Studying the abstracts that are submitted
to SIWI for World Water Week events is a
quick way to see where the water discussion
is headed. It offers very interesting reading.
The clear winner this year is implementation
of the 17 Sustainable Development
Goals, with a focus on indicators and monitoring.
From SIWI’s side, we will dedicate part of this year’s World
Water Week to taking stock of water in the Agenda 2030 as
well as in the Paris climate agreement. Although we are still
early in the implementation process, we hope to establish a
platform from where we can follow water in the global goals,
inspire delegates to take action, and ensure that water is part
of the solutions moving forward. We are bringing together
some of the key actors within these processes, and we look
forward to some high-quality brainstorming.
Financing for development is another topic that grows each
year, if we use World Water Week abstracts as a measuring
tool. Since proper financing is a prerequisite for any sort of
implementation of the global goals, it is a subject we hope to
see discussed in-depth during the Week.
Other topics receiving a lot of attention are transboundary
aquifers, natural infrastructure, as well as nutrition, irrigation
and drought.
Our theme for the Week, Water for Sustainable Growth, will
be a common denominator for all our talks.
As you can see, we are planning for an exciting World Water
Week this year! In these pages, you can browse the programme
and start planning your Week.
Between 28 August and 2 September, Stockholm is the place
The World Water Week offers eight scientific seminars with
content in direct connection with the thematic scope of
the Week. The seminar programmes are put together by
the Scientific Programme Committee and Co-convenors,
using abstracts submitted for the Week and invited keynote
speakers. For 2016 the eight themes will be:
• Water as a driver for sustainable growth
• Water security in a changing world: Coping with
threats
• Water and job opportunities: A critical nexus for
growth
• Ecosystem degradation and livelihoods: moving from
vicious to virtuous cycles
• Water for sustainable and inclusive cities: How to
induce change?
• Water stewardship: A driver for business growth
• Financing water infrastructure for sustainable growth
• Good water governance for inclusive growth and
poverty reduction
In 2016, World Water Week
will again feature the SIWI
Sofa. Take the opportunity
to create your own SIWI
Sofa segment – in film or as
a podcast.
The Sofa is a cross between
a speakers’ corner and an
interview studio. Experts,
decision-makers and leaders
will be interviewed live on a variety of water-related issues.
Sofa segments will be promoted in the programme,
recorded (video or podcast) and shared through various
online channels during and after the Week.
“I have always been motivated by the principles of public health, how to
prevent disease. A key barrier, our water infrastructure, is crumbling or
non-existing in many parts of the world. The global population unserved
by sewage treatment is counted in the billions.”
