Greetings Alumni,
As I come to know more of you, I rediscover what has energized me
about Fisher for 30 years: this college does its job exceptionally well.
Fisher continues to create a strong, durable foundation for students.
How do I know this? The Class of 2010 – which is facing the toughest
job market since the Depression – reports that they are securing jobs.
Our accreditation was renewed and expanded degree programs are
being rolled-out, and innovative partnerships find us offering Master’s
degrees. Fisher is assisting veterans as they return home; guiding
students through a four-year career sequence; offering study abroad
options; and weaving technology throughout the curriculum.
This is a critical and exciting time. To chart the next five years, I have
initiated a strategic planning process. These strategic goals — to pursue
deliberate institutional growth…to excel in teaching and learning
…to enhance and formalize the student experience …to attain
prominence regionally and abroad…to expand the Fisher
community…to universally implement assessment, evaluation,
and planning — will become the foundation of Fisher’s ambitions.
This Just In:
FisherNews
On August 17, 2010, Jane Roberge ‘11, a lifeguard at Old
Orchard Beach, Maine, rescued two children. Major John
Crowley of the U.S. Air Force Reserve witnessed the rescue, and
relayed Jane’s extraordinary efforts in a letter to Director of
Alumni Relations Kristen Sherman:
Without hesitation, Ms. Roberge radioed for
backup…and went in. She swam far out and
reached a teenage girl and her younger
brother – in time!
Guards crashed the scene [and] brought the
children back to the beach. Both collapsed into
their mother’s arms. The girl just would not let
go. I will never forget this sight – it confirmed
this was a lifesaving rescue.
I was so impressed with Ms. Roberge that, after
events had slowed down, I went up to her to
ask her name so I could report her conduct for
official commendation. Later that day, I reported
the events to the Town’s Chief of Fire & Rescue.
When asking her name, Ms. Roberge noticed
my Red Sox shirt and said she liked it, and
Boston, where she attended Fisher College.
Fisher just got bigger. In July 2010, Fisher
acquired 111 Beacon Street (formerly the
Butera School of Art). The recently-refaced
brownstone is an ideal addition to the 12
buildings currently owned by the College.
President Thomas McGovern marveled at the
opportunity of buying a building across the
street from the College’s flagship building at
118 Beacon Street: “This purchase signals
our continuing growth while solidifying our
presence on this historic Back Bay corner.”
The College’s Fashion Institute is the primary beneficiary:
Computer-Aided Design (CAD) equipment previously used
by the art students has quickly modernized Fisher’s fashion
design program. Emily Banis, Director of the Fashion Institute,
commented, “I expect Fashion Design, which is Fisher’s largest
two-year program, to become more attractive to prospective
students even as it produces the next generation of fashionistas.”
Several new classrooms and offices are expected to be brought
into use over the next 12 months.
SPRING CONVOCATIONS
At the tail end of Fashion
Week 2010, fashion
students made their
annual fall pilgrimage to New York City
and visited with Denise Foley ’84,
former Visual Director of Bergdorf
Goodman. In addition to receiving expert
career advice from Denise, students met
curators from the private archives of
Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger.
It Seemed Like Yesterday…
They came back to campus! More than 80 alumni representing 19 classes,
including nine milestone years and 11 states, celebrated Reunion 2010 on
a brilliant autumn day. Lunch was held at the Hampshire House with
signature champagne cocktails, lively conversation and school spirit. In
addition to campus tours (including a not-so-secret visit to their old dorm
rooms), alumni were treated to a handwriting analysis by Pat Senich ’54
(who revealed that President Sanford Fisher examined applicants’
handwriting to determine roommate assignments) and had the opportunity
to share their memories — on-camera —through the Archive Project. View
these at fisher.edu/archiveproject.
In his remarks, President McGovern noted: “More alumni are celebrating
reunion than ever before. We are thrilled you are coming back and know that
Fisher’s achievements are yours — we look forward to sharing these with
you each and every year.”
Serving Those Who Seek Knowledge
By Joshua McKain,
College Librarian
The democratization of information is perhaps the most powerful trend of the
21st century. But no matter what era, the library stands as society’s best and greatest
mark of progress.
The Fisher College Library remains a vital space — even when accessed remotely
— for learning. A library is a meeting place. It allows us to transmit information,
opinions, and news. The Fisher Library has a rich history of supporting the
curriculum and the professional and personal interests of its community. I am proud
that Fisher embraces the essential mandate of college libraries.
earned a master's degree and
wore many hats at Fisher dating
as far back as 1944 (the first
yearbook that we have in the
Library), and she was Librarian
until 1962. Ruth Eddy served
from 1962 to 1967. Ellinor
Pederson, a legend at Fisher,
was Librarian from 1966 to
1987. Krista McLeod took
over for the 1987-1988 school
year, followed by Nancy
Spence who served until 1993.
