Stress-corrosion cracking
• Stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) develops when the alloy is
exposed to simultaneous tensile stress in a corrosive environment,
i.e., water vapour (with trace halide iron)
• The failure stress is well below the level
of the yield strength.
• Electrochemistry between
metallurgical structures and
corrosive environment dominates
the SCC.
• Cu, Mg, Zn, Si and Li as solute
elements have the adverse effects.
Note: Should avoid stressing in
direction normal to the short
transverse direction (susceptible to
corrosion due to mechanical
fibering).
