O
I took some much needed vacation time to restore myself. I was
working so much and so hard that I knew the importance of taking
the time off, but I also knew how taking this time away could affect
the progress I was making. I had already paid for everything and
wasn’t even packed until 3 days before I was scheduled to leave. My
natural man as well as my spiritual man was telling me I needed this
break away from it all to reconnect with my family, myself and my
creativity. While on vacation I learned, adventured and discovered
some things about myself. I also gained an appreciation for how
important it is to take care of yourself.
If you ever get a chance to travel to Hawaii, you’ll learn this place is
beyond beautiful. It has some of the most tropical scenery that will
take your breath away. I recalled before we exited the plane, each of
the passengers are required to review this agreement from front to
back. It basically was informing each of us the do’s, don’ts and
penalties of the island before we entered the lavish paradise. For
example: NO seeds, No Pets of certain types, NO fruit without
permission, etc. This struck me as kind of odd, but after I ventured
out on tours and discovered the reason this place was so awesome, it
made sense. The islanders want to keep this place healthy, fresh and
natural. They understood the risk and damages of bringing outside
influences into their environment.
What influences you have allowed in your life environment? How
do they affect your growth and promising future?
Sound & Gospel
Written by Aaron Thomas
Travis Greene
I recall about a year ago I heard
Travis’s music and I added him to my
music playlist. His name wasn’t as
well known to me at the time, but I
did enjoy his sound and music. Many
people have come to recognize this
Gospel artist by his hit song
“Intentional,” a powerful anthem that
many churches, radio stations and TV
programs have played. The song
encourages us that God is present and
His work in each of our lives is
intentional. Travis’s song “Made A
Way” also touched home, inspired by
when he and his wife were expecting
their son and the favor of God showed
up when things seemed bleak. At this
year’s Stellar Awards, Travis also
preformed and was a nominee. This
artist seems to be on his way to a long
career in gospel music and we have
yet to see what God has in store. To
check out more about this artist, go to
Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
Spit It
Written by Brittiny D. Morehead
Voices, thoughts, and opinions all shape what we decide to embrace as
humans. Although we form our own viewpoints towards situations, we still are
subject to fall in the path of opposition. In most cases, we’ll be firm about what
we believe to be right or wrong until someone who feels the exact opposite
comes along to open up our minds to viewing it differently. Some of us are
manipulated because we fall under the influence of how someone told us to
contour our mind frames. Now aside from using that voice to alter someone for
the worst, imagine planting those mental seeds for the better. We have activists,
advocates, and motivational speakers traveling all around the world to leave an
imprint within us. They want us to fight for something, stand for something,
and to believe in something so that we can be somebody! Words are powerful
and so are our influences, so we have to watch what we say and how we say it.
There’s always someone waiting to feed off of what we tend to believe. I use
my poetry and my life experiences to be a powerful influence. I use my pain to
be a powerful influence because it truly does help other people cope with the
same types of afflictions. Before I started writing for this magazine or
performing at BYD events, I felt so inadequate because of my position in life
and how I viewed the hardships that I encountered. But there was a powerful
influence that let me know my circumstances do not define me and that GOD
loves me regardless, so just bring my A game and remain appropriate for the
targeted audience. The CEO (Aaron Thomas) did not have to accept me because
my style was so far from what he believed in, but instead of rejecting me, he
used his powerful influence to mold me and teach me. He showed me how to
use my words without projecting such a harsh sound while still having the same
impact on so many people. His powerful influence made me feel accepted.
Style Life!
Confidence – Comfort & Attitude
Written by Aaron Thomas
When it comes to style, I have heard and seen a lot, and I’m ok with that. For me,
when I’m preparing to put my look or someone else’s look together, I like to get
the essence of the reason I am preparing the look. It has a soundtrack, believe it or
not. I often turn on music and head into the closet; I normally know what it is I
want to put on in my head before I start. When it come to styling myself, I know
my color wheel and what I like and don’t like on myself. I’m sure it’s the same for
everyone, BUT you should be willing to try new things, guys and gals. In today’s
dating market, you must be prepared for morning, noon and night attire. If you’re
single, you should be willing to be a little daring with your style -- not revealing,
but daring [side eye] LOL I’m not married, but I’m sure your spouse would like
you to keep the fashions coming and relevant so you guys can look and feel
connected as well. I like to keep my articles simple and short if you haven’t
noticed, so let’s jump right into it.
