<strong>The</strong> <strong>Introduction</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> S<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuckoo</strong> - 8<br />

<strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Gracious One, having descended from <strong>the</strong> sky in that<br />

delightful place, sat down on <strong>the</strong> appointed noble <strong>Buddha</strong> seat in a<br />

sandy bed, with his unmatched <strong>Buddha</strong>-gl<strong>or</strong>y shining. Those Kings,<br />

having w<strong>or</strong>shipped <strong>the</strong> Gracious One, sat down.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Teacher, knowingly, asked: “Why have you come, Great<br />

Kings?”<br />

“Not f<strong>or</strong> seeing <strong>the</strong> river, venerable Sir, not f<strong>or</strong> play, but having got<br />

ready f<strong>or</strong> battle in this place, we have come.”<br />

“This dispute is on account <strong>of</strong> what, Great Kings?”<br />

“On account <strong>of</strong> water, venerable Sir.”<br />

“What is water w<strong>or</strong>th, Great Kings?”<br />

“It has little w<strong>or</strong>th, venerable Sir.”<br />

“And what is earth w<strong>or</strong>th, Great Kings?”<br />

“It is priceless, venerable Sir.”<br />

“What are Nobles w<strong>or</strong>th, Great Kings?”<br />

“Nobles are also priceless, venerable Sir.”<br />

“Why would you destroy Nobles, Great Kings? <strong>The</strong>re is certainly no<br />

satisfaction in this quarrel. Because <strong>of</strong> a quarrel, Great Kings, a<br />

certain tree god and a black lion were bound by anger reaching
