395. A late 19th century binocular microscope by<br />

Swift and Sons<br />

with rack and pinion focusing, plano-concave mirror,<br />

circular stage with X and Y focusing, a selection of<br />

eyepieces and canned objectives, contained within<br />

a mahogany case with brass carrying handle. The<br />

microscope has minimal wear to the brass although there<br />

is some signs of use. The rack and pinion focusing well<br />

illustrated with watercolour sketches on hand made paper,<br />

396. Cutty Sark Interest. An Apprentice’s Indenture<br />

and associated documents<br />

relating to Charles Malcolm MacDonald, comprising an<br />

Ordinary Apprentice’s Indenture dated 1888, a letter<br />

dated 1892 stating that MacDonald served on the Cutty<br />

Sark, a Certificate of Competency as Second Mate, and<br />

his discharge papers, together with a photograph of<br />

MacDonald, and a number of photographs of the ship and<br />

a book ‘The Return of the Cutty Sark’ by C. Fox Smith<br />

Air Commodore Sir Frank Whittle OM, KBE, CB (engine<br />

designer), Michael Daunt (assistant test pilot), Sir Stafford<br />

Cripps (Labour MP and Minister for Aircraft Production)<br />

and George Carter (aircraft designer). Inscribed ‘First<br />

Flight at Cranwell - 15th May 1941’ and ‘Prototype<br />

jet-propelled aircraft C.A.C. Airframe. Whittle Engine’.<br />

Together with a collection of assorted related aviation<br />

ephemera including a photograph of the pilot Gerry Sayer,<br />

Gloster Meteor Pilots Notes, aircraft tech logs, a Gloster<br />

Meteor trophy, maps and other items<br />
