Honestly, I’ve been fortunate over the 

15 years that I’ve had a cell phone. 

I haven’t lost one, broken one or 

dumped one into a sink or toilet. 

But last week I was 

loaded down with a 

tote bag, an armload 

of wet towels, my 

phone and an empty 

drink cup as I stepped 

out of the boat onto 

our dock. I reached 

back in to grab another 

empty cup when I 

felt the phone slip out 

of my hand and hit the 

dock. 

Replaying that scene 

in slow motion, I watched the phone hit 

the dock, bounce and drop into the water 

next to our boat lift. It spiraled for the first 

18 inches until I couldn’t see it any longer. 

My husband sprang from the boat and 

without hesitating lowered himself into the 

chest-high waters. “Where did it go?” he 

asked. Following the direction of my pointing 

finger, he gingerly felt around with his 

toes and located it in less than 10 seconds. 

I couldn’t believe it. Cradling the phone 

as I dried it off, I felt as if a prized possession 

had been returned. I submerged the 

phone in a bag of rice overnight, as that’s 

what everyone said to do, but I was skeptical. 

The phone continued to ding reminders 

as text messages came in, yet I remained 

only guardedly optimistic. The next morning 

I removed the SIM card to check for 

water and that too was dry. 

Ten days later I’m feeling pretty confident. 

The only thing I’ve noticed at this point is 

that the finger-print scanner no longer rec-

A Pioneer kind of party 

Milford celebrates annual Pioneer Days

The annual Pioneer Days celebration 

is set for another fun 

summer weekend July 22-24 in 

Milford. 

Several area businesses are 

sponsoring a number of the 

great events throughout the 

weekend helping the Milford 

Commercial Club keep the 

costs minimal for those heading 

out to enjoy the activities. 

“We’ve been able to keep 

everything free or very low cost 

with the help of great sponsorships 

which is a tremendous 

help,” said Dawn Powell of the 

Milford Commercial Club. 

One of the few events that 

will cost a few bucks is the public 

tasting portion of the Pioneer 

Pitmasters BBQ Competition 

and it’s an event Powell is

“It’s the third annual one

“We changed the location to 

Florence Park this year and

Contestants will be vying 

for a Green Mountain Daniel 

Boone pellet grill as grand prize 

donated by Cutting Edges Sales 

& Service. 

There will 300 pounds of 

pork loin and 200 pounds of 

ribs slow-cooked to perfection 

and available for the public tasting 

portion of the event. 

While there will be no fire department 

water fights this year 

due to road construction, all the 

other familiar and fun activities 

are back and better than ever. 

An arts & crafts sale will join 

the Cherokee Ridge Runners at 

Buchanan Park. 

“The Pioneer Arts & Crafts 

Sale is new this year and we’re 

hoping for about 30 vendors. 

It should be a great way to 

draw more traffic to that park 

throughout the weekend,” Powell 

said. 

Of course the parade anchors 

everything on Saturday at 11 

a.m. followed by the opening of 

the inflatables, noon barbecue 

and other activities in Florence 

Park. There will be a few new 

inflatables this year. 

The Human Foosball tournament 

is also back and this year, 

and there will be both adult and 

youth divisions available. 

Card games have been split 

up this year with Bridge and 

Cribbage on Friday at St. Joseph 

Catholic Church with 500 and 

Pinochle on Sunday. 

And don’t forget bingo in between 

on Saturday. Powell says 

there are a lot of great bingo 

prizes this year. 

Big concerts at Boji Bay Legacy 

Park will also be drawing big 

crowds to Milford as well both 

Friday and Saturday nights. 

Barbecue, parades, inflatables, 

outdoor concerts, bingo 

and so much more.

Commercial Chaos for a Cure Semi Poker Run set for Saturday, July 23 

At a Glance: 

One semi after another is going to be hitting 

the road in Sioux Center on Saturday, July 

23, all in an effort to raise money for a 

good cause. 

Commercial Chaos for the Cure is now in its 

third year and it will feature a day filled with 

a poker run for big rigs as well as a fun-filled 

evening featuring a free-will dinner, games, a 

bouncy house for the kids and some raffles. 

The event kicks off on Saturday morning at 10 

a.m. at the Sioux County Fairgrounds in Sioux 

Center. Registration is $45 and includes a free 

t-shirt and a goodie bag. All of the congregated 

semis head out together at 11 a.m. for a poker 

run around N’West Iowa. 

They’ll be making stops at the Oak Street Station, 

a new truck stop in Inwood, IA, and the 

people there will be putting on a meal for the 

drivers and the passengers. 

Then it’s on to the fairgrounds in Rock Rapids. 