A month ago I had the pleasure to style Gospel recording artist Taushey Sais for
her Zine photography shoot. She mentioned the key things she wanted and what
she experienced in her past photo shoots. She wanted something fresh, new and
different. The client mentioned what she liked about my look and style and how I
was always on point from her point of view. As we continued to chat, I learned the
client had a busy schedule as a full time artist and mother, was on a budget and
had very little time to focus on her look, but was open to new ideas. After talking
for a few, we set up a date and time convenient for her to meet me at a few store
locations. We put our plan into action to meet her deadline photo date. After
hitting a few stores, we enjoyed conversation and found clothing she felt
comfortable in and deemed representative of her and her brand. Wrapping things
up, the client was very pleased with her looks, time taken and professionalism she
received to achieve her goals. I placed a few tips below for those of you wanting to
provide fashion consulting services. Till next time!
Key:
• Listen to the client and ask questions so you can be on the same page.
• Your own look can draw others to you, so maintain a simple, fresh look
daily.
• Set up a plan and take action!
• Make sure you stay within the client’s budget. Ask if there’s room for
adjustment if needed.
• Have fun and let the shopping experience be timely, but effective.
Discovering Her
Your Influence Is Powerful
Written by Raven Miles Henderson
As women, we have a tendency to
disrespect, belittle, and keep one
another down instead of building one
another up. Yes, even Christian women
act in this non-Christian manner.
This behavior as a Christian woman is
totally unacceptable. Did you know
that your influence is powerful? How
often do you find yourself speaking
negatively about another person? If you
are a True Believer, what are you doing
to become a better woman of Christ?
We must be careful of the words that
come out of our mouths, especially if
we are professing Christ to be our Lord
and Savior because the world is
watching. As women of Christ, we
should be slow to speak. However,
when we speak, we should speak with
wisdom. I challenge you to write down
everything you speak negatively about
someone and also pray God remove
that viciousness from you. You never
know who is watching you that you are
unknowingly mentoring. Your
influence as a Christian woman is more
powerful than you know.
MIX
Music Mix It Up
IT UP
Written by Aaron Thomas
I was talking with a friend one afternoon. We discussed the concern he had about
gospel music and why he felt Christian artists of today needed to decide what type
of music they wanted to perform: R&B or Gospel. Agreeing to disagree, I did not
make a big issue out of his opinion, but I did not disregard it either. I too feel
Christian music has changed and the look of gospel music artists has become
more diverse over the past 15 to 20 years since I was a teenager. I believe music is
supposed to transcend and change for the generation it’s relating too, The Bible
says: They are not of the World, even as I am not of the world. John 17:16. Yes,
I agree that the look, sound and display of Christian music has changed, but
haven’t you and I changed the way we do things from when we were youth?
I believe we must be able to reach people and draw them near, not drive them
out. Keeping our core values and purpose for why we are doing the music is key.
We must be relevant, but we must be mindful of the methods used.
Point of View
Point of View: Won't He Do It?
Written by Raven Henderson
POINT
When God shows up and shows you who he really is, it is truly a mind-blowing
experience. He will take you to places you've never dreamed and surround you with
people you thought you didn't qualify to be around. I'll be transparent and tell you what
God recently did for me. I was recently asked to sit on a panel for an organization of local
ministers that wanted to know how they can be of service to people that have been
released from prison. I assumed this would be an informal community event. When I
was seated on the panel and introduced myself to those I was sitting next to that I realized
what was going on. I immediately got nervous and started to sweat bullets. At this point I
began to pray and use my program as a fan. They must have noticed because someone
turned on the air conditioner. I was sitting between one of the directors and one of the
chair persons that work for the same agency I work for. Also commissioners, lawyers and
judges shared this same panel.
OF
You see the seat in which I sat should have been for the
assistant regional director or regional director. I am a unit supervisor. Needless to say I
no longer felt qualified to be at the event not to mention sit on the panel with all of this
experience and qualification. But God. I began to pray. While praying, HE sent instant
peace and immediately calmed my nerves. Even though I didn't have the qualifications
they had, I was thankful for the qualifications I do have and the ones I will obtain in the
future. I to will hold one of those positions once I complete the necessary requirements. I
didn't wait to thank God for showing up. I thanked him right then and there and continued
to thank HIM even after the event. It might not be a big deal to you, but it was huge for
arrived and was handed a program, and wasn't paying much attention. It wasn't until I
me. When God shows up and shows you who he really is, it is truly a mind-blowing
experience. Won't he do it? Yes he will!
Man Cave
Get In The Game!
Written By Chester McGowan Jr.
