The National Centre for
Learning Welsh is a new body
responsible for co-ordinating
all aspects of the Welsh for
Adults programme throughout
Wales. At a regional level, Learn
Welsh – Swansea Bay Region,
will aim to deliver high quality
Welsh language courses in
the Swansea and Neath Port
Talbot local authority areas,
and ensure that your growing relationship
with the Welsh language is rewarding and fun.
Talbot Building Lobby
Learn Welsh – Swansea Bay Region is located in the Talbot
Building on Swansea University’s Singleton Campus. We have
other locations across the region, including centres at Tŷ Tawe
in Swansea City centre and Tŷ’r Gwrhyd in Pontardawe. Please
call in at any of these locations for further information, to meet
some of our tutors, or to learn more about the support structures
that are available to you.
Why Learn Welsh?
Over the years, our learners have told us of many reasons why they
chose to learn Welsh, these include:
gaining a new skill in order to further career prospects;
being able to support their children’s bilingual development;
being able to reflect their pride in their Welsh heritage;
gaining access to the rich Welsh-language culture, history
and literature;
making new friends and enjoying themselves.
On a social level, speaking and understanding Welsh provides a
gateway for you to experience more aspects of Welsh life and culture.
Indeed, there is a notion that you gain a new personality with every
new language that you learn, or that you gain another window or
outlook on life. In addition, the ability to communicate in more than
one language offers other - perhaps less obvious - social, psychological
and lifestyle benefits. For example, you can easily:
widen your social circle;
gain further self-confidence;
impress people and gain admiration from others;
boost your creativity, and
enhance your cognitive skills and other health benefits.
It is estimated
that between 60-75%
of the world’s population
speak at least two languages.
So it is the ‘monoglots’ who are in the minority.
Welsh Government
Aiming for
1,000,000 Welsh
Speakers!
The Welsh language has official
status in Wales, and all public sector
organisations and a growing number of
private companies provide services in
both Welsh and English. This means that
a large number of employers in Wales
are searching for bilingual employees;
so, the ability to speak Welsh gives
those looking for work a
huge advantage.
Choose a course that suits your needs
Entry Level courses, concentrate on teaching everyday conversational Welsh
and use the same coursebooks, CDs and online materials. However, they
differ in intensity and the way in which they are delivered.
Most language experts agree, the more intensively a language is learned, the
quicker you progress to fluency. With this in mind we offer a full range of
faster paced classes over 3 ten-week terms.
Intensive Courses
Mynediad PLUS
A super-intensive course combining Mynediad (Entry Level) and
Sylfaen (Foundation Level). This group meets for 4 hours, 3 times
a week. It takes 1 year to complete this course with 120 units
covered.
Mynediad Combi
A combination of 3 hours of online study at home in preparation
for a weekly 3-hour class. It takes 1 year to complete this course,
60 units covered.
Mynediad Dwys
Intensive Entry Level: 2-hour classes twice a week. It takes 1 year
to complete this course, 60 units covered.
Welsh in a Week
4 one-week courses (3 during half term weeks and one week
during Easter). It takes 1 year to complete this course, 60 units
covered.
6 learnwelsh.cymru (01792) 60 20 70 learnwelsh@swansea.ac.uk

We also offer a range of slower-paced, less intensive classes over
3 ten-week terms.
Non-intensive courses
Mynediad 1 – Entry Level 1:
One, 2-hour class a week. It takes two years to complete this
course, 60 units covered (30 units per year).
Mynediad Ar-lein – Entry Level Online:
All resources are available online and you can study at your own
pace (however 1 unit a week is recommended). It takes 2 years to
complete this course, 60 units covered (30 per year).
Welsh for the Family: Specifically designed for parents and
carers of young children. One, 2-hour class a week. It takes two
years to complete this course, 60 units covered (30 per year).
*The WJEC’s Welsh for the Family book is used for this course.
