Chris’s wide ranging commitments to<br />

education in the Faculty over many years<br />

and in particular his huge achievements in<br />

leading and delivering physiology teaching.<br />

Dr Susan Wilson: recognising Susan’s<br />

commitment to leading the undergraduate<br />

projects in the Faculty for many years and<br />

in particular the tremendous achievement<br />

of delivering double the normal number of<br />

undergraduate projects in one year due to<br />

the changing BM curriculum.<br />

Director of Programmes<br />

I am delighted to take on the role of Director of Undergraduate (BM) Programmes with<br />

oversight of the quality of all the BM Programmes, in addition to retaining my role as<br />

BM4 Programme Leader.<br />

There is much work to be done to continue delivering excellent education whilst implementing<br />

and evaluating our new BM curricula within an ever changing and challenging environment.<br />

We have a really strong BM leadership team (with several new members) with a wide range<br />

of experiences and skills, all of whom are really committed to providing an excellent student<br />

learning experience. I am thrilled to have such a great team to be working with. We also have a<br />

well-established culture of working with our students really closely to help guide our decision<br />

making and I think that it is crucial that we continue this into the future.<br />

are voted for by students, to recognise<br />

lecturers and teaching staff who have<br />

made a real impact on their academic<br />

experience. This year, the winners from<br />

the Faculty of Medicine were:<br />

The Course Rep Awards celebrate the hard<br />

work of the student Academic Reps over<br />

the year and the positive impact they have<br />

had on student experience. The Faculty<br />

of Medicine winners were Alexander<br />

Kyriakou-Haniche and Fiona Vincent.<br />

We are both delighted to join the team as the Year 3 Leads at this important time, with<br />

the new clinical curriculum and students doing clinical placements in Germany for the<br />

first time.<br />

The new curriculum provides some exciting, novel components to the BM Programmes.<br />

In particular, the SCRIPT modules offer an excellent opportunity for students to increase<br />

their confidence in prescribing knowledge and skills - an important part of their future<br />

role as a junior doctor. The Primary Care and Long Term Conditions module and the new<br />

BM(IT) introductory module have been very well received, as has the earlier introduction of<br />

Orthopaedics to the curriculum.<br />

The challenge for the next couple of years is to embed the new curriculum and iron out any<br />

unexpected glitches as, and if, they arise. We intend to do this by building on links already<br />

made with students to ensure their feedback is listened to. We have already had some “You<br />

said, we did” actions. Next year, we plan to have a session at the beginning of September to<br />

introduce the year ahead, including clinical placements and “How to apply for the MMedSc”.<br />

We want our students to graduate ready to transition easily into their role as a junior doctor<br />

and, with this in mind, the student representatives organised a very good session with Dr<br />

Masding from Health Education Wessex to talk about Foundation jobs. In addition, Dr June<br />

Abay, the Year 5 Lead, is keen to introduce preparation for the Situational Judgment Test<br />

from Year 3. Year 3 is the foundation for clinical work - please feel free to contact us with your<br />

thoughts and suggestions.<br />
