located just south of the harley davidson museum along the milwaukee river, the
urban cemetery project manages to find refuge from the noise and distractions
of the busy city through creative terrain transformation and architectural form.
because of the delicate subject matter involved, the need for careful evaluation of
form and architectural psychology was a must. i decided to explore metaphysical
concepts of life and death and the symbolic contrast of materials, like black
marble and brushed stainless steel, with the very natural and undisturbed
landscape. i also attempted to further this contrast by having these contrasting
forms appear as they are floating in unnatural cuts in the landscape. this
simultaneous sense of connection and disconnect is representative of the world
of the living and that of the deceased; allowing visitors to feel a bond with
those they may have lost and serving as a catalyst for reflection and thought.
located on the far west end of brady street in
milwaukee’s lower east side, the brady street public
brady street
level/entrance
marketplace was designed to be the western hub to the
eclectic business improvement district. the site is situated
at a crucial crossroad between four of the neighborhood’s
most important streets: brady, van buren, pearson, and
water. this intersection not only brings four roads together,
but serves as the division between neighborhoods, demographics,
and use. this juncture not only makes the location the perfect
place for such a versatile community building, it would serve as
a juncture between different thoughts, heritage, ideologies, and
values; factors that were at the forefront of the design
process. i decided that the building needed to serve two
functions, that of a public market, and that of a public
space and gateway between the currently insulated pearson
and north water street, to the busy and energetic brady
street. because of the vast differences between the uses
and users of these different locations, this connection needed
to carefully transitioned, and from this need came my design.
located in the northeast corner of the university of wisconsin-milwaukee’s campus,
the treetop dormitory seeks to give students that value a more quiet and serene
living space a place to call their own. given that the site of the building is a
part of the much underutilized downer woods, one of the goals i had for this
project was to make sure the design incorporated this space. both of these
goals were met through the use of a strategic building plan that creates safe
and welcoming outdoor spaces that seamlessly merge with the downer woods.
Through the use of a north facing courtyard, large cuts in the building’s mass,
and an occupiable screen system that mimics downer wood’s canopy, the built
form manages to create an artificial extension of the neighboring trees cover.
the result of the project is a safer and more welcoming downer woods and
a dormitory that will allow nature lovers to utilized the space year round.

of this design, the components can be used in a variety of bond patterns to allow for a great deal of design flexibility and creativity in its uses.
for our design and mock-up, we decided to use a stacked bond in order for our screen wall to appear as if it was comprised of floating bricks. the
rest of the building used a stacked bond with dark mortar and raked joints to continue to play with this design illusion. this bond worked well with
the contemporary design of the building, complementing the linear geometry of the project and allowing for uninterrupted NODE ASSEMBLY slits NODE ASSEMBLY of light to penetrate
the screen system. this design strategy also creates a perspectile distortion of the light being perceived by its viewers due to the nature of how light
