rocks,
stones, mountains, trees, people, and animals
and so on. Everything in this universe has energy
of different frequencies around us. It is all
measurable in hertz. Hertz are electromagnetic
waves and one hertz equals to one cycle per
second.
We all get energy from food. Eating food has
become more of a chore than a time of the day
where one can appreciate and relish the food in
front of them. But we are so caught up in this
everyday hustle and bustle of the world that we
just dump it in our tummies. All foods have vibrations
and they in turn affect our body. There

is a stark difference in the appearances and behaviors
of people who eat junk/fast food and
those who consume fresh organic food.
Eating fresh fruits and veggies off the trees and
plants have high vibrational frequencies and
maximize its benefits. The sun is a vital source
of energy for everyone here on planet earth.
The ancient Greeks considered food a very important
part of life and its cycle. Cooking with
gratitude and “agapi” that is- unconditional
love brought good energies and vibrations to it.
We can connect to the higher power, nature and
our surroundings better if we consume highly
nutritious foods. Food is a common ground,
it’s a universal language. It is one thing that
connects us, with ourselves and with others. It
heals, protects and nourishes. Eating is a spiritual
experience and it requires time and love.
Talking about universe and vibrations, the
whole universe is nothing but energy. We are
beings who radiate signature vibrations and
energy and this is what quantum physics has
shown us time and again. The atom has no
physical structure, it is an invisible energy.
Not a tangible matter. Quantum mechanics reveals
that there is no “physicality” in the world.
Some new tests support the theory that the reality
doesn’t exist if we don’t look at it or measure
it. At the quantum level, it is all a matter of
perception. Since, an experiment result depends
on how it was measured at the end. Hence, the
world around us is an illusionary product of our
mind. Scary, isn’t? There have been some really
interesting Quantum experiments that show the
same.
Carl Jung and Wolfgang Pauli often said that
the ‘laws of physics and consciousness should
be seen as complementary’. If the said world
around us is an illusion we all have created.
Then it is safe to say that we have the power
to change it as well. What we give, we get.
The universe is a mirror, the things that happen
around us is a byproduct of our thoughts and
energies reflected back at us.

Sports season/Star Athletes of DU

Delhi University is not just popular for its
soaring cut offs but also because of the wholesome
development of the numerous young
students that walk into its premises every year.
It provides them a platform to bring out the
best within them. The university has been active
in all spheres- academics, extra-curricular
activities and sports and the legacy its students
have left behind is commendable. From the
badshah of bollywood to the shehenshah, our
Honorable Prime Minister or sportspersons
like Gautam Gambhir were students of our
very own Delhi University. This is not a thing
of the past; there are exceptional people who
are carrying this legacy forward.
Let’s get to know better some of our DU-ites
who are making it real big in sports:
1. Athlete Sharad Kumar- Kirorimal College
The para athlete, whose left leg was affected
by polio at the age of two, was banned for
two years after testing positive and on June
19 this year, he became eligible to participate
again. As the saying goes, “Where there is a
will, there is a way,” and a determined Sharad
continued with his regular fitness regime, qualified
for the Asian Para Games in Incheon and
clinched a gold medal at the very same. He
completed his graduation in Political Science
from Kirorimal College. A positive aspect of
the ban was that a motivated Sharad cracked
the Jawaharlal Nehru University admission
exam and got himself enrolled in a Masters
course in international relations. Sharad
aspires to perform well at the World Championship
in Qatar next year as it will give him a
direct entry into the Olympics.
2. Footballer Aditi Chauhan- Jesus and Mary
College
Aditi has become the first Indian woman and
third Indian to be signed by a top English club.
She played for Loughborough University in
Leicestershire, where she was pursuing her
masters in sports management. Despite her
wanting to play for the Football Association
Women’s Super League, as recommended
by her coach, she chose West Ham, as they
were looking for a goalkeeper. Not just sports,
Aditi was good in studies as well. She scored
more than 93% in class XII and went on to
pursue B. Com from Jesus and Mary College.
At some point, she wants to work towards
developing women’s football India by starting
her own academy.
3. Squash Player Harshit Muchhal- Hansraj
College
Harshit has played a lot of tournaments around
the country and outside the country, representing
India. He recently bagged gold at All India
Inter-University Squash Championship this
year. Harshit who started playing at the age of
12, recently also won accolades after making
it to the Top 5 Squash players in India. He is
a 3rd year student pursuing B.COM (H) at
Hansraj College and the captain of the college
Squash Team. He is also part of the Hansraj
Dramatics Society. He would definitely want
to take up Squash as a career and putting in a
lot of effort to get there. He wants to play with
the world’s best players. However, his ultimate
achievement as a squash player would be never
giving up on this sport.
As a long as we have such talented people,
I don’t think DU is going to lose its ‘swag’
and the rising number of applicants each year
proves it.

