Community Safety:<br />
LIVING FREE<br />
OF FEAR<br />
In 2012, Access Dorset surveyed our members about their<br />
experience of ‘Fear and Bullying in Dorset’ and 40% of the<br />
101 respondents reported that they had been frightened or<br />
hurt by another person because of their disability or age.<br />
Unfortunately this was not a rare phenomenon. Disability<br />
hate crime, although drastically under reported, happens far<br />
too often.<br />
The results of the survey were reported by<br />
the local media and reinforced the need for<br />
a project led by disabled and older people to<br />
raise awareness and provide on-going support<br />
around these issues of Community Safety. With<br />
the support of Lloyds Bank Foundation, we<br />
established a project in 2014 to recruit, train<br />
and support volunteers to act as Community<br />
Safety Champions to provide direct support<br />
to other disabled/older people as well as<br />
providing information and advice that promotes<br />
Community Safety both at home and whilst out<br />
and about.<br />
This project culminated in an interactive<br />
workshop in early summer 2016 entitled “I<br />
