Hammond helped lead the Tigers to a share of the CAA Regular Season Title
with a sweep of JMU on the final day of conference play. Under Hammond’s
guidance, the Tigers ranked among the national leaders in kills and assists
per set and total team kills and assists. Hammond worked with the Tigers’ pin
hitters (opposites and outsides) along with guiding the serving game and
some passing. He played a key role in the development of Jocelyn Kuilan, the
CAA Rookie of the Year. Hammond worked with Haley Pa’akaula, who set the
school record for kills in a single-match with 30 against Utah Valley.
He helped guide the Tigers to a 27-5 overall record and a 13-3 mark in CAA
play in 2014. That season he specialized in training the outside and opposite
hitters in attacking. He also coached team blocking and serving. Hammond
helped the Tigers lead the league in hitting percentage and service aces. Three
of the Tigers’ All-CAA players were pin hitters, outside hitter Saitaua Iosia,
opposite Victoria Williams and outside/middle Haley Pa’akaula.
Hammond, who spent eight years at the University of Maryland Eastern
Shore (UMES), moved to Towson in the spring of 2013 to continue his work
with former UMES and current Towson head coach Don Metil.
Hammond served as a volunteer assistant coach at UMES during the 2002
and 2006 seasons before being promoted to assistant and then associate head
coach when Metil was hired in 2007. He was also named the Hawks’ recruiting
coordinator in 2009. Hammond played a major role in the 2011 and 2012 teams
winning the MEAC Championship and earning the program’s first two berths in
the NCAA Tournament.
While at UMES, Hammond was involved in all areas of on the floor coaching,
match preparation, player development, recruiting and scouting. During his
time in Princess Anne, Md. he helped Metil and the Hawks post seven straight
seasons of 20 or more wins, four undefeated conference regular seasons and
six MEAC Northern Division regular season championships. UMES posted a
61-3 record in conference play during that run.