“This year, we teamed up with the Lyon

County Relay for Life team and they are going to 

be putting on the stop in Rock Rapids,” said Paul 

Schelling, the president of Commercial Chaos 

for a Cure and a Sioux Center resident. “They 

are going to do some sort of cupcakes so that 

should be something fun and different.” 

From there, they’ll make stops in Sibley, Hull 

and then it’s back to Sioux Center where the 

whole community is invited to join in the fun. 

“We’ll have an opening speech, open up 

the circus style games and the bean bag tosses 

and Nerf guns, and we’ll open up the bouncy 

house,” Schelling said. “Then we’ll have the 

meal. It’s really just a time for people to come 

and have a good time.” 

There is no charge for admittance to the community 

get-together, but the meal is a free-will 

offering. 

There will also be some raffles going on and 

one of the biggest raffles they have this year is for 

a golf cart. 

All of the money raised goes to benefit the 

June E. Nylen Cancer Center and a portion of 

the fundraiser will also go to the Lyon County 

Relay for Life. 

The June E. Nylen Cancer Center is a place 

near and dear to the heart of one organizer. 

That is where Schelling received his treatments 

when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s 

lymphoma. 

“I’m a trucker and I own a trucking company 

now, and I was thinking while I was laying there 

getting treatment and this idea popped into my 

head for this event,” Schelling said. “I called 

Dolan DeRoon. He’s a real optimist, like myself, 

and I asked if he thought this could work. We 

gathered some more friends and put together 

the first event.” 

Last year, they doubled the size of the event 

from the first year and had 56 trucks and about 

150 people at the evening event. 

They hope to continue to grow it even more. 

“We really want people to know that anyone 

and everyone is invited to come to the free-will 

meal and fun during the evening. We really 

want to see more of the community come out,” 

Schelling said. 

The evening activities are scheduled to begin 

around 5:30 p.m. F

Doreen’s Jazz will perform 

in Orange City July 20

know Doreen Ketchens as the 

female Louis Armstrong. 

Her band, Doreen’s Jazz, has performed 

on five continents and has 

recorded music with talented performers 

like Ellis Marsalis, Bob Wilber 

and Al Hirt, to name a few. The group 

has also had the honor of opening 

for prestigious acts such as Macy Grey 

and Dr. John and playing for four 

United States presidents as well. 

At 7 p.m.,Wednesday, July 20, Doreen’s 

Jazz will perform at Windmill 

Park in Orange City as a part of the 

summer series, Onstage Orange City. 

The band is from New Orleans, LA, 

and is comprised of Doreen’s husband, 

Lawrence Ketchens, and daughter, 

Dorians Ketchens-Dixon. 

Lawrence plays the tuba, valve 

trombone and piano for the family 

ensemble. 

Oftentimes he showcases his ability 

to play sousaphone and drums at 

the same time. He also arranges and 

produces music. 

Their daughter, Dorian, is very 

talented on the drums. At age four 

she officially began her music career 

by performing at the Sioux Falls, SD, 

Jazz Festival. Now she is a member of 

Doreen’s Jazz playing alongside her 

parents in multiple countries all over 

the world. 

Doreen and Lawrence aren’t just talented 

artists, but talented educators. 

When they are on tour they regularly 

play in schools all around the 

world. They work with students of all 

languages and teach them about New 

Orleans’ culture and music before and 

after Hurricane Katrina. 

Audience members can also expect 

an educational experience. The 

group’s goal is to not only play the 

music of New Orleans, but to teach 

their audience about a jazz funeral, 

second line, “Iko Iko” and lagniappe. 

Jennifer Sabo, a member of the 

Orange City Arts Council, said that 

Doreen’s Jazz was a huge hit when the 

band last visited in 2005. 

“Doreen and her band are very 

energetic and incredibly talented,”

have always loved Arnolds Park Amusement 

Park. 

As a kid my parents would take me there once 

a year, and – to me – it was one of my favorite 

parts of summer vacation. No ride would go unnoticed, 

no opportunity for a thrill left behind. 

Despite all the fond memories, I hadn’t visited 

the park for the past three summers so I decided 

to spend an afternoon with friends and family 

checking out the rides. 

The ride I’ve always looked forward to the 

most is The Legend Roller Coaster. 

When I arrived at the park I instantly made 

riding the roller coaster my top priority. My 

cousins, aunt and uncle joined my roommate 

Lexy and I for the first ride. As we filed into our 

seats, the nostalgia kicked in. 

