He is also highly regarded amongst his peers for happily
discussing the management of complicated patients
with referring doctors and for providing support to the
James Cook University teaching program for medicine.
His caring nature also extends beyond his profession.
As a child growing up, he travelled to remote
communities across the Cape with his father, who was
a relieving postmaster in the region. These travels as
a youngster made him aware of challenges people in
remote areas face, which is why he has been actively
involved on the organising committee and as a
participant in the Cairns to Karumba Bike Ride. He also
sponsors the event and maps the cross-country route
and schedules.
“It’s been a privilege to be able to help ensure regional
children have access to the same opportunities as
those in larger towns and cities,” said Dr Shepherd,
whose commitment extends to patients in remote
communities where he is happy to co-ordinate a
patient’s care around travel considerations.
“The money raised from this charity event provides
opportunities for children in remote areas across the
Cape.”
Outside of work Dr Shepherd is devoted to his wife
Cathy and his dog. He loves the region and enjoys
camping, boating and exploring the beauty that Far
North Queensland and the Cape offer.
