PREMUS 2016 includes<br />

over 360 oral presentations<br />

delivered in 31 symposia<br />

and 64 sessions, as well as<br />

over 60 poster presentations.<br />

Each symposium includes<br />

presentations that address<br />

a particular question or<br />

issue involving work-related<br />

musculoskeletal disorders<br />

(MSDs). The oral and poster<br />

presentations are grouped<br />

into one of eight themes, as<br />

follows.<br />

1: Emerging issues in the<br />

prevention and management of<br />

work-related MSDs<br />

Research is constantly bringing to<br />

light new problems, challenges and<br />

solutions in the world of work-related<br />

musculoskeletal disorders. The presentations<br />

in this theme talk about these<br />

emerging issues, whether they address<br />

new assessment methods, new<br />

prevention practices or new research<br />

challenges.<br />

2: Field evaluations of MSD<br />

prevention policies, programs and<br />

practices<br />

These presentations look at the process<br />

and impact of implementing MSD<br />

prevention policies, programs and<br />

practices in the “real world”in specific<br />

types of workplaces and among certain<br />

occupational groups. For example,<br />

the studies look at interventions in<br />

workplaces ranging from hospitals<br />

and manufacturing facilities to offices<br />

and construction sites. They look at<br />

interventions for occupations ranging<br />

from daycare workers and bakers to<br />

truck drivers and dockworkers.<br />

3: Biology of work-related MSDs<br />

Presentations under this theme look<br />

at MSDs from a biological and medical<br />

point of view. They deal with the workings<br />

of muscles, joints and nerves, and<br />

how they are affected by the way work<br />

is done. They look at subjects such as<br />

MSD biomarkers, treatment protocols,<br />

disc degeneration, pain and more.<br />

4: Measuring exposures in a new<br />

world of work<br />

Determining what tools and measures<br />

to use, and how to use them, to assess<br />

the impact of work on musculoskeletal<br />

systems is the subject of presentations<br />

under this theme. They look at measuring<br />

a wide range of MSD-related<br />

issues: from assessing the physical and<br />

mental symptoms of musculoskeletal<br />

injuries to quantifying the degree of<br />

exposure to job hazards such as whole<br />

body vibration and physical workloads.
