Foundation day<br />

On the occasion of the 8th CBS Foundation Day, there was<br />

a lecture by Dr. J. P. Mittal, M. N. Saha Distinguished Fellow<br />

from BARC, Mumbai. The speaker is the former director of<br />

the Chemistry & Isotope group in Bhabha Atomic Research<br />

Centre and has published over 300 papers in high impact international<br />

journals, including Nature and Science. He is also<br />

the recipient of various awards in recognition of his research<br />

work, including the Senior Humboldt Research Award and<br />

the INSA gold medal. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the<br />

Government of India in 2003. The topic of the talk was the<br />

potential of New Chemistry, which is opening up more every<br />

year. He gave various examples such as using photons as a<br />

catalyst, fullerenes, high Tc semiconductors etc.<br />

Following the lecture was a Bharatanatyam recital<br />

by Ms. Sindhuja Bheesette. Ms. Bheesette<br />

has trained in the art form since the age of six<br />

under the tutelage of various gurus including<br />

Guru Ramaa Bharadvaj, Guru Padmini Radhakrishnan<br />

and Guru Savitha Sastry. She gave<br />

a mesmerising performance, thoroughly entertaining<br />

the audience and ending her splendid<br />

recital with the traditional thillana.<br />
