Patagonia: A Perfect Combination
Patagonia
Patagonia is a nature lover’s
paradise shared by Chile and
Argentina at the southern tip
of the Americas. This is a
region of stunning scenery:
beautiful mountains, massive
glaciers, turquoise lakes, and
abundant wildlife.
The highlight of Chilean
Patagonia is Torres del Paine
National Park, a wonderland
of jagged peaks, lakes, rivers,
ice-blue glaciers and unusual
wildlife. Your base for exploring
this region is the provincial
capital of Puerto Natales.
Crossing over the Andes to
the Argentine side brings you
to the small town of El Calafate
in Argentina, the gateway to
Los Glacieres National Park,
home of the spectacular Perito
Moreno Glacier. The glacier is
19 miles long and 3 miles wide
at its face with an average
height of 240 feet above the
surface of Lago Argentino. It is
one of only three Patagonian
glaciers that is growing.
Planning tips for Patagonia:
Climate: Torres del Paine National Park is open year-round. Peak season is Oct.-Apr. when
temperatures near 65°F. The busiest months are from Dec.-Feb. Peak season typically has very
strong winds, causing rapid weather changes. Although slightly colder, Aug.-Sep. can be a
great time to visit for less wind, fewer people, and off-peak pricing.
Geography & Transportation: Punta Arenas is the gateway airport to this region. Most
travelers continue straight to Puerto Natales or Torres del Paine upon arrival. Buses from Punta
Arenas to Puerto Natales or El Calafate are of high quality and a good value. Puerto Natales is
a quaint, affordable town, but requires extra time heading into the Park at the start and end of
each day. Some early return flights may require an extra night in Punta Arenas upon departure.
Chilean Patagonia can be connected with Argentine Patagonia by cruise from Punta Arenas to
Ushuaia or by car/bus through the Cerro Castillo border to El Calafate.
Programs: All-inclusive programs include transfers, meals, and daily tours, saving valuable
time, effort, and unexpected expenses.
Chile
Lake District: A Perfect Combination
Argentina
Straddling both sides of the Andes, the Lake District of Chile and Argentina is home to some of the
most spectacular scenery in either country. Forests, volcanoes, and glacier-fed lakes offer a wide
range of activities from hiking and fishing to sailing on cobalt blue lakes while sampling the excellent
wines produced by both countries. On both sides of the border, you can book excursions to walk on
glaciers, hike through dense forests, or climb portions of steep volcanoes.
Planning tips for the Lake District:
Climate: The Lake District will remind you of
Switzerland, with a similar climate although the seasons
are reversed. Spring and summer—November to April—
are the drier months but rain can come at any time. May
through October are colder months featuring more
precipitation including snow. September and October
often have pleasant weather.
Geography & Transportation: Travelers starting on the
Chilean side will most likely fly into Puerto Montt from
Santiago then have a half-hour transfer to Puerto Varas
where the Lake Crossing route begins. Travelers starting
on the Argentine side will fly from Buenos Aires to San
Carlos de Bariloche, the main city of the region. After
exploring this Alpine-looking town you will have the
choice to take the traditional lake crossing route which
consists of buses and ferry rides.
Chile
Altiplano: A Perfect Combination
Argentina
In addition to sharing indigenous and colonial heritage in the high desert through archaeologic sites
and attractive villages, Northern Chile and Argentina both offer dramatic desert scenery with towering
volcanoes, salt flats, and spectacular rock formations. The Atacama Desert in the north of Chile is the
most arid desert in the world and an important archaeological zone. On the Argentine side, Salta is one
of the most picturesque cities in the country. From there, visit other colonial villages as well as the curious
rock formations of the Cafayate River Gorge.
Planning tips for Northern Chile & Argentina:
Climate: San Pedro de Atacama is at 8,000 feet of elevation and the climate is
moderate. More than 90% of days will be sunny with occasional showers
January - March. Night skies will be cloudless with superb views of the stars.
At 4,000 feet of elevation, Salta has a pleasant four-season climate.
Geography & Transportation: Travelers starting on the Chilean side will fly from
Santiago to the airport in Calama and then have a two-hour ground transfer to San
Pedro de Atacama, your base for exploring the desert. Travel time from Atacama to
Salta in Argentina is about 10 1/2 hours by bus, but to simplify this journey we
recommend you do a private transfer with our local ground operator. Consider stopping
for a night at Purmamarca, about 2½ hours before Salta. The next day, you can take an
excursion to Humahuaca Gorge before continuing on to Salta. Flights from Salta to
