CLASS IN SESSION: BACK TO SCHOOL 2016
W
hether you’re a local elementary
or high school student, or perhaps
among the thousands of undergraduates
attending Western University and
Fanshawe College, returning to school is one
time of the year that can be genuinely lifechanging.
Beginning a semester of studies and reconnecting
with friends always feels like a fresh
start. Add in new clothes, stationary and/or
tech, and excitement for September begins
to build.
According to current style arbiters, retro
chic fashions from the ‘70s to the ‘90s have
been revived for Back to School 2016.
This fall, popular ‘70s staples mock turtlenecks
and flare jeans are making a comeback.
Meanwhile, skinny jeans are being traded
for wide-leg, high-waisted pants, but don’t
worry: there’s plenty of denim and suede to
go around!
Athleisure is getting a ‘80s twist with parachute
pants, and you’ll see the ‘90s grunge
look creep back into style with more graphic
tees and soft plaid flannels.
School supplies are already on store shelves
and consumers have more product choices
than ever this year. Top of the list in 2016
are eco-friendly supplies like 100 percent recycled
paper, and notebooks with animal and
plant-inspired designs.
Lunch boxes, plastic food containers and
sports bottle are also available in eco-friendly
formats.
Teachers and parents are preparing for
Back-to-School as well, and there are various
products to help get them sorted, including
file crates, planners, calendars and desktop
organizers. Look for items using rustic wire,
faux leather and charcoal finishers.
If you are one of the thousands of university
and college students arriving in London
for the 2016-2017 school year, you’ll likely
spend the first few weeks acclimating to your
new surroundings.
Whether or not you’re from out of town,
school events – no matter how well attended
– aren’t going to tell you very much about
the city where you’ll be residing for the next
year. For that info, you’ll need to do some
recon.
Home to nearly half-a-million people, London
is a city that offers residents and visitors
a wide selection of cultural, dining and entertainment
destinations.
Many of these spots are located in and
around the downtown core, on a stretch of
road known as Richmond Row. Richmond
Row is the central hub of student activity in
London and the heart of the city’s nightlife.
The neighborhoods surrounding downtown
have a lot to offer students as well.
For example, Wortley Village – located just
a few minutes southwest of the core – is a
picturesque setting that features numerous
specialty dining and shopping opportunities.
Old East Village, or ‘SoHo’, located east of
Adelaide Street along Dundas, is also worth a
visit. Home to numerous established London
eateries, shops and entertainment venues,
the area is known for its vital contributions to
the city’s arts and cultural life, as well as its
blue-collar, working-class roots.
If you’re a jogger, biker, walker, skater or
roller-blader who’s new to the city, Springbank
Park will be the place for you. Located
along the Thames River, the park boasts
140-hectares of natural woodlands and wellmaintained
garden settings that can be traversed
using a network of paved pathways.
There isn’t enough space to provide comprehensive
information on London’s fine restaurants,
galleries, dance clubs, theatres and
taverns in the city in this article.
However, every issue of SCENE – published
monthly – contains listings of venues, events
and happenings throughout London.

your fingertips.
Whether you are an elementary, secondary
or post-secondary student, teacher, support
