Teams of developers at remote locations collaborating
on highly complex projects are not uncommon
in fields such as CAE, CAM or CAD. This is
standard working practice in these environments.
Collaboration across remote locations poses an
obvious problem:
Multiple, decentralized databases mean that it is
difficult to keep data up-to-date and involve the
time-consuming transfer of large data volumes
which is also restricted by additional bandwidth
limitations. Not to mention the risk to security
caused by local data storage for example at external
service providers such as engineering offices.
Help is at hand with a centralized data storage option
installed in the data centre. Yet this type of
solution is accompanied with specific hardware
and software requirements. Two key requirements
are high-performance hardware such as a
GPU workstation and virtualization in the server
storage area. Central data storage offers significantly
more security and protection against data
loss or theft.
