Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference 2016 Fellow and Scholar Biographies Garth Greenwell—Katharine Bakeless Nason Fellow in Fiction Garth Greenwell’s first novel, What Belongs to You, was published earlier this year in the US and the UK and is being translated into nine languages. His short fiction has appeared in Paris Review, A Public Space, and VICE. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, he holds graduate degrees from Harvard University and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where he was an Arts Fellow. Naomi Jackson—Theodore Morrison Fellow in Fiction Naomi Jackson is the author of The Star Side of Bird Hill, which was nominated for an NAACP Image Award and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, longlisted for the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize and the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize, and named an Honor Book for Fiction by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. Jackson studied fiction at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. She traveled to South Africa on a Fulbright scholarship, where she received an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Cape Town. A graduate of Williams College, her work has appeared in literary journals and magazines in the United States and abroad. She is the recipient of residencies and fellowships from Hedgebrook, the University of Pennsylvania’s Kelly Writers House, and Camargo Foundation. Jackson was born and raised in Brooklyn by West Indian parents. She will be a Visiting Writer at Amherst College starting in fall 2016. T. Geronimo Johnson—Shane Stevens Fellow in the Novel T. Geronimo Johnson, a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop & former Stegner Fellow, has taught at UC Berkeley, Stanford, the Writers’ Workshop, the Prague Summer Program, Oregon State, San Quentin, and elsewhere. His first novel was a 2013 PEN/Faulkner Award finalist and a 2016 Wall Street Journal Book Club pick. His second novel was longlisted for the National Book Award, longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, shortlisted for the Saroyan International Prize, named a finalist for the Mark Twain American Voice in Literature Award, included on Time magazine’s list of the top ten books of 2015, and named the winner of the 2015 Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence. Johnson is a 2016 National Book Award judge. Rickey Laurentiis—Katharine Bakeless Nason Fellow in Poetry Rickey Laurentiis was raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. His honors include a Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation, as well as fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in Italy, and Washington University in St Louis. In 2016, he traveled to Palestine as a part of the Palestine Festival of Literature. His first book, Boy with Thorn, won the 2014 Cave Canem Poetry Prize, the 2015 Julie Suk Award, the 2016 Levis Reading Prize, and was a finalist for the 2016 Thom Gunn Award for Gay Poetry and a Lambda Literary Award. He lives in Brooklyn.
Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference 2016 Fellow and Scholar Biographies Matthew Minicucci—Stanley P. Young Fellow in Poetry Matthew Minicucci is the author of two collections of poetry: Translation (2015), winner of the 2014 Wick Poetry Prize, and Small Gods (forthcoming, 2017). His work has appeared in or is forthcoming in numerous journals and anthologies, including Best New Poets 2014, Blackbird, Gettysburg Review, Kenyon Review, and Southern Review, among others. He has also been featured on Poetry Daily and Verse Daily. He currently teaches writing at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. Matthew Neill Null—Shane Stevens Fellow in Fiction Matthew Neill Null is a writer from West Virginia, a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and a winner of the O. Henry Award, the Mary McCarthy Prize, and the Joseph Brodsky Rome Prize from the American Academy of Arts & Letters. He is author of the novel Honey from the Lion and the story collection Allegheny Front. He has received fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, the Michener-Copernicus Society of America, the St. Botolph Club Foundation, and the University of Iowa. Next year he will be in residence at the American Academy in Rome. Matthew Olzmann—Robert Frost Fellow in Poetry Matthew Olzmann’s first book of poems, Mezzanines, was selected for the Kundiman Prize. His second book, Contradictions in the Design, is forthcoming in November, 2016. His poems, stories, and essays have appeared in Kenyon Review, New England Review, Brevity, Necessary Fiction, Southern Review, and elsewhere. He was the 2015-2016 Kenan Visiting Writer at the University of North Carolina, and currently teaches in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. Angela Palm—Axinn Foundation Fellowship in Narrative Nonfiction** Angela Palm is the author of Riverine: A Memoir from Anywhere but Here (2016) and winner of the 2014 Graywolf Press Nonfiction Prize. She edited the anthology Please Do Not Remove. Her work has been published in Ecotone, Brevity, DIAGRAM, Midwestern Gothic, Essay Daily, Paper Darts, and elsewhere. Palm lives in Vermont, where she works as a developmental editor, and has taught creative writing at Champlain College, New England Young Writers' Conference, and The Writers' Barn. Michael Ruhlman—Jane Tinkham Broughton Fellowship in Fiction Michael Ruhlman is the author of more than twenty books of nonfiction, memoir, books about chefs, his own cookbooks and cookbooks written with other chefs. His first book of fiction, In Short Measures, is a collection of novellas, published last fall.