Kevin Coakley-Welch led the
Library until 1996, when my
tenure — 14 years now —
Faces of Fisher
No matter where life takes you, Fisher College is the place that started you on your way.
Countless alumni say that Fisher gave them their foundation. Faces of Fisher profiles several
of these graduates – each of whom attribute some achievement or moment to their Fisher
experience – and we invite all alumni to share their story about how Fisher launched them into life.
I’m from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts and live in Boston’s Back
Bay. I am the Women’s Shoe Buyer for Karmaloop.com,
a global giant in street wear and urban and contemporary
culture. It’s an online re-seller of name brand underground
fashion. We constantly evolve and keep customers motivated
to buy, even in a recession. Karmaloop is an internationally
recognized brand and has the absolute edge on trends
and popularity.
While a student at Fisher I worked part-time for another onlineretailer
based in Boston, Lunaboston.com, that specialized
in designer handbags, shoes, and accessories. That job
prepared me for my position at Karmaloop – and anything to
come in the future. In the summer of 2006, I worked as a sales
intern for L.A.M.B. in New York City, the brand of rocker and
fashion icon Gwen Stefani. (Working with Gwen on a fashion
show can’t really be considered “work,” though!)
Joe Farese ‘09
While at Fisher, my mentor and strongest influence, without
question, was Professor Teresa Howe. I worked with her very
closely on my class year’s fashion show. She was open-minded
and listened to her students. Most important, she was not afraid
to evolve with and embrace the future of fashion. I consider
her a fashion icon. Another icon who has influenced me is
Alexander McQueen. I have been an avid follower and
collector of his ready-to-wear and accessories for years.
I don’t have a lot of downtime, but I do have a secret passion
for role-playing video games. I’m obsessed with the Final Fantasy
video game franchise. I am a geek at heart!
In all seriousness, buying is a lifestyle, not a 9-to-5 job. When I
am not in the office, I am shopping online for myself, reading shoe
blogs, or meeting with brand representatives for dinner meetings.
Editor: Thank you to all Fashion alumni who shared their
thoughts about Professor Terry Howe. Like Joe, Jaid
DeVencenzo ’94 captured the sentiment perfectly, writing,
“You are my favorite teacher of all time. You made such an
impact on my life and career. I think of you often and am
so happy you get to enjoy your time a little more selfishly –
you deserve it! And I must say – you haven’t changed a bit!
You look amazing! Congratulations on your retirement.”
InTrouble with
the Pentagon
Connie
(Bisceglia) Lawler ‘60
Professor Mike Meadows’ Digital Documentary class interviewed many alumni during Reunion as a part of the Fisher College
Archive Project. Connie answered students’ questions about her Fisher experience and that she came to Fisher – her first
time in Boston – from New York.
Graduating in 1960, Connie shared memories of her life at
this former all-girls school, the times she had with many friends,
and fond recollections of Mrs. McGee, the house mother
of Andrew Hall. After Fisher, Connie returned to New York
for a lengthy career with American Airlines. Starting as a
stewardess, Connie moved into upper management and
eventually ran their training for the entire East Coast.
Turning more personal, Connie shared a touching story about
her experience with the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) in the
Persian Gulf War. In 1991, the U.S. Government tapped
American Airlines to fly into Saudi Arabia. Flight attendants
were allowed to fly only as far as Milan, Italy. Connie
recounted: “So from Milan, management flew the planes —
we were the oldest crew in history. The war was on, so we
were covered under the Geneva Conventions. From Milan,
we flew to Turkey and then, escorted by F-2 fighter planes,
onto King Fahd International Airport. It was radio silence and
we landed at dark.”
The mission had been by the book, until the crew “got in
trouble with the Pentagon.” Connie remembered: “As we lined
up at the tarmac, we raised the United States flag and rigged
the PA system. We played Whitney Houston’s version of
the Star Spangled Banner – you know, the one she sang at
the Super Bowl.” Five missions and three weeks later, all of
the troops had been taken out of harm’s way.
