Visual Art
Greetings from Visual Arts! It is a particularly busy and
exciting time of year for our department. Over fifteen
of our students had their work shown in Polk County’s
High School Visual Arts Showcase entitled Transcendence
that was held at the Polk Museum of Art. Our own
Camryn Lewis was honored with the purchase award for
this show.
Harrison once again played host to the annual Sister Cities
International Young Artists Showcase. This year’s theme
was “Peace Through People.” Harrison students Jocelyn
Abaray (9 th grade), Brooke Broxterman (11 th grade), and
Alexis Burns (11 th grade) took first, second, and third
place respectively.
Florida State Fair. Nicholas was one of only 32
students whose work was accepted from around the state.
Stefani Shoreibah (11 th grade) headed up a charity project
which she called “Clay for Crohn’s.” She and several
students from the department created clay sculptures and
2D artwork which were on display and for sale during the
Sister Cities event. Her efforts raised over $800 which
went toward research in the fight against Crohn’s Disease.
This year’s senior exhibition is called Untitled, 20x16
and is currently on display at the Polk Museum of Art.
Courtney Rayne Farlow and Amaris Mercado received
purchase awards from the museum. The work is on display
until March 6.
Out of the total 90 pieces accepted for this year’s “Creative
Youth 15th Congressional District Competition,” 40
are from Harrison students – the largest number we have
had accepted into this show to date! The Creative Youth
show will be on exhibit at PMoA from March 12 to April
17 with an awards ceremony on April 16 at 11:00 a.m.
Our junior and senior classes have been working toward
completing their AP portfolio requirements and have had
visits from a number of college representatives which included
presentations and portfolio reviews. Among the
visits were Ringling College of Art and Design, Maryland
Institute College of Art, and School of the Art Institute of
Chicago.
We enjoyed a recent visit from the Legoland caricature
department. Students experienced hands on demonstrations
of the art of caricature, as well as networking opportunities
and spring/summer job prospects for young
artists.
