In the OASIS Art Gallery Sense of Place Works by Kevin Tolman arT & CommuniTy Kevin Tolman creates abstract works primarily influenced by the natural world and informed by a sense of place. He can often be found working under the trees at a large easel next to his studio near the Rio Grande. His pieces are created slowly in layer after layer. By taking risks and paying attention to the chance circumstances that arise during this process, he allows each piece to reveal its individual direction and character. If you or someone you know served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, or related civilian services, your story can become part of the collection at the Library of Congress, one of the world’s most respected research and cultural institutions. The US Congress created the Veterans History Project (VHP) in 2000 as part of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. The VHP honors our nation’s veterans by preserving, archiving, and sharing their stories for generations to come. OASIS Albuquerque is the local partner for the VHP. Volunteer OASIS interviewers are trained to record the personal accounts of ALL veterans and civilians working under contract to the armed services (i.e. USO performers). arTs Weekends with O’Keeffe 1 C.S. Merrill C.S. Merrill worked with Georgia O’Keeffe on weekends from 1973-1979 as librarian, secretary, nurse, caregiver, cook, companion, confidante, and reader. She will read from the two books she wrote about the experience: Weekends with O’Keeffe and O’Keeffe Days in a Life; then she will answer questions. These books contain rare insight into O’Keeffe toward the end of her life. Although she has loved serious reading and writing since early childhood, C.S. Merrill did not publish much until she was encouraged by Georgia O’Keeffe. She became very active in the world of poetry and playwriting and worked overseas as a librarian. She served as librarian at Kewa Pueblo Elementary and Middle Schools as well as Cochiti Elementary and Middle Schools. Trips to Europe, China, Japan, and Peru continue to inform her poetry. Experiment with all kinds of materials in this playful, information-packed class. Draw inspiration from scientific illustrations, photography, and fine art sources. Approaches include unusual drawing/ mixed media methods and more. Students come away with finished creative works and techniques applicable to future artistic adventures. All levels welcome. $8 materials fee payable to instructor (cash or check). Limited enrollment. Lea Anderson has been part of the New Mexico art community for over a decade and has discovered much during her adventures in this dramatic and colorful desert environment. Showing installation work as well as painting, drawing, and sculpture, she has exhibited throughout the United States, and internationally in Bangkok, Thailand. As the Albuquerque Museum’s 2015 summer artistin-residence, Anderson recently created the installation piece MERIDIAE, on view through summer 2016. ☞ Note special time Thursdays Jun 2 - Jun 9 1:00 - 3:00 Fee: $50 2 sessions OASIS The People Speak: Folk Art of New Mexico 3 Mireya Cirici Down to earth and close to the heart, folk art reflects connections between art and life and between people and place. Universal and at the same time profoundly local, it expresses the beliefs, lives, and traditions of diverse communities. Instructor Mireya Cirici focuses on two very different New Mexico traditions: Navajo carvings, figurines, and weavings, and Hispanic art of the santeros. Community celebrations such as Day of the Dead and Pueblo Indian dances are also explored. Originally from Spain, Mireya Cirici studied art and history at the University of Barcelona (BA); at La Sorbonne in Paris; at UC San Diego (MA); and at the San Francisco Art Institute. She teaches painting and art history through museums, universities, and as an artist-in-residence in public schools, and conducts painting and art tours. She exhibits her own art widely and has taught for Road Scholar for 12 years.
