Pipe Ramming — Install Steel
Casing 4" (10 cm) to 72" (183 cm)
Under Roads, Railroads, Finished
Landscapes, and Structures
Pipe ramming is often the method of choice in cobble or free
flowing soil conditions. Compared to conventional methods,
pipe ramming cuts down on setup time and offers lower
equipment costs and reduced maintenance costs.
In cobble, rammed pipe can swallow the material whole, including large
rocks and cobble, keeping the casing size to a minimum and saving
cost on the job. In free flowing soils, the material is not removed until
after the casing is installed, reducing the risk of creating voids.
HAMMERHEAD MOLE TOOLS
HydroGuide ® winches are
designed to facilitate
extraction of burst heads
through manholes to
reduce the need for
expensive receiving pits.
New product is attached
to the pneumatic pipe
bursting tool and is
pulled into place as the
tool follows and bursts
the existing line.
Excavation costs can be
reduced on projects from
6" (15 cm) to 12" (30 cm)
(size on size or one
upsize) by utilizing the
manhole exit method.*
The HydroGuide HG12 winch has a patent-pending self-deploying downrigger.
The new HG12 puts advanced design to practical use. No more heavy lifting or
positioning of cumbersome pieces in constricted manholes — the boom is
conveniently raised and lowered by hydraulics and extends to the required length.
The HG12 winch is designed to maximize efficiency and minimize setup time and
effort for pipe bursting, slip lining, pipe pulling, cable pulling, and swage lining.
Setup and teardown can be done in minutes, not hours. The bottom line is less labor
and potentially more profit. The solid, dual capstan design offers constant pulling
force over the entire cable length and helps reduce cable wear. Remote control and
a powerful downhole light put the operator in better control of the burst process.
*Manhole exiting is a patented process of Earth Tool Company LLC, US PATENT 6,299,382 B1.
HammerHead Pneumatic Bursting
System — Engineered for Sewer
Replacement of 6" (15 cm) to 30" (76 cm)
Pipe bursting employs high-powered piercing tools with special bursting
heads to fracture old service lines while pulling in new replacement lines,
and it can be done without affecting expensive surface structures.
HammerHead Mole bursting heads can be removed at the end of the line,
allowing the piercing tool to return to the entrance pit through the new
service line. Because it eliminates an exit pit, excavation costs are cut in
half. Pipe bursting is easy on adjacent utilities because it follows the existing
pipe path and requires a minimum of excavation. This allows you to work in
congested areas without hampering normal traffic flow.

HammerHead HydroBurst Bursting Systems — Designed
for Water / Sewer Replacement 4" (10 cm) to 20" (51 cm)
HydroBurst HB3038 and HB5058
Designed specifically for 2" (50 mm) – 8" (200 mm) gas and
water line replacement. HB3038 and HB5058 systems are
highly efficient, simple to set up, easy to operate, and require a
small pit for the machine. HB3038 and HB5058 systems are fast
— a typical 400' (122 m) job takes only a two-hour round trip
from payout to completion.
Ductile Iron and Steel Slitters
Specially designed slitters are available in 2" (50 mm) – 12" (300 mm)
and feature hardened tool steel cutting disks that are durable and can
slice through non-fracturable pipe such as ductile iron, steel, and PVC
while reducing required tonnage. The first cutting disk pre-slits the pipe;
the second slits or bursts the pipe; and the third cutting disk cuts
through bells, repair clamps, and bolted-style cast couplers.
HydroBurst HB80 — 80 Tons of Pullback Power for 4" (10 cm) to
12" (30 cm) Work
The HydroBurst HB80 Pipe Bursting system is strategically designed
for the contractor looking for a reliable and simple to operate
machine that can be towed on a 12,000 lb (5443 kg)
trailer with a one-ton truck and can complete 85%
(both water and sewer projects) of the pipe bursting
jobs bidding today. The HB80 is designed for high
productivity with features like an auto rod spinner
and torque device, fast 16-second rod payout to provide a
two-hour calculated round trip 400' (122 m) burst.