Coming up as an athlete, I was always around sports. At the track meets, football games,
and basketball games, I was trying to get in the game. If the one who had next ups knew
everyone, sometimes he would pick who he knew could play. Because the right choice
can keep you playing for awhile. Those who didn't get chosen would sometimes look
disappointed or wait between games to show off their skills so that they might get a
chance to play. When they got in the game, no one would throw them the ball.
But when you know that you're not that good, you have to practice. And the more you
practice, the better you will become. In this game called life, too many men are waiting
on it to happen instead of getting ready for when it happens. You have to start now
preparing for your future. Don’t wait until it’s time to move to start packing.
You start getting ready now because you know some of the things you have with you
now won’t look right in your new place. So you pack what you need and what you don’t
need, you get rid of. Go through your house (your soul) and decide what you cannot take
with you where you’re going, and get rid of it. Then start practicing on being a better
you. A better father, a better son, a better brother, and a better Christian.
When you start making yourself a better man, the world will be better off because now
you can duplicate yourself in others who are looking for a real man to pick them so they
can get in the game and win.
You have been chosen to be the example. Find the boys and young men that the world
has given up on. Nobody will choose them. You choose them and make them better
because you’ve practiced and gotten better and now you can make someone else better.
18 & Up
Written by Vanessa Price
Hey there my friends! Do you realize how important you are? Yes, you! You
have the power to influence anyone that comes within your zone. How, you ask?
Because YOU are YOUR Natural you, and no one can change who you are. Your
originality was whipped up just for you from the day you were born. And now
that you have reached the blossoming age of 18 and above, you get to share your
beauty, handsomeness, and character with those around you.
So how about starting with an afro, or say, a set of afro puffs? But wait! Don't
leave out the Mohawk, or the “twist out.” What’s that? You don’t have to have a
string of hair!! But of course, I'm sure you have your own style. You've had that
since the day you shaved your eyebrows off, creating your own “new trend” at the
age of 5. Remember when your mother came in the bathroom looking for you,
only to find your eyebrows gone? Oh yes, I'm sure you created many styles back
then. I can even remember twist outs before they ever came out. It was the day I
watched a girl get her neatly platted braid get cut off by this mischievous little boy
only to find a natural beauty as her braid slowly untwisted. She then shook her
head causing the natural curls that we all have, to sling around her beautiful face.
We all by nature are beautiful creatures, and you, my friend, are at the beginning
of a new life. You have the power to be in charge of your own beautiful, natural,
influential, self.
And guess what? You'd be surprised at how many people would follow you if
you'd stop following them. Make a U-Turn today. Do what you do! But do it with
a good and grateful heart. Wear your reds, wear your greens, find your biggest
earrings, or just call it “Bare face Monday.” When you're yourself, others around
you find serenity in you. So just watch how much things will change in you and
others when you let yourself be your natural you

TURN UP!
Written by Chester McGowan Jr.
In our culture, the urban culture, this phrase “turn up” is used to express what is
about to happen. Our younger generation uses it to say we're about to get buck
wild. My generation would use the term krunk. And those that are older would call
it a flounce, or just a party.
They all spoke of what was about to happen and how they would be a part of the
throw down. In other words, we are about to go higher. The only problem with that
is after a while of turn up, you have to turn down. After a while of being krunk, the
motor will run out of gas. After a while of flouncing and partying, the party will stop.
The reason why is because it’s controlled by your inner being called the flesh.
You don't have to train your flesh to get turned up; it's waiting for space and
opportunity. All it needs to hear is, there’s a party over here. As we begin to turn up
and turn down, our body is being tore up from the floor up. We call it the street
life. Some of us have escaped it and didn't end up where the street life can
sometimes takes you.
There's another being in you that wants its time to turn up. The difference is it wants
to turn you down so you can go up. You might think you're living because of what
you drive, the money in your pocket, or the women or men you have on your
side. That is not what defines you. When I was a child, I understood as a child, I
thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. There
should come a time in your life where you begin to clean house. When you
mature in life, you start to focus on where you’re going and start getting prepared.
Not by what you say, but by what you do.
You have turned up most of your life. Now it’s time to turn down so you can turn
up. In order to gain your life, you must be willing to lose your life.
Black History Facts
She is Ella Baker.
Many Blessings,
RLH
She is an unsung hero that contributed much to this
country's Civil Rights Movement. A member of the
NAACP, the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference, and a host of other organizations, this
woman left a profound impact in her community and
inspired others to continue the fight for equal rights.
She also challenged school policies that were unfair to
black students at Shaw University in Raleigh, North
Carolina where she attended. Because of the brilliance
and bravery she displayed, the Ella Baker Center for
human rights has been named after this historical icon.
