CINZIA GIANFIORI
SAS ITALY
ACADEMIC PROGRAM MANAGER
Copyr i g ht © 2012, SAS Ins titut e Inc . All rights res er ve d .
I joined SAS in April 1992 and in October 2008 I became Academic Program Manager for Italy. Starting from March 2016 I report to
Fabrizio Padua, Alliance, Channels and Academic CEE Regional Director.
My main goals and activities in these eight years were:
• Increase the number of professors and students with SAS knowledge
• Improve the relationships between SAS, Universities and SAS Customers\prospects.
• Manage SAS renewals (and some new sales) for Teaching and Research within the University.
• Organize and coordinate academic events:
• SAS Campus (Italian Universities, Research and Business meet to share new ideas),
• University Challenge SAS
• SAS Excellence Day
My main successes during the last years were:
• Improve the relationship with professors who are using SAS in their courses and Masters creating a SAS path course to help
their students to achieve SAS certification. Students who have passed the SAS Certification examination can decide whether to
appear on the web page in which the names of all the students who have obtained a SAS certification are listed.
• Connect students and recent graduates who are looking for internship or a job, with SAS Partners and SAS Customers who are
looking for young Data Scientists.
• SAS Job Speed dating as an integral part of SAS Academic event: SAS Campus, SAS university excellence, SAS Data scientist
2 items I need to be successful:
to about what other schools have done successfully.
applied for what programs, what professors are teaching, who had attend what SAS events, who has used what resources, who are SAS
authors etc. This would really help us know what is happening at each school where that information is not aggregated together in place
today.
SALES OPERATIONS, CLIENT & BID MANAGEMENT
11 years, almost, at SAS, before that 17 years at Oracle. I used to be an Account Manager (2 Oracle)
and later Sales Manager for the Public Sector. The past 4 years I have switched to Customer Care,
Sales Operations & BidOffice as well as the Academic Program. A full plate!
Two top item:
1. Resources and Budget:
• It’s just impossible to do a good job practically by yourself. I have a student 1 day of the
week to help me with the logistics and our Education Manager is involved with the
teacher/professor program (also her excellent trainers) but she’s focusses understandably
on her commercial commissionplan. The same goes for pre/post-sales support.
• I need to finance a lot of activities to get visibility. Every year it has to be allotted thru other
departments (MKT for instance) cumbersome process.
1. Software:
• Availability of VA/VS or comparable dashboard capabilities for students. They now work with
Tableau and seem very happy with it…
• Strange effect, for students to do their exams with SODA they need a WIFI-connection to
the server. They are not allowed to use WIFI during the exams…
• Distribution process of SAS Academic Suite is tough. No more DVD’s. We are devising a
way to almost automatically install the software from a central Depot at our Academicspartner.
• More and more students bring their own device. MAC is really popular. What can we offer
here?
MARY RIOS
SAS CARY, NC
DIRECTOR, GLOBAL OPERATIONS
Copyr i g ht © 2012, SAS Ins titut e Inc . All rights res er ve d .
Mary Rios joined SAS in August of 1999, becoming a member of the Publications Division, where she worked as an
Editor for the “Books by Users” program. Her prior SAS career saw her in a role of Technical Writer in support of the
Federal Government which prepared her for her SAS role. In 2000, Mary transferred to the Public Sector Division of
SAS where she began her work supporting the academia market in the US. At that time, in the US, there was not a
dedicated Education Practice, so Mary was charged with developing policies, guidelines and a pricing model exclusively
for the academia market. Around the 2004/2005 timeframe, a decision was made to have a dedicated Education
Practice, which became a separate entity from the Public Sector division. Mary was asked to continue in her support
role for licensing, pricing and she was also asked to manage the sales processing efforts for the Practice and to
develop a CRM team to provide the type of care needed for the existing customer base. Mary continued to manage
these teams, however in 2008, the pricing piece and the sales processing piece were moved to the US Pricing Team
and the US Sales Processing teams, since the pricing had become stable for the academia market. In 2015, Mary was
asked to add the support of our globalization efforts to her umbrella and is one of her focuses today.
