Teams of developers at remote locations collaborating<br />
on highly complex projects are not uncommon<br />
in fields such as CAE, CAM or CAD. This is<br />
standard working practice in these environments.<br />
Collaboration across remote locations poses an<br />
obvious problem:<br />
Multiple, decentralized databases mean that it is<br />
difficult to keep data up-to-date and involve the<br />
time-consuming transfer of large data volumes<br />
which is also restricted by additional bandwidth<br />
limitations. Not to mention the risk to security<br />
caused by local data storage for example at external<br />
service providers such as engineering offices.<br />
Help is at hand with a centralized data storage option<br />
installed in the data centre. Yet this type of<br />
solution is accompanied with specific hardware<br />
and software requirements. Two key requirements<br />
are high-performance hardware such as a<br />
GPU workstation and virtualization in the server<br />
storage area. Central data storage offers significantly<br />
more security and protection against data<br />
loss or theft.
