TOOHEYS CUP 2016
PROGRAM - ROUND 8 4th - 5th JUNE 2016
WEEKLY PREVIEW
ROUND 8>>
By Matt Harris , CEO - Newcastle Rugby League
Last weekend again produced some great football with defending premiers Lakes United grabbing the
competition lead and the Newcastle Rebels storming into the Country Rugby League Championship Final.
In Tooheys Cup Round 7 action the Saturday matches ended in a narrow 22 – 18 win to Cessnock
over Kurri while the Pickers said goodbye to Maitland Sportsground by snatching a nail-bitting draw
with Central Newcastle with a last-minute try. Both games were see-sawing battles and highlighted the
closeness of this year’s competition. On Sunday Macquarie maintained their impressive form with strong
win over the South Newcastle Lions. Playing in front of a big home crowd the Scorpions set-up the win
with a barnstorming 1st half and now find themselves only one point behind the leaders.
The Round 7 Feature Match had Lakes United travelling to Harker Oval to do battle with front-runners and
competition favourites Western Suburbs. The lead changed hands on a number of occasions throughout
the match with the game in the balance until a late try to Lakes United sealed a 24 – 16 victory and
catapulted the Seagulls to the top of the Tooheys Cup leader board.
This weekend sees the Tooheys Cup competition enter into the half-way point of the 2016 season.
On Saturday Lakes United travel to Kurri Kurri minus their representative players for what is always a
challenging road trip. Kurri will be desperate for a win to keep within striking distance of the top five while
Lakes will be hoping to consolidate their position at the top of the competition ladder. Cessnock host a
Central Newcastle side who would be disappointed with their season to date and are desperate for a win.
The Goannas find themselves only two points off the front-runners and could jump into the top three with
a win. The third Saturday game pits Macquarie against Maitland at Peacock Field. The Scorpions are
undefeated since round 3 and look set to again challenge for the title in 2016.
The lone Sunday game has South Newcastle hosting Western Suburbs in the BarTV Round 8 Feature
Match (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au). Both sides are coming off two losses and will be keen to
head into next weekend’s bye round with a confidence bosting win. Both clubs, in particular Western
Suburbs, will be sweating on their representatives players backing up from the CRL Final on the Saturday.
Best of luck to coach Todd Edwards, his support team and the Newcastle Rebels squad who take on
Illawarra in the Country Rugby League Championship Final on Saturday in Wollongong. After another
strong performance in last weekend’s Semi-final we will be hoping to enact some revenge on our steel city
rivals who have pipped us at the post in our last two CRL final appearances. BarTV will be streaming the
game from 2pm and the link can be accessed via the Newcastle Rugby League website.
A MESSAGE OF SUPPORT TO DAMIAN JOBSON
The rugby league community came together over the weekend with numerous fundraising efforts
to support Damian. While Damian is in stable condition the costs associated with his injuries are
expected to run into millions of dollars.
A Go Fund Me campaign has been set up to help raise much needed funds to support Damian’s
ongoing rehabilitation fees: https://www.gofundme.com/25kau26s

NEWCASTLE REBELS SENIOR
COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
FINALS PREVIEW
Coach - Todd Edwards
After last weekend’s great win over
Canberra the Rebels now move
into the Final against Illawarra this
Saturday down at Wollongong.
Illawarra have won the past three
Country Championships but if we
can reproduce our defensive effort
from last Saturday I think we can
give it a big shake.
We are really looking forward to the
final this Saturday and hope to bring
the trophy back to Newcastle.
CENTRAL NEWCASTLE
CENTRAL NEWCASTLE, THE MIGHTY BUTCHER BOYS
The Butcher Boys felt honoured for our Club to be part of the last game of rugby league ever at
Maitland Sportsground, however, we were going there to spoil their party.
Our 19s got us off to a great start with a comprehensive 32 – 0 victory. I’m sure coach Gilbert would
have been extra pleased with his side’s defence, keeping the young Pickers scoreless.
As I predicted, Open Grade were back in the winner’s circle with a 22 to 14 victory over the
previously undefeated Pickers team. A great effort to all Junior involved Affiliates and a special mention to the old
boy, Shane Ryan, for a 2 try effort on his return.
After last week’s great effort our Reggies fell again by the way side. These guys have to remember
to keep putting in week in week out and with 9 games left in the season who knows what they
could achieve.
By the time First Grade ran out, the crowd had rolled in to witness the historic occasion. The
Pickers got off to a flyer with a couple of early tries, however, the Butcher Boys hit back to be only
2 behind at oranges. Clearly it was anyone’s game at this stage and the second 40 proved that,
because by the time the full time hooter sounded, not only on the game, but the last time it will be
heard on the ground, the sides couldn’t be split and had to make do with a point each.
Today we travel on our first trip to Cessnock in wine country and like all visitors who venture there
we want to leave happy and bring home the spoils.
My bold prediction for this week is for the Mighty Butcher to knock the Goeys off in all 4 grades at
their home ground.
The Goannas at the moment are proving to be the great escape artists of the competition
and at the same time putting their supporters through torture. We again got out of jail on
Saturday with a try in the last play of the match to defeat Kurri 22 to 18. This is the third
game of the season we have scored in the final 30 seconds to win the match, but as they
say in the classics, winners are grinners.
All four games on the day went right to the final whistle with the Bulldogs getting the
better of the luck in the three lower grade games. Had we lost the main game the
sledging from our neighbours would have been relentless. The win didn’t advance us
up the table at all but it gave us some very important breathing space from the teams
below us.
It was great to see both of our wingmen, Cal and Chris, have outstanding games and
show they have overcome the injuries that had troubled them early in the year. Young
fullback Brent Mendyk continues to grow in confidence, his taking of the high ball and
defence have really been top shelf.
