Surviving
There’s an American term, the “winter
blues” that defines how many people who
live in countries that experience bitter,
snowy winters feel during the winter season.
People are said to experience mild depression
and lack of energy and physicians have labeled
it “Severe Affective Disorder – S.A.D.”. In
Korea, winter lasts around four months and it
gets very chilly - it’s ushered in at the end of
November by a calm, chilly wind commanding
all to adorn heavy outer wear to combat the
dropping temperature
Fortunately, you can survive a Korean winter.
Here are some ideas:
1. Dress Appropriately:
I remember my first winter in Korea. I felt
prepared to face it – after all, before moving here
I had been warned about the cold temperatures
and therefore made sure I packed my two
warmest jackets with me - but surprisingly
they were no match for the temperature.
Recommendations: “Uniqlo” heatech under
garments, woolen hats (75% heat loss through
our heads), lined stockings (Dongdaemun)
2. Fall in love or Stay in love
Ever heard about the “chemistry” of love?
It could be an odd statement but it’s not,
since science proves that falling in love and
fanning the flames of love produce “feel good”
chemicals (amphetamines) in our bodies. So,
this Christmas; be proactive and romance your
partner. Buy her some fresh roses, take him out
to his favourite restaurant, plant a surprising
kiss when they’re least expecting it and Merry
Christmas to you!
3. Relax!
Spend time with people you really like. Take
time off from your busy schedule and give
your cell phone a break. Don’t spend the entire
month shopping and spending money; this can
leave you more depressed.
4. Avoid Binge Drinking
Binge drinking is having a minimum of 5
alcoholic drinks at a time. A warm glass of wine
or a sip of brandy may seem especially inviting
indoors when its chilly outdoors and pacing
yourself is the key to staying healthy. Exercise
caution because alcohol is a mood depressant
and can negatively affect moods
5. Give
It has been said that “giving is the highest form
of living”. We get “fuzzy” feelings inside when
we do good things for others. Sharing from the
heart without expectation of return is the true
meaning of Christmas. As a great ma once said
“give of your time, talent or treasure”
Nice & Affordable!
Clothes and shoes in Seoul?
Looking for your sizes and style?
Then go to Dongmyo Station Line
6 or 1 and exit gate 6. Find an
building adjacent to gate 6 on your
right. At the 7 and 8th floor shops,
you may get your favorites! Try
out... It’s popular with foreigners.
