Your small company decided to do a Go-Green Week
because a lot of you [the employees] have been asking
for it. Every day you will do something green. Your goal
is to have the maximum positive impact for the
environment while also decreasing your expenses.
BRAINSTORMING FROM FIRST MEETING
1. Sending out about 1000
emails/day. That’s at
least 1000 printouts/day
at other companies.
How could we encourage
other companies not to
print our emails?
2. Grow our own herb, tomato plants, etc. in the backyard of
company building. Save everyone the trip to the
grocery store. Coffee grinds: a great fertilizer!
IN YOUR FIRST MEETING YOU DID SOME
BRAINSTORMING TO SEE THE AREAS
WHERE YOU COULD BE GREENER. YOU
HAVE A LOT OF IDEAS IN THE AIR, AND
SOME OPEN QUESTIONS. DO THE SECOND
MEETING AS FOLLOWS:
Step 1. Use the helpful information
that one of you pulled from the
internet [see below] during the
discussion.
Step 2. Decide on one objective
for each working day. Make sure
that everyone is more or less
happy with the decision.
Step 3. Put down the agreed on
agenda on the next page.
Do we have time for gardening?
3. Can we change conventional light bulbs to more
energy efficient ones?
4. Replace all disposable paper products by 100%
recycled paper products.
5. Set up carpools, encourage people to
bike, or walk to work.
Sounds great, but can we also
somehow reduce the amount of
printing we do?
How can we incentivize (=motivitate) people?
6. Switch all office cleaning products
over to eco-friendly ones to eliminate toxins in our
waste water.
7. Pass out individual recycling cans for every desk next.
8. Cleaners cann’t remember that recyclables go in the
gray dumpster and other trash in the green one.
It’s pointless to recycle if they get this wrong.
9. We have a giant electricity bill.
We need ideas how we can
help them learn this.
We need ideas how to
consume less electricity.
One computer left on overnight equals
the use of an entire 60 watt light bulb.
Little things count a lot. If you are the last
person leaving an office or conference
room, remember to turn off the lights!
It’s easy to add a "Please consider the
environment before printing this email"
signature to your email accounts.
Printing out internal documents double sided
can reduce the volume of printouts.
Compared to regular bulbs giving the same
amount of visible light, CFLs (Compact
Fluorescents) use less power and have a
longer rated life. In the United States, a CFL
can save over US $30 in electricity costs
over the lamp's lifetime compared to a
regular bulb and save 2000 times its own
weight in greenhouse gases.

Looking Toward the Future:
Our Go-Green Week was such a huge success that we will be doing a “Green
Week” once a quarter from here on out. Also, some of the things we did
might be introduced as regular company policies.
Which initiatives from the Go-Green Week should be made mandatory,
do you think?

Al Gore’s movie “An Inconvenient Truth” is great to introduce and discuss this topic.