Like many children who have visited Arnolds 

Park Amusement Park over the last several decades, 

this ride holds many special memories 

for me. It was the first roller coaster I ever road 

on. I’ve had countless friends and family sit next 

to me in the coaster’s black leather seats. The 

sound of the clanking tracks hauling the passengers 

to the top of the first peak is a familiar 

tune that I could never forget. It’s the kind of 

familiarity that I hope to feel years from now 

when I bring my own children to Arnolds Park 

someday. 

It’s safe and it’s happy and it has memories I 

will never forget. 

After sailing multiple loops around the roller 

coaster track, I decided to make my way through 

the center of the park. 

The Swinger and Scrambler did not disappoint 

us as we shuffled side to side and turned 

in loops high above the ground. 

The Log Flume was extremely refreshing. As 

the 90-degree heat sizzled down our backs, the 

fresh water soaked our clothes when the log 

plummeted to the bottom of the track. 

For the first time ever I road The Spider and it 

was phenomenal. 

Rides that whirl and twirl while traveling at 

fast speeds are my kind of rides. The Spider not 

only spins in a circular, up and down motion, 

but each individual cart also spins in circles to 

the left or right. Of any ride I’ve ever been on, I 

can honestly say I’ve never laughed harder. 

To cap off the afternoon we set our sights on 

the Ferris Wheel. As we gradually soared above 

the park into the blue sky I could see all of West 

Lake Okoboji. Boats coasting across white caps 

of endless waves, families walking from store to 

store. The view was simply breathtaking. 

Leaving the park was bittersweet. 

My Sunday afternoon was transitioning into 

evening and the park would soon close. Reflecting 

on the day I was sad our time at Arnolds Park 

Amusement Park had come to an end but I was 

also thankful I had the chance to visit after a few 

summers away. 

This week’s “Sight of Summer” not only reminded 

me of countless memories spent at Arnolds 

Park Amusement Park, but it also made me excited 

for more visits in the years to come. F

As a Sioux Falls, SD, native and current Iowa 

Hawkeye, all my life I have enjoyed spending time 

at Okoboji with family and friends. After playing 

four years of collegiate volleyball and studying

City as a place where scenes 

and story were created improvisationally, 

using techniques that 

grew out of the innovative techniques 

Spolin developed and 

taught. The Second City chose 

its self-mocking name from the 

title of an article about Chicago 

by A. J. Liebling that appeared 

in The New Yorker in 1952. 

Andrew Alexander and his 

recently deceased partner Len 

Stuart acquired The Second City 

in 1987. Andrew Alexander has 

helmed the Second City for 42 

years and has produced television 

programs in both the United 

States and Canada including “SC- 

TV,” “Second City Presents” and 

“Next Comedy Legend.” Since its 

debut, The Second City has been 

a launching pad for comedians, 

actors, directors and others working 

in show business.

you’ll want to head to the Pearson 

Lakes Art Center on Saturday, July 23. 

The Second City, a comedy improv 

troupe based out of Chicago, will be 

back in Okoboji for the 12th consecutive 

year. 

“We keep bringing them back to the 

area because it’s something different 

to see, and our patrons like it,” said 

Amanda Schindler, the performing 

arts director at the Pearson Lakes Art 

Center. “I notice around the area that 

it’s a lot of bands that perform, and 

not too many top notch comedy acts, 

so it’s nice to have something different 

to go see.” 

The Second City has a number of 

touring shows and the one that will be 

onstage at the Lauridsen Performing 

Arts Theatre at the Pearson Lakes Art 

Center will be Blue Co. and the show 

is “Fully Loaded.” 

On a snowy evening in Chicago in 

December of 1959 The Second City 

comedy club officially opened its 

doors. 

It’s not only a comedy club. The 

Second City has grown to be one of 

the nation’s top schools for theatre, 

comedy and improvisation. They have 

live shows every night in a number of 

locations including Chicago, Toronto 

and Hollywood. 

The Second City has turned out 

some of the funniest people we know 

today. Some of it’s alumni include: 

Dan Aykroyd, James Belushi, John 

Belushi, John Candy, Steve Carell, 

Stephen Colbert, Rachel Dratch, Chris 

Farley, Tina Fey, Jane Lynch, Bill Murray, 

Mike Myers, and many, many 

more. 

The comedians who will be onstage 

in Okoboji at 8 p.m., Saturday night, 

July 23, will be Adam Archer, Alison 

Gates, Greg Ott, Dewayne Perkins, 

Emma Pope and Maria Randazzo. 

This might be your chance to see the 

next famous comedian before they hit 

Hollywood or even end up on Saturday 

Night Live.

City. 

