COMMENCEMENT<br />

extensive career in healthcare administration<br />

but said his “best days” began when they<br />

formed a venture capital firm in 1996.<br />

“It was his passion to partner with great<br />

talent to create and launch innovative<br />

businesses,” McWhorter noted.<br />

The ceremony included a special<br />

recognition of the late Clayton McWhorter,<br />

who died earlier this year and who provided<br />

the naming gift for the school.<br />

Prayer Breakfast<br />

Words of inspiration and encouragement<br />

around the themes of friendship, scholarship<br />

and faith were the focus of the annual<br />

prayer breakfast. About 300 graduates and<br />

faculty members gathered for what has<br />

become an important tradition of spring<br />

commencement weekend.<br />

In his challenge, President<br />

Westmoreland told the graduates, “In every<br />

way imaginable, you have touched our lives<br />

and caused us to be better people because<br />

you were here.<br />

“This institution will endure long after<br />

all of us are gone. But, it will be stronger<br />

because you are here today and because of<br />

the memory that you were here.”<br />

Awards<br />

Journalism and mass communication major<br />

Lauren Elizabeth Sims of Trenton, Georgia,<br />

earned the John C. Pittman Spirit Award,<br />

which honors the 1944 alumnus who served<br />

on the university’s board of trustees for 62<br />

years. Sims was recognized for<br />

consistently exhibiting<br />

exceptional Christian<br />

character in community life.<br />

Classics major and University Fellows<br />

honor student Samuel T. Hahn of Siloam<br />

Springs, Arkansas, earned the President’s<br />

Cup, Samford’s valedictorian honor. (See<br />

page 16).<br />

Laura C. Bean, a Brock Scholar and<br />

University Fellow from Murfreesboro,<br />

Tennessee, received the Velma Wright Irons<br />

salutatorian award as the graduating senior<br />

with the second-highest cumulative grade<br />

point average across all academic units at<br />

Samford. ◗<br />
