Odds and Ends Art Book Fair
Over the past ten years, independent publishing
by artists has flourished; art book
fairs around the world attract tens of thousands
of printed-matter enthusiasts. With
works as diverse as photocopied zines,
complex book arts, letterpress posters and
cards, screenprinted chapbooks, and offset,
digitally printed, and on-demand artists’
books, the field is rich in formal and conceptual
experimentation. The Odds and
Ends Art Book Fair at the Yale University
Art Gallery is a one-day event that celebrates
this thriving movement.
The first Odds and Ends fair was held
in 2014 in conjunction with the Gallery’s
exhibition Odd Volumes: Book Art from the
Allan Chasanoff Collection (2014–15). Curated
by a team of Yale University students, the
exhibition drew from the collection of
Chasanoff, b.a. 1961, and featured experimental
and innovative works of book art
from the 1960s to the present. The fair was
conceived by Christopher Sleboda, Director
of Graphic Design, in collaboration with
Yale University School of Art students,
as a way to acknowledge the continued
relevance of artists’ books and engage
with students—particularly in the graphic
design, photography, and printmaking
programs at Yale. In its first year the fair
hosted 50 exhibitors, including artists and
artist-run publishing companies from
across New England, local community
members, Yale students, and faculty and
students from the Rhode Island School of
Design, Providence.
In 2015, the fair grew to more than 60
exhibitors, which included Yale classes,
groups, and alumni, as well as international
participants. Undergraduate
students in a design class taught by
Pamela Hovland, Senior Critic in Graphic
Design at the School of Art, created zines
specifically for the fair; they designed,
printed, and sold their own work. Hovland
later noted that the students “felt empowered
by making something, then making
it public.”
The Odds and Ends fair offers a unique
opportunity for artists and students
to actively engage with each other and
with the public. This year’s fair is on
Friday, December 9. All are welcome to
enjoy the wide variety of printed objects
on sale that day.
