BACKGROUNDS<br />

<strong>Office</strong> and certified through the<br />

California Commission on Peace<br />

<strong>Office</strong>rs Standards and Training (POST)<br />

for sworn and civilian members. Patrol<br />

deputies and dispatchers are mandated<br />

to receive 24 hours of POST certified<br />

training within a two-year period. Once<br />

again, the San Luis Obispo <strong>County</strong><br />

Sheriff’s <strong>Office</strong> was at 100 percent<br />

POST compliance with all applicable<br />

employees. This is a rarity in the state of<br />

California and a result of the exemplary<br />

efforts of the Patrol and Civilian Training<br />

Section training coordinator.<br />

During <strong>2015</strong>, the Training Unit achieved<br />

the following notable accomplishments:<br />

• Installed a new Force Options<br />

Simulator at the Cal Fire Training<br />

Facility in Los Osos, which<br />

provides training for the most<br />

difficult real-world situations.<br />

• Hosted an “Active Shooters:<br />

Behavioral Indicators and Threat<br />

Management Principles” seminar<br />

presented by FBI Special Agent<br />

Jeff Cugno at the Clark Center in<br />

Arroyo Grande, attended by over<br />

200 individuals including local<br />

school officials and fire and law<br />

enforcement personnel.<br />

The Training Unit also coordinated<br />

countywide training for blood alcohol<br />

Draeger test devices, Emergency Vehicle<br />

Operators Course training in conjunction<br />

with the Allan Hancock Academy, canine<br />

liability, firearms, 11-99 trauma, gang<br />

awareness and instructor development<br />

for custody personnel.<br />

INVESTIGATION<br />

UNIT CONSISTS<br />

of three investigators who are<br />

responsible for the investigation of all<br />

sworn and civilian applicants within the<br />

Sheriff’s <strong>Office</strong>.<br />

APPROXIMATELY 90<br />

BACKGROUNDS WERE<br />

COMPLETED IN <strong>2015</strong>.<br />

The background investigator compiles a<br />

report that includes the applicant’s<br />

personal history, driver’s license record,<br />

warrant checks, credit history,<br />

Computer Voice Stress Analyzer<br />

Examination results, medical<br />

examination and psychological<br />

examination. The Background<br />

Investigation Unit ensures background<br />

checks are in compliance with the<br />

California Commission on Peace<br />

<strong>Office</strong>rs Standards and Training,<br />

departmental statutes and regulations,<br />

and procedures associated with the<br />

investigation process.<br />
