Mobility City
Brief outline
The project task was to design or improve an
existing mode of public transport aiding to
improve the experience of disabled people
moving around the city. The improvement
implemented should also make the travelling
experience better for all.
The research area of my group
Brian Loranger’s Ethnographic design lectures/workshops gave us an insight into how broad and
incredibly important the research phase for a good, user orientated (as all should be), design is.
Also, the lectures taught us practical skills of how to properly do desk and field research, which was
really helpful for this project, and I’m sure - will be for the future
Approach
We were split into 4 teams for initial
group research of 4 areas.
We had to gather all the useful
information and insights into a
presentation to share with the rest of our
classmates.
Disabled people do have rights regarding
transportation, help is available, but not with ease.
You always need to call in advance in order to receive
proper handling i.e. 48h before your flight.
Everyone is willing to help, just facilities aren’t always
available.
lnsight
Every person in a wheelchair was accompanied by
somebody else.
Going through the barriers always slow people down,
especially with luggage, prams, bicycles.
Staff is friendly and always willing to help.
lnsight
Doors for disabled toilets are ridiculously heavy and difficult to
operate.
Too smooth of a surface - not enough friction to properly move
around, if there’s a slope it gets impossible.
Surface too uneven - you get motion sickness.
Guide dogs are allowed everywhere except on
escalators.
Station gets crowded and empty in a wave pattern.
Difficult to hear announcements
I didn’t experience much travelling difficulty while having my
foot broken moving around with crutches. Everyone around was
extremely considerate, which made it easier.