“I enjoy improv from time to time, 

and I’ve not ever seen this group 

perform. I hear great things about 

them and am excited to see them,”

All in the family 

“You Can’t Take It With You” on stage at OST 

Family. They somehow have the 

ability to serve a dual purpose in 

our lives. 

We love them. But sometimes, they 

drive us absolutely bonkers. 

That’s exactly the dynamic that is 

being explored in this week’s show at 

Okoboji Summer Theatre. “You Can’t 

Take It With You” by George Kaufman 

and Moss Hart debuted on Tuesday, 

July 12 and will run through Sunday, 

July 17. 

It’s a comedy that first premiered on 

Broadway in 1936 and won the Pulitzer 

Prize for Drama in 1937. 

The play follows the admittedly 

colorful and more than a little offbeat 

Vanderhof-Sycamore-Carmichael 

clan. 

The large family is bursting at the 

seams with bright, vivid and unapologetically 

eccentric characters. 

The patriarch of the clan is Grandpa 

Vanderhof, played by OST veteran and 

fan favorite Rob Doyen. Grandpa is 

committed to doing what makes him 

happy and that includes taking care of 

his pet snakes, going to commencement 

speeches and laughing at those 

around him who take life a bit too 

seriously. 

In addition to Grandpa, we have his 

daughter Penelope, played by Emmi 

Lintner, who is an avid playwright 

who doesn’t ever seem to get around 

to finishing many of her plays. 

Her husband, Paul, played by Jon 

Martin, makes fireworks down the 

basement alongside Mr. De Pinna, 

who came to deliver milk eight years 

ago and never left. 

Throw in a candy maker who is 

constantly practicing her ballet by 

pirouetting around the living room, 

a Russian expat ballet instructor and 

a few more oddballs and the show is 

ripe for laughs. 

Just watching these kooky characters 

would be enough to keep an audience 

entertained, but what’s a play 

without some extra drama? To top 

that, what’s a family without some 

extra drama? 

Madison Welch plays Alice, one of 

the more ‘normal’ members of the 

family. Alice has fallen in love with 

Tony, played by Dalton Mobley. And 

they want to get married. 

Alice has the classic problem. She 

loves her family, but she’s not so sure 

her husband and her future in-laws 

will. 

Bringing the two families together 

sets the scene and lights the match to 

explode some fireworks, literally and 

figuratively. 

The show is intelligent and so is 

the humor. Lines come fast and from 

many different voices as the show features 

most of the characters onstage 

all together. 

I commend the actors for convincingly 

creating the atmosphere of controlled 

chaos on stage. 

I won’t spoil the plot, but I will say 

that I was touched by this weird but 

likable family. In fact, I won’t name 

names, but it sort of reminded me of a 

few select members of my own family.

Putting things in perspective 

Artists showcase wonderful work in their first shows at PLAC 

Two new exhibits. Two artists with local ties. 

Lauren Chapman attended high school in 

Spirit Lake and is currently a student at the 

University of South Carolina. Danielle Clouse 

Gast is originally from Ruthven and works out 

of her home studio in Spirit Lake. Both have 

exhibits running from June 30-August 13 at the 

Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji. 

Lauren Chapman’s show is titled “Repetitions” 

and expounds upon a lesson learned 

from an early art instructor, Hank Hall, during 

high school and was later reenforced during her 

studies towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 

painting with an art history minor at the University 

of South Carolina. 

Repetitions are evident in Chapman’s paintings 

whether in colors, patterns or details. Her 

portraits and landscapes are awash in vivid colors 

and dazzling repeated details. 

“She’s taken a lesson from Hall to a different 

level,” visual arts director Britney Hansen said. 

“She has developed a style distinctly her own 

and her paintings are on a grand scale that is 

impressive for a young artist.” 

For Chapman the exhibit is a dream come true 

and a validation that she chose the right path for 

her career. 

“Back in high school I was inspired to pursue 

art and made to feel I was pretty good at it,” 

Chapman said. “I was then kind of told that art 

was just a hobby so I tried different majors before 

settling back into painting. I knew this was 

what I wanted to do.” 

She was recently back in the Iowa Great Lakes 

for the artist reception for her show, which had 

quite the turnout. 

“It was great to see so many people I know out in 

support and for my first-ever artist talk , and it went 

really well. I was really happy with it,” Chapman 

said. “Britney and Hank have been great supporters 

through the years and this was the perfect spot 

to have my first show. These are the people I grew 

up with and shaped who I am today, so it meant a 

lot that they were here to share one of the happiest 

experiences of my life so far.” 

Britney Hansen and Chapman have know 

each other quite awhile having played soccer 

together at Spirit Lake High School and it was 

Hansen who called Chapman while she was 

studying abroad in Italy to inquire about putting 

together a gallery show. 

