ECUADOR EARTHQUAKE – FLASH APPEAL
Food Security
Contact information: Jorge Arteaga (jorge.arteaga@wfp.org), William Vigil (william.vigil@wfp.org)
Initial information is based on the Government request of 18 April to assist
518,000 of the most affected persons in the two worst hit provinces. The
estimated cost of meeting the Government request is approximately US$
60 million. In reality total needs are likely to be significantly higher given
that the previous figure does not include earthquake related food-insecure
people in the other four affected provinces. At this time the sector seeks
to assist 260,000 persons for 1.5 months for an estimated value of $16
million; however, these figures may change following further assessments.
$16 million
began reaching the first 40,000 food-insecure persons.
Priority Actions
• Coordinate a distribution plan with the Government, based on Government and international resources.
• Distribute high-energy biscuits to 16,500 people.
• Provide emergency food assistance to earthquake victims in hospitals as per request of the Ministry of Health.
• Provide emergency food assistance to 260,000 targeted people with a possible further scale up to 518,000
people.
Health
Contact information: Gina Tambini (tambinig@paho.org)
Based on initial information from the Government, approximately 518,000 people in Esmeraldas and Manabí
provinces urgently need emergency care and prevention, surveillance,
diagnosis and treatment of diseases associated with effects of the natural
disaster. The health sector seeks to cover 21 per cent of these needs
with this Appeal, to assist approximately 110,000 people in the provinces
of Manabi and Esmeraldas.
The Ministry of Health has mobilized 17 mobile health units and medical
brigades to support emergency medical care in affected areas and rapid
response teams have deployed to develop public health interventions to
prevent outbreaks especially in areas where water and sanitation systems have collapsed.
$4.5 million
required to reach
110,000 people
Priority Actions
• Ensure rapid re-establishment of health services and emergency medical care capacity in the most affected areas.
• Improve epidemiological surveillance and prevention of health risks control in affected areas.
• Improve good health practices to prevent disease outbreaks in shelters and communities.
• Ensure mental health and psychosocial assistance to surviving populations in communities affected by the