This Saturday we play Central at home and the players are still smarting from their first
round loss so revenge will be a main motivator for this game. With all the lower grades
going down to Kurri it will be critical that they bounce back with a win so as to stay in
touch with the top sides as we approach the half way mark of the competition. This
week’s match day sponsors will be KFC Cessnock and Kirks Earthmoving, they are both
new sponsors this year and it is great to have them on board.
KURRI KURRI
One cannot undo what has passed, yet we must learn from the experience. As the saying goes
“There is no sense in crying over spilt milk”. Does that mean that the more mistakes we make,
the wiser we become? Oh only if!!. In what can only be described as heartbreaking by their
supporters the Kurri Bulldogs were defeated by the Cessnock Goannas in the last 10 seconds
of the match. 22-18 with the Bulldogs having led for most of the second half. We must now
take some positives from this match and learn from our mistakes showing the others what it
means to be a Bulldog The season is approaching halfway and only four points separate 1st
from 6th position, we are still in reach but must now increase the tempo.
Derby day at Kurri is always a crowd pleaser, the only drawback was the cool weather which
reduced the usually high numbers down from previous years. However the intensity of the
fixtures never diminished. Congratulations to the three lower grades on securing wins over
their opponents. Kurri U19s defeated Cessnock in a thriller 18-16 and are improving as the
season progresses. Best for the Bulldogs were Ethan Niszczot in the backs whilst Tom Payne
and Jordy Mitchell gave the team the forward momentum to secure the points.
Open Grade was another close affair with the Bulldogs securing fifth spot on the ladder. The
old stager in only his second game added to his game tally with another four pointer, makes
me wonder if he will be the highest try scorer in the open grade at season end; well done Mary.
Like First Grade only two points separate 1st from 6th place in Reserve grade with the Bulldogs
holding down 5th slot. So it was important to maintain the momentum when Kurri secured their
third victory on the day with a 22-16 win. I believe this team can only improve as the season
progresses and will be there when the finals fixture are played.
It is always good to come away with a weekend having won 3 from 4 games, but it
is even a greater achievement when you can do that at Harker Oval against Wests.
Our U/19s are setting a very high standard for the club with a comprehensive result
64-4, whilst Wests got the best of us in the Open Grade. Reserves punched out a
good win, with 1st grade now being unbeaten by Wests in our last 4 occasions.
This weekend we are up at Kurri and with the CRL Country Championship final the
coaching staff has decided to rest those Representative players. We want to wish
the side all the best against Illawarra on Saturday.
This weekend will show the real depth and talent the club has coming through with
some of our U/19’s getting a call up to the higher grades. A big congratulations must
go to Cal Guest who will be debuting in 1st grade on the wing. Cal has not put a foot
wrong in the lower grades and is well deserving of the promotion.
As we mentioned last week the club will be doing something to help the Windale club
raise money for the Jobson family and that will probably tie in with their fundraiser
they have coming up next month.
Tickets are still available for the Gulls and Gals ball and they can be purchased from
MAITLAND PICKERS
Well a few tears were shed not just because it was the end of an era of the current Sportsground
but legend and stalwart PJ Ellis announced his retirement. PJ has played at the Pickers since
2010 and was in recent years named in the Top 20 Legends of all time for the Club. An honour
which humbled him being named alongside so many great players.
PJ will be sorely missed by all players, Old Boys, Committee and spectators alike on the park,
although maybe not the opposition. Despite approaching his 40th birthday this year he still manages
to stop the opposition in their tracks. His defense is well respected in the Newcastle Rugby League
circle. We know we’ll still be seeing him around, but we would like to take this opportunity to say
thankyou to him for his passion, dedication, courage and commitment for the past 7 seasons.
Despite a great day at home footy didn’t really go to plan with 19s totally outplayed and Opens
suffering their first loss for the season. We will be looking to turn these results around this week
v Macquarie. Reggies played really well with a big win and in the main game it ended in a draw.
Thanks to all the Committee for a great well run day, to the Mod teams who played and finishing
with an awesome band. Thanks also to “4th Grade” who put on their own brand of entertainment
with a special sprint race on a very cold night!
SOUTH NEWCASTLE
The South Newcastle ‘Lions’ welcome the Western Suburbs ‘Rosellas’ to Townson Oval today
– both clubs lost their First Grade matches last weekend and no doubt each will be eager to
get back into the winning circle – this augers well for an exciting game of rugby league – enjoy!
Back to the drawing board for our 1st Grade team after consecutive losses.
It was an encouraging start, South led 6-0 after 12 minutes, but the team was deprived of any
quality ball for the rest of the half, due to a lop-sided penalty count and a series of dropped
passes. Macquarie made good use of this glut of Junior possession Affiliates and took charge of the game,
racing to a 32-6 at the break. South rallied in the second half, winning that session 10-6 but all
too late – the bird had flown.
Coach, Todd Hurrell has addressed our shortcomings this week as a lead up to this much
anticipated clash with West today.
The Reserve Grade trailed 8-16 in the first half but a well delivered rev-up at the break by coach,
David Van Buuren, saw the boys lift and easily get on top of the ‘Scorpions’ , winning 38-16.
The highlight of the game was the ‘man-of-the-match’ performance from U/19 player, Jackson
Myers who was promoted on the day and scored two tries. Congratulations.
Our heart goes out to Open Grade coach, Dewayne Sampson losing another close game on the
bell – better days are ahead. ______________________________________________
The Under 19’s continue to improve and won their second game in a row – 28-22. Well done –
coach Steve Young is smiling broadly.