Music scene over 3 decades and top 15
love ballads for the season

The music scenes from the 60’s to the
80’s saw some great transformations.
The 60s period experienced the beats
movement, in the UK, with successful
bands like-The Beatles, The Spencer
Davis Group, Rolling Stones, The
kinks etc. The movement was sort of
responsible for the British invasion in
the United States. And the Americans
in turn influenced the beats groups
with R&B, soul and surf music to
their original rock compositions.
Resulting in a whole new scene, to
which everyone was grooving. The
60s music scene was a complicated
one, and there were so many experiments
and every song had a different
interpretation. The era saw a lot of
rock, psychedelic rock, British blues,
R&B, and soul music. The Doors,
Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, The
Beatles, The Spencer Davis Groups
were popular bands during this time.
70’s was the epoch of soft rock revolution,
with influences from R&B
and rock. And it also saw the rise of
the disco, avant-garde jazz and funk.
The music produced during this period
definitely goes beyond its time. It
transcends it, and that’s the beauty of
it. I grew up listening to a lot of 70s
music, since my mum had a huge collection
of vinyls and cassettes . The
songs were simple yet they conveyed
so much. There was something so upbeat
about it.
Ah! The 80’s the beautiful 80s. This
period had a very diverse music
scene. It saw the emergence of new
wave, gothic rock, smooth jazz, synth
pop, glam rock and the dance music.
Digital recording and synthesizers
were commonly used. North America
saw music icons like- Madonna,
Michael Jackson, Prince, and Whitney
Houston. They gained worldwide
popularity because of their permanent
fixtures on MTV. Michael Jackson
was the most successful Pop and
R&B artist in history. With “Thriller”
being the best selling album of all
time. And the world went bonkers
over his famous moonwalk. Madonna
was the best female artist of the
decade. Her studio album, True Blue,
Like a Virgin became the best selling
albums of the 80s.
The UK and Europe saw Joy Division,
Siouxsie and the Banshees,
Bauhaus, Love and Rockets and
New Order dominating the post punk
scene in the early part of the decade.
The Police, The Smiths, The Cure.
Teardrop Explodes, The Fall etc
gravitated away from the dark sonic
scene, to a more alternative kind.
The Smiths were the “one truly vital
voice of the 80’s” according to the
Q’ Magazine. The Smiths lyrics had
a depressing exterior but were full of
sardonic humour.
And later the Goth Rock developed
from the Post-punk scene. The Sisters
of Mercy and Fields of the Nephilim
were pretty popular back then. And

Written and sung by Lou Reed. According to his
book, Between Thought and Expression,

by Shelley Albin, his first love.

that the words literally cut through. The soft
warm guitar and the tambourine in the intro is
just mesmerizing.

This song shows what love
really is. It has ups and
downs but in spite of that,

captivates the listeners. It’s a

Music is a universal language just
like love is. It is sometimes hard to
describe due to its magical nature,
but that’s where music steps in.
Expression of love through songs has
been going on since forever. There
is something about it that communicates
with us at a whole new level.
As Paul McCartney said: “Some people
want to fill the world with silly
love songs. And what’s wrong with
that?” I couldn’t agree more.
