Visual Art<br />
Greetings from Visual Arts! It is a particularly busy and<br />
exciting time of year for our department. Over fifteen<br />
of our students had their work shown in Polk County’s<br />
High School Visual Arts Showcase entitled Transcendence<br />
that was held at the Polk Museum of Art. Our own<br />
Camryn Lewis was honored with the purchase award for<br />
this show.<br />
Harrison once again played host to the annual Sister Cities<br />
International Young Artists Showcase. This year’s theme<br />
was “Peace Through People.” Harrison students Jocelyn<br />
Abaray (9 th grade), Brooke Broxterman (11 th grade), and<br />
Alexis Burns (11 th grade) took first, second, and third<br />
place respectively.<br />

Nicholas Gauthier stands in front of his artwork at the<br />
Florida State Fair. Nicholas was one of only 32<br />
students whose work was accepted from around the state.<br />
Stefani Shoreibah (11 th grade) headed up a charity project<br />
which she called “Clay for Crohn’s.” She and several<br />
students from the department created clay sculptures and<br />
2D artwork which were on display and for sale during the<br />
Sister Cities event. Her efforts raised over $800 which<br />
went toward research in the fight against Crohn’s Disease.<br />
This year’s senior exhibition is called Untitled, 20x16<br />
and is currently on display at the Polk Museum of Art.<br />
Courtney Rayne Farlow and Amaris Mercado received<br />
purchase awards from the museum. The work is on display<br />
until March 6.<br />
Out of the total 90 pieces accepted for this year’s “Creative<br />
Youth 15th Congressional District Competition,” 40<br />
are from Harrison students – the largest number we have<br />
had accepted into this show to date! The Creative Youth<br />
show will be on exhibit at PMoA from March 12 to April<br />
17 with an awards ceremony on April 16 at 11:00 a.m.<br />

Our junior and senior classes have been working toward<br />
completing their AP portfolio requirements and have had<br />
visits from a number of college representatives which included<br />
presentations and portfolio reviews. Among the<br />
visits were Ringling College of Art and Design, Maryland<br />
Institute College of Art, and School of the Art Institute of<br />
Chicago.<br />
We enjoyed a recent visit from the Legoland caricature<br />
department. Students experienced hands on demonstrations<br />
of the art of caricature, as well as networking opportunities<br />
and spring/summer job prospects for young<br />
artists.<br />
