“Petrified wood is literally wood
that turned into stone”
It’s the result of a tree or tree-like plants having completely transitioned to stone
by the process of permineralization. This process occurs underground, when the
wood gets buried under sediment and is initially preserved due to lack of oxygen
which inhibits aerobic decomposition. All the organic materials are being replaced
by minerals, mostly a silicate, such as quartz. The petriied wood retains its
original structure. All pieces are unique and vary in colour and/or shape.
