HEALTH CARE IN VIRGINIA
ABOUT MEDICAID
Overview
Medicaid is a joint federal and state program
authorized under Title XIX of the Social Security Act
that provides health care and long-term services and
supports for about 1.3 million Virginians.
The Department of Medical Assistance Services
(DMAS) provides an invaluable source of health care
coverage and access for 638,828 children in lowincome
families; 331,632 parents, caregivers, and
pregnant women; and 306,754 elderly individuals and
persons with disabilities in Virginia.
The average Virginia House or Virginia Senate district
has 16% of its district enrolled in Medicaid.
Virginia’s Medicaid program covers inpatient
and outpatient medical services, nursing facility
services, and behavioral health services. Virginia
Medicaid enrollees may also receive coverage
through home and community-based waivers that
provide community-based long-term care services to
Virginians as an alternative to institutionalization.
