A game of two halves
After a promising first half and a half time 2-0 lead
Yateley collapsed, conceding 5 goals in a 30 minute
second period.
We had started really brightly, with Ben and Nathan
causing all sorts of problems for the visitors and after
taking an early 2-0 lead in the first 13 minutes.
Firstly, a well worked move down the right ended with
Nathan dispatching a clinical shot across the keeper
into the bottom corner.
The second goal came after Nathan intercepted a poor
back pass, to slot past the oncoming keeper, and we
were well in control.
We could have made it
three goals only for the
keeper to stop the ball just
as Ben was looking to get
round him but the keeper
done well.
Cubo had a spell of
pressure before half-time
but we kept our good
shape and, apart from a
few routine saves from
Sean, our goal was well
protected.
In the second half we
wanted to try and keep
the ball more and slow
the game down, but Cubo
immediately began piling
on the pressure.
We held out for 10
minutes until a defining
moment. Harry, who
was playing very well
with EVO, Travis and
Pete although being well
worked, pulled his groin
and had to come off.
Within seconds of that
substitution it was 2-1.

We then had another blow when Jack came off and we
had to reshuffle the midfield, but Cubo just overran us
scoring another four quick goals.
There were positives as
in the first half when we
looked well organised.
We pulled one back at the other end through a Nathan
penalty to reduce the arrears. Then we were denied
another stonewall penalty when Dan fed Nathan who
was brought down in the box. All we were awarded
was a free kick on the edge which came to nothing.
In a nutshell the first half was fine but the second
was just poor with a lack of fighting spirit from some,
which just made us too open.
Plenty of work to do
looking back at the second
half, starting with a few
fitness levels.

Highs and lows to start
Yateley United 3-5 AFC Cubo
League 13 August 2016
Yateley attacked from the kick off, heading towards
the lakes, winning a free kick on the left. Jack Howard
took the kick but the stiff crosswind took the effort
beyond the far post. Cubo’s No 10 won a corner on the
left, which was cleared at the near post for a second
corner, this time headed just wide.
Ben’s shot from the left was saved by the keeper, but
on 4 minutes Sam Munden passed to Howard who
chipped to Nathan Connelly, firing his shot rightfooted
across the keeper and in off the far post, 1-0.
Cubo came back with their
10 charging at the home
defence but Evo made a
great tackle. On 8 minutes
their 11 was clear on goal,
but scuffed his shot into
Shaun Thomas’s hands.
The 13th minute was
unlucky for Cubo, a loose
backpass was pounced on
by Connolly and he slotted
away his second for a 2-0
lead.

saved well under his feet.
Then Cubo shot wide.
On 28 minutes, it looked
like Ben was away on goal
and the advancing keeper
appeared to handle outside
the area, but not spotted
by the Ref.
Connolly took the game
Half-time 2-0 to Yateley United.
Cubo showed they meant business straight from the
restart. Travis held them up with a decent tackle but
their 9 hit the crossbar, then they shot wide before a
left foot shot was stopped by Thomas in goal.
On 50 minutes a foul on Ben gave Howard a chance to
extend Yateley’s lead, firing a free kick over the bar.
Cubo pulled a goal back on 52 minutes with the No 11
firing in from the left, 2-1.

A shot by Munden was
saved, but on the hour
mark a Cubo shot from
the left equalised 2-2.
Five minutes later and
Cubo were ahead 2-3.
It could have been 2-4
down if Thomas hadn’t
saved well from 9, who
screwed his follow-up wide. On 74 minutes, a Cubo
cross from the right beat Thomas and hit the angle

of far post and crossbar.
Cubo pressure pinned
Yateley into their own
half during this period
of visitor dominence,
No 11’s shot saved, 10
shot wide before, on 78
minutes, 11 shot into the
bottom left hand corner
for 2-4. Three minutes
later and the Cubo 3 shot from distance and scored in
off the lefthand post, to make the game safe 2-5 on 71
minutes. A further attack won a corner from the left,
Thomas fisting the ball clear.
Ben was clear in the box and pulled down for a
penalty. Connolly sent the keeper diving the wrong
way as he stroked the ball into the right side of the
net for 3-5 on 87 minutes. A free kick on the edge was
wasted. Into injury time Evo had a final shot saved.
AFC Cubo are a good side, who play the ball around
well and found much more room in the second half
as Yateley’s wingers, who were very effective in the
first half, were dragged into the centre to make up for
substitutions, leaving Yateley on the back foot.

Welcome to our visitors Laleham FC
Laleham FC was formed
in 2012, following a vision
set out in 2009/10 season
under guidance of the
late Martin Varney. He
re-invigorated the fortunes
of the Lammas 3rd team,
when he assembled a crop
of youngsters, and led
them to win the Division
3 title in the Guildford
and Woking Alliance.
After promotion to
Division 2, they finished
as runners up, losing the
intermediate cup final
but once again gained
promotion to Division 1.
The following season they
completed the League
and Cup double seeing
off Premier Division
Hambledon in the final.
Sadly, just a few weeks
before the end of the
season, Martin passed
away but the team was
determined to continue in
his memory.
In 2012/13, Laleham FC
was launched, managed
by Clive Robertson and
assistant coach, Simon
Hickman. Laleham
dominated the Premier Division but a late spate of
injuries saw them miss the title by a single point
on the final day of the season. Still, promotion was
assured and Laleham joined the Surrey County
Intermediate League for the next step up the pyramid
structure. An influx of players for the 2013/14 season
allowed Laleham to start a Reserve Team. Laleham’s
succeeded in the SCILW league, with promotion to
the Premier Division as Division 1 Champions, the 5th
promotion in a row. Laleham also reached the Premier
Cup Final that year but unfortunately were beaten 2-1
in extra time by Godalming & Farncombe Athletic.
At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, former Staines
Lammas and Chertsey Town player, Matt Brunt took
over as Manager and installed Simon Hickman and
Steve Grace (Club Captain) as his coaching staff. Matt
has brought a new professional attitude to the club
and it seems have paid off. The 1st team won both the
SCILW Premier Division and Challenge Cup.
Our 6th promotion in a row was denied due to a toilet
technicality and Laleham 1st Team had to remain
competing in the SCILW Premier Division for the
2015/16 season. Matt Brunt unfortunately had to leave
the club due to personal reasons and Club Captain
Steve Grace was installed as 1st Team Manager.
Laleham FC’s 2015/16 season was their most
successful to date. Laleham won the SCILW Premier
League title, the SCILW Premier Challenge Cup and
the Middlesex FA Intermediate Saturday County Cup.
We also completed the required work on the toilet
facilities, thanks to the players themselves, and were
promoted to the Surrey Elite League for the season
2016/17.