Chapman jumped at the chance and painted 

for hundreds of hours to finish the 25 pieces in 

the show. 

She had painted a lot of landscapes while 

in Italy and while working on “Repetitions” 

wanted to incorporate those with aspects of 

home including lake sunsets and cornfields and 

the major flooding that occurred in her adopted 

state of South Carolina. 

“I worked so hard in one year taking on my 

own style after pulling inspiration from so many 

others. It’s been a really magical time in my 

work and I’ve learned so much about myself and 

where I want to go from here,” Chapman said. 

The next step is graduate school as Chapman 

looks to further her education in the arts. And 

for sure more and more art along the way as

Chapman continues to grow and develop her 

work. 

For now check out her very first gallery show 

in the Weaver Lobby Gallery and McIlrath Landing 

Gallery. It’s a debut not to be missed. 

Follow another set of stairs to the lower 

level of the Pearson Lakes Art Center and another 

first-timer has a show in the John & Karen 

Goodenow Gallery. 

Danielle Clouse Gast’s work is familiar to 

many in the Iowa Great Lakes area and she is no 

stranger to the art center having worked as its 

visual arts director for a time. Some of her work 

has hung in the facility before, but believe it or 

not, this her first show there as a solo artist. 

“To have this show at Pearson is a big deal for 

me and designing an exhibit for a place I care so 

much about has been so important to me at this 

point in my career,” Clouse Gast said. 

The first thing that strikes the viewer at the 

exhibit is the scale. Many of the paintings are 

several feet tall or wide or both. 

The next thing many will notice is the color 

palette. A lot of greens with some blues and an 

occasional other shade here or there. 

“For any painter it’s fun to go so big and with 

landscapes and especially these aerials it works 

best and is ultimately most successful on a large 

scale,” Clouse Gast said. “And the color palette 

has been a fun challenge introducing other colors 

including blues.” 

Clouse Gast’s landscapes are rendered in a 

more abstract, almost cubist, style that Clouse 

Gast said she’s always been drawn to in her artwork. 

It’s a technique that lends itself well to landscapes 

and really emphasizes the patterns inherent 

in Iowa Great Lakes area. 

In the past her landscapes have been mostly 

inspired by views seen from ground level. For 

this show, “From the Ground Up,” the viewpoint 

has shifted to the air. The title is both a 

play on words in regards to seeing things from 

the seat of an airplane as well as the challenge of 

trying something different. 

With a husband who is a pilot, Clouse Gast’s 

new work is a chance to see familiar scenes from 

a new perspective. 

“From that viewpoint there seemed to be 

paintings everywhere,” Clouse Gast said. “Some 

are more obvious than others and some are 

places we would often just drive past without 

thinking otherwise.” 

Working from photos she started painting 

last October and continued through May. While 

blizzards blanketed the landscapes outside, 

Clouse Gast jumped into the task of painting 

those aerial persectives full of summer colors. 

Several months of work have certainly paid 

off as “From the Ground Up” invites viewers to 

see their surroundings in the Iowa Great Lakes 

in a new way. 

“I hope it brings people a refreshed and innovative 

perspective on the area. I wanted it to be 

different from anything I’ve done but relatable 

to those familiar with my work,” Clouse Gast

2016 Polaris General 1000 

Going for a spin with Glen’s Sport Center 

Glen’s Sports Center of Sheldon, 

IA, is home to the brand new 

2016 Polaris General 1000. It is 

anticipated to be in high demand this 

year. A spin-off of the Polaris Ranger, 

this side-by-side has a sporty, rugged 

look that packs a powerful 100 horsepower 

engine capable of speeds up to 

70 mph. 

Kelly Jongerius, manager of Glen’s 

Sports Center, says that the General is 

perfect for any on-road and off-road 

transportation. Whether you’re farming, 

riding the General recreationally 

or are running errands around your 

property, this vehicle can serve a large 

variety of general purposes. 

I took the 2016 Polaris General 

1000 for a ride across bumpy hills, 

creek bottoms and pasture and I 

definitely wasn’t disappointed. The 

General has the ability to increase to 

thrilling speeds at a rapid rate giving 

you an instant rush of adrenaline. 

Driving the General is simply safe 

and comfortable. With an automatic 

transmission, an adjustable steering 

wheel and gage, bucket seats, 

waterproof vinyl interior, doors and 

seatbelts, I felt well equipped to 

handle any terrain comfortably. If the 

seatbelts aren’t buckled, the Polaris 

General will only reach a maximum 

speed of 10 mph until the passengers

are driving the General over a
