George Bernanos’ “Diary of A Country Priest.” He and I had decided on this theme for his mass of
farewell upon his retirement in 2005. It later had become a joke with us, after we realized we incorrectly
remembered this to be the last line of the book. It was shortly after his announcement of the
terminal diagnosis that we shared the irony of the actual last line: “Je crois qu’il est mort presque aussitôt,”
which translates: “ and he died just then.” It didn’t seem so funny now.