After 25 years with American Airlines, Connie is enjoying
retirement in New York City with her husband (wingman) of
43 years. You can hear Connie’s story in her own words at
Wendy (Overbaugh) Hickey ‘94
Common
Traveling a
Path
Rosanne (Ursino) Klovee ‘91
8
When Wendy Hickey and Rosanne Klovee met, little did they know just how much they had in common. The two hit it
off immediately and discussed their plans to become family law attorneys. When we sat down with Rosanne and
Wendy, they happily recounted memories of their days at Fisher.
A couple of years ago, while walking toward their offices,
Rosanne and Wendy started talking about law school. Both attended
Suffolk Law School while working full-time as paralegals.
One of them, neither remembers which, mentioned that she had
attended Fisher. The two laughed about the similar paths they had
followed prior to and since earning degrees in Paralegal Studies.
Rosanne recalled a hot August day, shortly after she had
informed her parents that she would not be going to college
but planned to find a job and marry her high school sweetheart.
Her parents were less than enthused. So, on this particular
summer day, Rosanne’s mother told her that a representative
had called from Fisher to ask where Rosanne had decided to
attend school. The caller surely didn’t expect Rosanne’s mother
crying about how her daughter was throwing her life away.
Rosanne’s mother had news of her own: Rosanne was going
to take the Green Line for the first time for an interview at Fisher.
After waiting beside the marble staircase, Rosanne was
interviewed by the head of Admissions.
the beauty of the neighborhood, the friendly staff, and the
architecture. Wendy decided to attend Fisher 15 minutes after
arriving for her tour.
Wendy credits Fisher’s caring teachers, including Charles
Perkins, Karen Myers, and Dean Walton, with giving her the
confidence to further her education at law school — something
she never imagined she would do. Even more, as an RA,
Wendy gained “the tools to assert myself and work with my
peers in a position of authority – a great ability to have when
trying to negotiate a divorce settlement or arguing an issue
to a judge.” Sixteen years later she is still employed by
Nissenbaum Law Offices where she now handles all aspects
of high end, high conflict family law cases.
The one thing Wendy found missing from her Fisher experience
was athletics. Wendy complained to anyone who would listen
that she wanted to play basketball. Then, to her surprise, Fisher
▲
▲
▲
One hour later, Rosanne was enrolled. Her mother was thrilled!
After a short time, Rosanne was as well. She enjoyed her classes,
particularly those with Dean Walton and David Smith. She fondly
remembers Karen Myers and couldn’t forget former President
Charles Perkins, who would see Rosanne and whisper as she
walked down the hall: “Rosanne Ursino – Star!” (Rosanne and
Wendy shared a good laugh when Wendy told her Professor
Perkins would whisper “Wendy Overbaugh – Star!”)
“I chalk it up to fate that I ended up there,” says Rosanne, who
is grateful to Fisher for instilling in her the “self-respect I needed
to appreciate and embrace education.” Today, Rosanne is a
compassionate advocate for her clients at Carney & Bassil.
She has been recognized as a Rising Star by Boston Magazine
and Super Lawyers Magazine.
Wendy’s decision to attend Fisher was perhaps as unexpected
as Rosanne’s. Growing up in a Connecticut suburb, she wanted
to attend a big college in a big city. Wendy, a huge college
basketball fan, wanted a Big East school. However, like
Rosanne, Wendy’s parents had different ideas. Her parents
convinced her to visit Fisher. “Shock,” is the only word Wendy
could think of to describe her impression of Fisher – the intimacy,
formed a basketball team for Wendy’s second year. “ We
practiced at Wheelock because there was no gym. There
were only seven members of our team and we only won one
game – but we had a great time! We were so happy to have
a team that we were willing to do whatever it took.” Wendy
recalled one game where Fisher only had four players. Rather
than forfeit, Wendy suited-up her 13-year-old sister.
Rosanne and Wendy have become good friends. Their lives
took yet another similar turn and the two were there to support
each other. Rosanne struggled with infertility, including the loss
of six pregnancies. Finally, her son Jack was born in 2005
and her family became complete in 2008 when she brought
her daughter, Anna, home from Guatemala. Wendy went
through similar struggles, but, after three losses, Wendy gave
birth to twins, Caitlyn and Colman, who are now sixteen
months old. When the twins had their first birthday party,
Rosanne was there, and when Anna’s adoption was finalized,
Wendy was there.
Rosanne and Wendy aspire to practice together. For now, they
know that whatever paths they take, the lessons they learned
at Fisher will guide the way.
Are you up to the challenge?
$75,000
Challenge Grant
from the
Lloyd G. Balfour Foundation to Support
The Common Experience
What is The Common Experience? It is Fisher’s comprehensive firstyear
program designed to improve the freshman year — the most
pivotal time in a student’s academic career. The results have been
a more engaged student body, improved academic performance,
and, crucially, increased retention rates.
