SWM circa 2016 is a rare mix – 1970s branding and colourways, 2012 technology and 2004 pricing. It’s enough to keep a time traveller very busy. But is it enough to keep a 2016 trail/enduro enthusiast satisfied?

8: Fit sidestand retainer: £0<br />

I should have done this before our first<br />

test ride. It has to be said the sidestand<br />

design on the WR does not match<br />

KTM’s, it just doesn’t fold away neatly<br />

enough and the spring arrangement is<br />

overly complex. On the first test ride I<br />

must have hit it on a tree for the spring<br />

and clip went missing and I had to<br />

remove the whole stand. Now with a<br />

replacement spring and clip from<br />

Yamaha I wanted to be doubly sure the<br />

stand wouldn’t fall apart again at the<br />

W2D. There’s no rubber retaining strap<br />

on the WR, like an EXC has, so I<br />

improvised one. Simply two zip ties<br />

looped around the subframe (the second<br />

loop is for added strength and back-up)<br />

fed into a loop of rubber made from a<br />

cut-off from an old inner tube – voila!<br />

Okay, it’s not factory smart and sits a bit<br />

incongruous next to some of the highbuck<br />

items on this bike, but it means the<br />

stand stays put until I release it.<br />

These are a must-have for a serious<br />

enduro rider, hopefully saving the<br />

expensive rads in a heavy smash. They<br />

really needed to be fitted. They didn’t go
