Food safety tips
TIP: Make sure your fridge
temperature stays between 0 and
5°C. A simple, cheap fridge
thermometer will do the trick. An
over-stuffed fridge will run warmer,
which makes food go off quicker.
TIP: Unlike the fridge, the freezer
works better when full. So make
the most of it, but keep using
up what’s in there.
TIP: Leftover rice can be
refrigerated for one day, while other
starchy, cooked foods can stay in the
fridge for a couple of days.
TIP: Make sure to defrost meat in
the fridge overnight rather than on
the counter, to reduce the risk of
harmful bacteria.
And finally
TIPS:
• If you have ambient (in other words
not perishable) food that you can’t
finish, consider donating it to
neighbours through a food-sharing
online network. Free resource sharing
sites like Freegle or Freecycle are
often used to offer up surplus food
from people’s home.
• If you have a glut of produce in your
garden or allotment, consider
donating it to a local food poverty
project. See www.bhfood.org.uk/
donating-food for more info.
• When eating out, remember to ask
about portion sizes or add-ons not
listed on the menu, to avoid having
more than you can finish.
• Ask to take leftover food home with
you. Leftover chips make a wonderful
hash for breakfast. Just chop finely,
fry with onions and red peppers and
serve alongside eggs.
