sannisīdati ekodi hoti samādhiyati.<br />

settles down, becomes one-pointed, and concentrated.<br />

Evam-pi bhikkhave bhikkhu kāyagataṁ satiṁ bhāveti.<br />

Like this, monks, does a monk develop mindfulness <strong>related</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> body.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Fourth Absorption<br />

Puna ca paraṁ bhikkhave bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahānā, 83 dukkhassa ca pahānā,<br />

Moreover, monks, a monk, having abandoned pleasure and abandoned pain,<br />

pubbeva somanassadomanassānaṁ atthaṅgamā, 84<br />

and with <strong>the</strong> previous passing away of mental happiness and sorrow,<br />

adukkham-asukhaṁ, 85 upekkhāsatipārisuddhiṁ,<br />

without pain, without pleasure, and with complete purity of mindfulness<br />

owing <strong>to</strong> equanimity,<br />

catutthaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati.<br />

dwells having attained <strong>the</strong> fourth absorption.<br />

So imam-eva kāyaṁ parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena pharitvā nisinno hoti,<br />

He sits suffusing his very own body with complete purity that comes from a cleansed<br />

mind,<br />

nāssa 86 kiñci sabbāva<strong>to</strong> kāyassa parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena apphuṭaṁ<br />

hoti.<br />

so that <strong>the</strong>re is no part of his body unpervaded by <strong>the</strong> complete purity that comes<br />

from a cleansed mind.<br />

Seyyathā pi bhikkhave puriso odātena vat<strong>the</strong>na sasīsaṁ pārupitvā nisinno assa,<br />

Just as if, monks, a man was sitting down after covering (his body) up <strong>to</strong> his head<br />

with a white cloth,<br />

nāssa kiñci sabbāva<strong>to</strong> kāyassa odātena vat<strong>the</strong>na apphuṭaṁ assa.<br />

so that <strong>the</strong>re is no part of his body uncovered by <strong>the</strong> white cloth.<br />

Evam-eva kho bhikkhave bhikkhu<br />

Even so monks, a monk<br />

imam-eva kāyaṁ parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena pharitvā nisinno hoti,<br />

sits suffusing his very own body with complete purity that comes from a cleansed<br />

mind,<br />
