Teaching Awards
Congratulations to the winners of the
2016 VC Teaching Awards from the
Faculty of Medicine:
Dr Christopher Torrens: recognising
Chris’s wide ranging commitments to
education in the Faculty over many years
and in particular his huge achievements in
leading and delivering physiology teaching.
Dr Susan Wilson: recognising Susan’s
commitment to leading the undergraduate
projects in the Faculty for many years and
in particular the tremendous achievement
of delivering double the normal number of
undergraduate projects in one year due to
the changing BM curriculum.
Very well done!
New BM leadership
Director of Programmes
I am delighted to take on the role of Director of Undergraduate (BM) Programmes with
oversight of the quality of all the BM Programmes, in addition to retaining my role as
BM4 Programme Leader.
There is much work to be done to continue delivering excellent education whilst implementing
and evaluating our new BM curricula within an ever changing and challenging environment.
We have a really strong BM leadership team (with several new members) with a wide range
of experiences and skills, all of whom are really committed to providing an excellent student
learning experience. I am thrilled to have such a great team to be working with. We also have a
well-established culture of working with our students really closely to help guide our decision
making and I think that it is crucial that we continue this into the future.
Year 3 Leads
SUSU Academic
Awards
The Student Union’s Academic Awards
celebrate and reward the work of
teaching staff and student Academic
Representatives across the university.
The Excellence in Teaching Awards
are voted for by students, to recognise
lecturers and teaching staff who have
made a real impact on their academic
experience. This year, the winners from
the Faculty of Medicine were:
Best PG/UG Demonstrator or
Teaching Assistant - Will Parton
(Highly commended Michael Ahn)
(see page 6)
Most Engaging Lecturer - Carlos Hoyos
(Highly commended - Judith Holloway)
Best Academic Support - Shelley Parr
(Highly commended - Sally Curtis)
Best Pastoral Support - Sally Curtis
(Highly commended - Catherine Hill)
The Course Rep Awards celebrate the hard
work of the student Academic Reps over
the year and the positive impact they have
had on student experience. The Faculty
of Medicine winners were Alexander
Kyriakou-Haniche and Fiona Vincent.
We are both delighted to join the team as the Year 3 Leads at this important time, with
the new clinical curriculum and students doing clinical placements in Germany for the
first time.
The new curriculum provides some exciting, novel components to the BM Programmes.
In particular, the SCRIPT modules offer an excellent opportunity for students to increase
their confidence in prescribing knowledge and skills - an important part of their future
role as a junior doctor. The Primary Care and Long Term Conditions module and the new
BM(IT) introductory module have been very well received, as has the earlier introduction of
Orthopaedics to the curriculum.
The challenge for the next couple of years is to embed the new curriculum and iron out any
unexpected glitches as, and if, they arise. We intend to do this by building on links already
made with students to ensure their feedback is listened to. We have already had some “You
said, we did” actions. Next year, we plan to have a session at the beginning of September to
introduce the year ahead, including clinical placements and “How to apply for the MMedSc”.
We want our students to graduate ready to transition easily into their role as a junior doctor
and, with this in mind, the student representatives organised a very good session with Dr
Masding from Health Education Wessex to talk about Foundation jobs. In addition, Dr June
Abay, the Year 5 Lead, is keen to introduce preparation for the Situational Judgment Test
from Year 3. Year 3 is the foundation for clinical work - please feel free to contact us with your
thoughts and suggestions.