HydroBurst HB125 — 125 Tons of Pullback for Your Big Jobs
The HydroBurst HB125 Static Pipe Bursting system is designed for the contractor
who wants one machine versatile enough to replace 6" (150 mm) to 20" (500 mm)
diameter pipe in water, gas, and sewer markets. The HB125 is considered the
premier Pipe Bursting machine, with many time-saving features that reduce labor
and improve job speed. Much of the design platform is based on a Pit-Launch HDD
design using 125 tons of pullback with a simple one-man operation. The HB125
design targets the ability to quickly set the machine in place,
hydraulically adjust the height and shore the rear of
the machine, allowing you to
rapidly begin rod payout.
HAMMERHEAD MOLE TOOLS
HammerHead Torqued Joint Rods —
Proven Alloy Steel Rods Utilize API
Style Threaded Joint for Durability
and Flexibility
HydroBurst HB80 and HB125 static pipe-bursting systems
feature an API style threaded joint and heat-treated alloy rod that
have been proven for decades under thrust, pullback, and bend
radii conditions in oil fields and directional drilling.
A torqued joint rod string lends itself to the ability
to handle thrust loads encountered when pushing around
sweeping bends, through encrusted lines, line collapses,
and long burst lengths. Other “loose joint” designs can
buckle if not supported by the host pipe.
HydroBurst rod design: Proven API style thread and torqued joint design provide a uniform rod string.
Rotation ability — Bending torque is placed on the rod string when loads are
applied by sweeping bends or unaccounted for internal pipe conditions.
In addition, rotational torque can be applied when the burst head, blade, or
cutter follows a pipe fracture. As compared to a loose joint system, threaded
round rod systems have the advantage of being unaffected by these torque
loads since the rods can be gripped at any location or orientation. In a “loose
joint” system, any torque induced in the rod string during pullback has the
potential to jam the pullback machine.
ROCK ADAPTABLE TERRAIN TOOL (R.A.T.T.)
Nothing Stops the R.A.T.T.
Not all rock is here to stay, at least if our Rock Adaptable Terrain
Tool (R.A.T.T.) has anything to say about it. The latest Vermeer
innovation for the underground construction industry, this powerful
drillhead tool rips easily through most soil conditions — everything
from soft soil and gravel to cobblestone and solid rock.
The R.A.T.T. drillhead tool is designed for Vermeer
NAVIGATOR HDD models D18x22 to D36x50 Series II.
A single rod setup allows the
operator to utilize the same
machine for bore and backream.
The bent sub design creates a
consistent cutting pattern from
the bit, allowing the tool to
be drilled and steered using
less torque, resulting in less
vibration, optimized cutting
action, and improved efficiency
on the job.
If needed, high
rotational torque
(1770 ft-lb / 2400 Nm)
and thrust / pullback
(maximum force of
machine) can
be applied to the
R.A.T.T. drillhead.
A single rod setup in a pilot bore means there is no need to change the tools as soil conditions change. The 70" (178 cm) length includes
the transmitter housing, two-degree bent sub, bearing housing, and drill bit. The R.A.T.T. is also capable of higher thrust and rotational
torque than similarly-sized rock drilling tools, allowing the operator to optimize cutting efficiency during the bore path. The R.A.T.T. can be
used with various Vermeer HDD tooling connections. In steering mode, the R.A.T.T. steers with a patented oscillating motion of the drill
string. When compared to competitive rock drilling tools on the market today, the R.A.T.T. provides a lower-cost, lower-maintenance option
for drilling through varying soil conditions, including rock.

FLUID-MIXING SYSTEMS
The Right Fluid, in the Right Place,
at the Right Time
The drill rig gets the credit, but the drilling fluid keeps it moving.
Vermeer fluid-mixing systems provide any HDD operation with the
proper supply of wetting agents, polymers, and bentonites to get
the job done with superior results. The venturi / hopper-mixing
systems strategically placed roll jets combine to provide the ideal
mix with lower yield times.
Completely integrated systems offer ultimate performance. Vermeer
drilling fluid systems are comprehensive and include the following
matched components: a mixing system, tank(s) and cradle, a power
unit, roll guns, hoses and centrifugal pump, and plumbing.
