Newport Navy Band Northeast to Play Saturday, <strong>July</strong> 30<br />

Medway will keep up the tradition<br />
of hosting a summertime military<br />
band concert yet again this<br />
year, when the Medway Lions,<br />
in conjunction with the Thayer<br />
House Committee, host the Newport<br />
Navy Band Northeast on the<br />
lawn of the Thayer House on Saturday,<br />
<strong>July</strong> 30, at 7 p.m.<br />
“For at least 10 years, we’ve<br />
had military bands in Medway,”<br />
says Col. (RET) Michael Matondi,<br />
who has helped arrange<br />
the concerts all these years. “It’s<br />
one of the big events of the year,<br />
where a large population turns<br />
out from surrounding towns and<br />
everything. The attendance is usually<br />
there at the 2,000 mark.”<br />
According to its website, the<br />
Navy Band Northeast, established<br />
in 1974, is based on board<br />
NAVSTA Newport and is one of<br />
11 official U.S. Navy bands worldwide,<br />
providing musical support<br />
for military ceremonies, recruiting,<br />
morale and retention programs,<br />
and community relations.<br />
Under the direction of Lieutenant<br />
Gregory Fritz, this group of 35<br />
professional Navy musicians supports<br />
more than 300 engagements<br />
annually throughout an 11-state<br />
area of responsibility, performing<br />
regularly for high-ranking military<br />
and civilian dignitaries, Navy<br />
Recruiting, public outreach and<br />
awareness efforts, and partnership<br />
in education programs throughout<br />
the Northeast United States.<br />
