Transition Information
This semester will be the last at ISP for some of our students and families. If you are a family who is
leaving, our entire team is here to support you and your child during your move. Our counselors
play an important role in this process and will be hosting a transition parent coffee on Thursday,
May 12 at 11AM.
Random Acts of Kindness
April 18 th -22 nd
Next week at Elementary we will celebrate Random Acts of Kindness (RAK)! This will focus on kind words and deeds
and the idea that when you are kind to others without expectation of reward, that kindness in turn always comes
back to you! It’s true kindness! In the hallway near the Teacher’s Lounge we will have a paper tree that starts the
week with empty branches. As the week goes on, counselors and teachers will be passing out paper leaves when they
see kindness in action from students and staff. The student receiving the leaf will write a kind word on it, color it
and cut it out. Throughout the week we will watch our tree bloom and fill with all the kindness being shown at ISP.
During this week make sure to ask your child about the kind deeds they did that day or could try the next day. Did
they challenge themselves to invite a new friend to play at recess? Did they give someone a sincere compliment? Did
they help be an active problem-solver even in a difficult situation? Did they stop and take a deep breath before responding
when they were frustrated?
You can try to do your own random acts of kindness and model this for your children and be part of the discussion!
You could clean out your closet to find items to donate. You model sincere compliments. You could give food or a
special treat to someone to show appreciation.
We are looking forward to a week focused on KINDNESS!!!
In two weeks…
The grade 7 Service Learning Class from third quarter organized a school supply drive to gather
supplies for the sister school, Cerro Viento Rural. As a preface to this activity, students learned
about and discussed Malala´s story, a girl who, despite the circumstances, has stood up for
education for kids and has gone a long way helping them get educated. The 7th graders believed
that they could also do something to support others' education by collecting school supplies.
This project required organizing the contributions from all the middle school students, as well as
the staff. The supplies were gathered over a period of three weeks. The project required a lot of
organization and commitment, but the work paid off as they gathered a generous amount of
pencils, pens, notebooks, colored pencils, etc. Thank you to everyone who supported this project.
IB PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS VISIT THE NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH INSTITUTE
by Aura Stella Urroz IB Psychology
What is happening in IB Psychology?
On April 11 th , the senior students taking IB Psychology went to the National Mental Health Institute
(NMHI). This institute is a specialized center in research, consulting and teaching in the field of mental
health that provides care to people with mental disabilities.
But why the visit? Among the topics treated in class, students learn abnormal psychology. This area of psychology
is concerned with the understanding and treatment of mental disorders such as schizophrenia,
affective disorders, among others.
One of the goals in class is for students to develop an increased awareness of the controversial nature of
this area, along with an appreciation of its ethical considerations.
Many times people have a misconception of what a mental institution is like: they usually picture a cold,
white building where patients are tied down or wearing straitjackets. Though once this might have been
true, this is no longer the way mental patients are treated.
In this field trip, the students were able to see what a mental institution is today. No straitjackets, no white
buildings or locked doors and no cruelty. They found themselves in an opened environment, surrounded
with trees and caring people that follow principles that ensure the protection of mental patients. Students
were able to learn about the type of treatment and services provided to the patients and had the opportunity
to interact with some of the patients. This experience allowed them to get rid of the belief of madhouses
seen in movies and incorporate into their schemas what a mental institution actually is.
ACROSS DIVISIONS: GREEN IN BETWEEN GIN STUDENTS VISIT SECOND GRADERS
In the Disney Pixar film Wall-E, the phrase "I don't want to survive, I want to live," is used when the captain of the
space ship discovers the planet that was once able to sustain life. The movie takes place in the distant future where
Earth is covered in piles of garbage left over from mankind; unfortunately, this scenario is not so unrealistic as
we'd like it to be.
Green In Between has sought to find ways to fix this particular problem before it occurs by bringing awareness to
children as they are the future. On April 12th, our group decided to go and teach second graders about the
importance of planting and how it could make a difference in the world. By doing so, we prepared a presentation
in which we added the theme of Wall-E in order to make it more interesting. We started off by asking these
intelligent second graders questions about the movie and how it relates the real world. We also talked about the
difference between fruits and vegetables and how important they are to humankind, animals and our
surroundings. We explained how plants, no matter how small, have the power to produce oxygen in which we
breathe everyday. Throughout our short lecture, we were able to tell the excitement that the kids had when
learning about plants in general. We ended our lecture by teaching them how to plant. We gave one bean seed
per two students and together they were able to plant their bean and use their imagination to create a fun name
for their plants.
Teaching these kids was such an amazing experience as they would always ask all kind of questions. Questions
that ranged from "Is coconut a fruit or a vegetable" to "Can we plant the seeds that appear in the watermelon?" It
amazes me how they were so intent on learning and their excitement was felt throughout the lecture. I cannot wait
to meet up with them and see the progress of the plants in the near future.
As a member of the group, I believe that humans make up their own future. In order for us to live our life to the
fullest and make the world a better place, we have to take care of our planet. Every little thing makes a big
difference and if we all unite and help out, even if it is by planting, we can live. And we wouldn't have to survive.
