Last year Maryam spent the holiday season in the wet,
the snow and the cold life that is homelessness. She found
refuge where she could in vacant lots, the open streets
and shelters. “This year I won’t have to go through that.”
Maryam will now join Deborah’s Place for warm meals, the
support of a community and the security of her own place.
“I have a chance at another year.”
Having had her own home, Maryam never imagined
she would ever experience homelessness. Her previous
independence made her reluctant to ask for help.
“I was old enough to know about pride and dignity. I was
embarrassed.” But after four years on the streets, Maryam
moved into her own place at Deborah’s Place Patty Crowley
Apartments this past April.
“I’ll never forget the blessing I’ve had this year; warmth,
security, clothing, food.” With the security that home
provides, Maryam is now taking the opportunity to care
for health. Her self esteem is back. She now has choices.
She feels that she has a future again. “If it hadn’t been for
the kindness of others I wouldn’t have made it.”