Read the text carefully.
Years ago there wasn't a problem with
rubbish because things like plastic and
disposable nappies hadn't been invented.
There wasn't so much packaging on items you
bought either. But now with everything so
over packaged wrapped and disposable we
are suffering the consequences of far too
much waste. The trouble is not everything can
be recycled or will rot away. You used to be able to get a refund on glass bottles when you took them
back to the shop. Now they are either collected from your house by the council or you can take them
to a bottle bank.
The fact that paper can be recycled and is easy to dispose is great, but remember paper is made
from trees, which are important to the environment. The rainforests have been slowly disappearing for
a while now. We need them not just because it helps with the climate. They are important as like all
plants they give us oxygen. They are also a home to many animals who rely on them for their
survival.
The best waste is organic, dead leaves; carrot tops, onion skins and so on all rot down and make
fertile soil. This in turn will help the plants and vegetables giving them much needed food. So if you
are able to have a compost heap in your garden you'll be helping the environment and your garden will
love you for it.
Acid rain is another serious problem it is damaging to plants and is caused by pollutants such as
sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. These come from the burning of coal, oil and gas.
Dropping litter is not just a lazy thing to do it makes work for other people, is bad for the
environment and looks ugly. So think before you drop litter either bin it or keep it and then bin it.
When rivers and seas are polluted by waste we are not only stealing their beauty but were spoiling it
for ourselves too. Our health can also suffer. Sadly accidents do occur; oil slicks sometimes happen and
wreck the environment. Animals tend to suffer the most from these incidents. We should really have
in place something that will prevent so much destruction, rather than just waiting for it to happen, then
trying to clean up the damage.
Nuclear waste has been the cause of controversy over the years. Radioactive material leaking out
would be very serious indeed, it can cause real harm. This is why it is the most worrying.
Although we are trying to stop the hole in the ozone layer getting any bigger, nuclear waste is still a
serious problem. The ozone layer protects us from harmful ultra - violet rays. Its hole has been caused
by chlorofluorocarbons (cfc's) a chemical that was found in some products. Refrigerators used to
contain them. So do we care enough about the earth we have inherited and our passing onto future
generations? Or is it now all too late to do anything? Each one of us can make a difference and each
and every one of us is responsible to the environment. It takes care of us; we should take care of it.
No part of our environment has escaped the effects of pollution. All over the world, our land, air and
water have been contaminated by an increasing number of waste materials and substances that issue
daily from factories, homes and vehicles .In some cases, this waste is only an eyesore, which spoils the
beauty of our surroundings, while in other cases, It is a serious threat to our health and can result in
death.
Some of the most dangerous waste substances are, without a doubt, those produced by factories.
Industrial waste often contains toxic substances that can kill plant and animal life. When there is no
proper government control, factories allow these substances to pour into rivers, while their chimneys fill
the atmosphere with poisonous fumes, sometimes in areas no more than a few kilometers from heavily
populated cities.
Nuclear waste is even more hazardous than industrial waste .Although everything is done to ensure
that it is buried safely at great depths, the fact remains that plutonium waste continues to be dangerously
radioactive for 24,000 years, while uranium waste remains so for 700 million years.
In towns and cities, the use of fossil fuels (oil, coal, and gas) for heating results
in large amounts of carbon dioxide filling the atmosphere .Although some cities
have been made "smokeless zones" where no coal or oil fires are allowed, the
exhaust fumes from vehicles on the roads has meant that air pollution continues to
be a major problem.
But, if we stop to think, each of us is guilty of polluting our environment to
some extent. Almost everything we buy today comes in some sort of container or
packaging , made of paper plastic, glass ,or aluminium which we usually throw
away .Besides being expensive to collect, many of these materials -especially
plastic , glass and aluminium -are very difficult to get rid of and lie in huge dumps
on the outskirts of many cities , one of the ugliest types of pollution. Attempts have
been made to encourage factories to recycle these materials , but few have
shown any interest .
How much longer can we allow this pollution to continue? Scientists tell us that
the increased amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere may soon have disastrous effects. They fear
that it will raise average temperatures around the world and cause the polar ice caps to melt .If this
happens ,they say the level of the world's oceans will rise by twelve to eighteen feet (four to six meters ),
and vast populated areas of our planet will be covered by water. Can we afford to make such risks by
continuing to pollute our environment?
The Exxon Valdez Brings Danger to
the Environment
By Jane Runyon
Oil is an important product
in the world's economy. Oil is
used to produce gasoline that
makes cars and trucks run.
Oil is used to heat homes in
the winter. Byproducts of oil
are used in chemical
compounds to make
everything from band-aids to
plastic bottles. Oil is often
transported from country to
country around the world by
large ships. One of these ships almost destroyed an entire living
habitat.
The Exxon Valdez left Valdez, Alaska, on March 24, 1989. This
was a common trip for the oil tanker. It had just been filled with 52
million gallons of oil and was headed south through Prince William
Sound. The captain of the ship, Joseph Hazelwood, radioed the
Coast Guard station in the area. His crew had spotted some small
icebergs in the water that he hoped to avoid by taking a slightly
changed route. The captain then went off to bed and left the ship in
the hands of his third mate.
The helmsman was given instructions to make a turn to the new
course. The turn was not sharp enough. At 12:04 A.M., the Exxon
Valdez struck Bligh Reef. Gallons of oil began to spill from the hull
of the ship. It is estimated that approximately 11 million gallons of
oil spilled into the sea before anything could be done to stop it.
The United States Coast Guard was called. They immediately
closed the Port of Valdez to all sea traffic. No ships were allowed to
come into port and no ships were allowed to leave port.
Environmental response teams were assembled. There was no doubt
that that much oil was going to cause great danger to plant and
animal life for miles around the spill.
The Exxon Oil Company belonged to a group of seven oil
companies called Alyeska. This group came forward and accepted
responsibility for cleaning up the oil. They followed plans that had
been set up for just such an emergency. Other groups joined
Alyeska, the Coast Guard, and environmental teams in short order.
It was decided that the groups had three options in trying to clean
up the oil. They could burn it off, skim it off the surface with
machines, or use chemicals to break the oil up and render it harmless.
Burning the oil was tried first. Large booms, or floating barriers,
were towed between two ships. These booms skimmed the oil off
the top of the water. When the booms were full, the oil was set on
fire. This method worked to a certain extent. Then the weather
turned bad and the burning could no longer be used.
Skimmers were brought to the clean-up site. Not many of these
contraptions were available in the first few hours after the spill.
Those that were brought to skim oil off the water soon clogged up
with thick oil and seaweed. The machinery broke down often, and it
took too much time for the skimmers to be repaired.
Finally, it was time to try and disperse the oil with chemicals.
Alyeska had only 4,000 gallons of the chemicals on hand. They had
no way of spraying the chemical onto the oil. A helicopter was
finally hired and dropped what chemicals it could. It was found that
the chemicals were not mixing with the oil to disperse it, so that
operation was stopped. It became apparent that cleaning up this
huge mess was going to take a lot longer than anyone had hoped.
In the meantime, environmental groups were trying to save any
and all life that they could. Stations were set up in an attempt to
clean birds whose feathers became covered by the sticky oil. It has
been estimated that this one accident caused the immediate deaths of
250,000 birds, 2,800 otters, 300 seals, 250 bald eagles, 22 killer
whales, and billions of eggs of salmon and herring who made their
homes in the seas of Prince William Sound. Researchers believe that
it may take up to thirty years before the effects of the Exxon Valdez
oil spill have been completely cleared up.
The Exxon Valdez was towed to a repair port in San Diego. It
was known around the world as the ship that caused a terrible oil
spill. Is it any wonder that after repairs were complete that the ship
returned to service under a new name?
