Welcome to the Amsterdam 2016 European Athletics Championships
T
he European Athletics Championships is the most exciting event in our competition programme, when new and
established stars of our sport have the opportunity to shine on the continental stage. It is when our sport reaches its
largest audience, with television coverage in almost all European countries and outside Europe as well.
The first edition of the championships was held in Torino, Italy, in 1934 and now 82 years later, the 23 rd edition takes
place for the first time in the Netherlands with Amsterdam as host.
This manual provides an excellent overview of performances at the European Athletics Championships and the
evolution of our sport in Europe. The championships have always been the arena for the highest level of performance.
As well as the results from all previous European Athletics Championships, European records and best lists, this
statistical manual also includes an analysis of the performances of all European Athletics member countries at the
championships and medal winners.
We are grateful to the team of statisticians who have compiled all the data and checked its accuracy and to the
Amsterdam 2016 Organising Committee who have produced this manual.
I hope you will find this statistical manual an interesting and useful publication and I am sure that the European Athletics
Championships in Amsterdam will provide many memorable performances to be added to future publications.
Svein Arne Hansen
President, European Athletics
