FOCUS ON BRITAIN & IRELAND Mothers’ Union was founded 140 years ago this year in Britain and it remains a driving-force in the movement today in day to day work in communities, in political action and in funding programmes across the world. Active in faith, creative and relevant in practical support, vocal in campaigning and tireless in fundraising, around 70,000 members across Britain & Ireland are a great enabling force for the charitable work of the global organisation. 60,000 BENEFICIARIES BRITAIN & IRELAND 10 + RAISED MARRIAGE PREPARATION SESSIONs TO SUPPORT MOTHERS UNION ACROSS THE WORLD
GETTING AWAY FROM IT ALL (AFIA) For fifty years Mothers’ Union dioceses across Britain & Ireland have been helping people experiencing stress in their family life to have a break together. In Canterbury, Mothers’ Union provided a week away for several families in the beautiful East Sussex countryside. Fourteen families with 40 children came together with experienced Mothers’ Union volunteers for a lovely week with fun activities for the children and adults alike. Amit and Chloe came on the holiday with their four children (aged 10 or younger) and Chloe’s grandmother, Debbie. The family had not had a holiday for five years and Chloe has been suffering ill-health which really has restricted her balance and mobility. Amit has given up his job as a dental technician to become Chloe’s carer. Typical of many who go through major health problems, Chloe suffers from anxiety and depression and their son Joe had developed ADHD and ODD after a period of bad damage to their house from mould. So this holiday meant a great deal to the family. After an initial panic before the holiday – when they worried about how they would manage and what they would need, they really enjoyed it. Debbie coming was a great help as she looked after the children. “The children really enjoyed the freedom.” Debbie told us, “they do not have a large garden so this was great – especially the swimming pool. It was also good for them to have contact with other children. Amit has been able to have some time to himself and relax more, and to learn not to worry all the time.” “The holiday has been fantastic, and the volunteer team great.” Amit In 2015 Mothers’ Union provided 3,380 people with a much needed break, either in a week with other families, in a caravan, or on days out.