We are thrilled to announce that the Balfour Foundation has put a
challenge to the Fisher community. The Balfour Foundation will
match every dollar – $1 to $1 – to The Common Experience
between now and December 31, 2012 up to $75,000. The
Board of Trustees has pledged $20,000 to this effort.
In Fall 2011, The Common Experience will be offered to all
freshmen. The grant will spur the development of theme-based
courses aligned with majors and industries; e-portfolios and other
technologies; customized programs targeting student needs; and
first-year pedagogy among the faculty.
Rise to the challenge! When you make your gift, write “Balfour
Home Field Advantage
In a first, Fisher College
secured an agreement
from the City of Lynn to
use City-owned facilities
as the Falcons’ home
field and home court for
the next five years.
President McGovern said, “Just like our recent purchase of 111 Beacon
Street, this agreement exemplifies Fisher’s growth and its ability to
expand for the benefit of our students.”
“A home field has been an elusive goal,” said Scott Dulin, Athletics
Director and Head Baseball Coach. Noting that travel time to and
from practice and games for baseball and softball players was
slashed from 35 to 13 miles, Coach Dulin said, “For our studentathletes,
it is a labor of love. I’m looking forward to our hanging
more championship banners over the next decade.”
Courtney Gollotto ’12, who plays softball for the Falcons, said, “My
teammates, and all of our athletes, are excited to continue our success
closer to campus. We hope students, parents, and alumni will come
cheer us on.”
Built in 1940 by the Works Progress Administration, Fraser Field is
a hidden gem with a storied baseball history. The Boston Red Sox,
Detroit Tigers, and Seattle Mariners fielded minor league clubs at
Fraser, and baseball greats such as Roy Campanella, Ted Williams,
and Johnny Pesky, along with dozens of other professional players,
graced the diamond. Six state championships have been won by
Lynn squads over the years.
A short distance away, the men’s and women’s basketball teams
have hosted teams from across New England and the Northeast.
Fisher Athletics
at
In a celebration of the first decade of Fisher
Athletics, more than 150 students, staff, and
alumni gathered at the Cottage Park Yacht Club
in Winthrop, Massachusetts on a cool October
evening. Athletes and non-athletes participated in the
Triathlon – darts, bowling, and pool – while all of our boosters bid on the exciting
silent auction and raffle items. Falcons supporters raised nearly $8,000 to assist the College’s
156 student-athletes with on-the-road academic tutors and scholarships.
Three new members of the Hall of Fame were inducted – Luis Lara ’08, Anthony Perry ’08,
and President Thomas M. McGovern — bringing the total number of inductees to 20. Each
received overwhelming cheers from teammates, friends, and family. Baseball standout Stephen
Clarke ’13 was also recognized as one of only 13 national Red Cross Scholars, who, as part
of the NAIA’s Champions of Character program, traveled to Washington DC and received
mentoring and leadership training from senior Red Cross officials.
in Hudson, Massachusetts and attended Fisher
when it was known as Fisher Business School. Mom
enjoyed her time there and it prepared her for her
occupational life as a ‘one-woman office.’ She
began in medical records at Waltham Hospital as
a very young woman and many years later retired
from a small business in Marlboro, Massachusetts
which created prototype displays for museums.
Mom's ability to keep books, payroll, billing, and
accounts payable [and be the] receptionist helped
her keep her own home right up to her death —
45 years after she was widowed at 35 years old.
She used her sewing and cooking skills to run extra
educational, seamstress, and catering businesses
out of our home – after a day at the office — to
supplement her single woman's income
throughout the 1960s-1980s.”
Responding to the cause of building the future of Fisher
students, alumni and friends have been overwhelmingly
supportive of the Fisher Fund. To date, 329 donors
have contributed $177,654. The Fisher Fund is
$250,000 from 700 donors. “In my five years, I
have seen annual giving grow exponentially and
know the impact that alumni gifts have on the
Fisher experience,” said Richard A. Levitt, Vice
President for Institutional Advancement. “I hear firsthand
from students how much they appreciate our
alumni, who keep their college moving.”
Just like they did.
The E.H. & M.C. Fisher Legacy Society was created in 2009 as a way
to recognize alumni and friends who support Fisher through a planned
gift. Members receive a welcome gift and certificate upon joining,
recognition in the annual Honor Roll, and an invitation to an annual event
with the President. Of greater importance, however, is the knowledge
that these gifts assist us in imagining the Fisher of tomorrow – today.
